Jiang Zhonglin played quietly, hardly speaking, while his opponent seemed to be a chatterbox, lamenting about his previous moves and how things could have been different.
As Yu Yao watched Jiang Zhonglin, who was focused and deliberate in his moves, she reflected on their year of marriage. She had never known whether he had been good at chess before or had learned later. A year or two is too short to fully understand someone.
While Yu Yao was lost in thought, the game ended quickly.
Some onlookers remarked, “Why is Teacher Jiang playing so fast today?”
The losing old man, with a cheerful expression, pretended to be upset, “Yeah, Old Jiang usually lets me win a few times. We could spend an hour on a game, but today he didn’t give me any face.”
The old lady beside Yu Yao chuckled, “Teacher Jiang must be afraid of making you wait impatiently.”
Unbothered by the teasing, Yu Yao said, “Honestly, I don’t understand the game. Next time, if you want to play chess with Old Jiang, just go to our home and call him. I won’t interrupt, and you can play as long as you like.”
“Alright, alright! Old Jiang, did you hear that? Comrade Yu said we should come to your place next time!”
Jiang Zhonglin, looking at the uninvolved Yu Yao with a resigned expression, said to the old man, “When have I ever chased you out of my home?”
After a few more jokes, they reset the game, and Yu Yao and Jiang Zhonglin headed home.
“Come on, let’s play chess too,” Yu Yao said as soon as they got home.
Since she said so, Jiang Zhonglin didn’t want to disappoint her enthusiasm and set up the chessboard. With Yu Yao’s limited skill, she wouldn’t last more than three minutes against the masterful Jiang Zhonglin. To avoid an embarrassing defeat for his wife, Jiang Zhonglin painstakingly allowed her to play, stretching an otherwise hopeless game to ten minutes with his superior skills.
However, despite his generous play, Yu Yao was still quickly routed. Unfazed, she looked at her lone red general and suddenly pushed one of Jiang Zhonglin’s black soldiers forward, capturing his king.
Jiang Zhonglin: “……”
Yu Yao seriously explained, “Even though this soldier is black, he’s actually an undercover agent for our red side, so he took out your king!”
Jiang Zhonglin had never seen such audacity and was stunned by his wife’s shamelessness.
“That’s cheating,” Jiang Zhonglin said bluntly.
Yu Yao replied, “Is it cheating if it’s between husband and wife? No.” She threw down the chess pieces. “Since you’ve made such an effort to let me win, why not just let me win openly? Everyone will be happy that way.”
Jiang Zhonglin: This is not at all fair play.
Jiang Zhonglin: “Do you want to continue?”
Yu Yao, unashamedly, said, “No, it’s boring. Besides, you’ll never win against me anyway.”
In terms of shamelessness, Jiang Zhonglin indeed lost.
A few days later, when Jiang Zhonglin’s chess friends came over to play, they were astonished after losing three games in a row, saying no one here could beat Jiang Zhonglin.
Jiang Zhonglin jokingly said, “Last time I played chess with Yu Yao, she won.”
His friends were amazed. “Really? I didn’t know Yu Yao was also a chess expert!” They all insisted on playing a game with her.
Yu Yao, who was playing a game on a small experience device, chuckled and said, “Actually, I don’t know anything about chess, but since I’m Jiang Zhonglin’s wife, he wouldn’t dare win against me.”
