Jiang Zhonglin immediately got up, his young and handsome face flushed, with a damp scent in his hair. “What’s wrong? Are you uncomfortable?” he asked anxiously.
Yu Yao wasn’t normally the kind of person to impose on others, but seeing Jiang Zhonglin like this, she unconsciously said what she was thinking.
“I want to eat strawberries,” she said.
“Strawberries?” Jiang Zhonglin immediately got out of bed. “I’ll go buy some for you.”
Just after having a pleasant experience with his wife, the young man was full of energy and eager to fulfill her every wish, forgetting that strawberries weren’t in season and feeling quite foolish.
Yu Yao used her toes to pinch his clothes and made him come back. “Silly, there are no strawberries in this season.”
Jiang Zhonglin hesitated for a moment and said, “Then how about peaches? I can go get you some peaches.” Yu Yao liked peaches second only to strawberries.
“Alright,” Yu Yao answered casually.
Jiang Zhonglin left the house with excitement. Yu Yao waited and waited, eventually falling back asleep. When she woke up, she found that Jiang Zhonglin still hadn’t returned, and she guessed that the silly man had probably gone searching for strawberries.
Sure enough, after a while, Jiang Zhonglin came back, looking a bit dejected, carrying two bags—one with peaches and the other with… dried strawberries and strawberry tea.
Seeing that his shirt was wet, Yu Yao knew he must have searched many places and, of course, hadn’t found any fresh strawberries.
Jiang Zhonglin, looking embarrassed, placed the items in front of her. “I got dried strawberries and this strawberry tea. They say it’s very good, with a pretty authentic strawberry flavor. Would you like to try it?”
Yu Yao looked at him and thought, what a foolish man. She took a sip of the strawberry tea, which was indeed quite good, though a bit too sweet.
…
Yu Yao, holding the game console, looked at Jiang Zhonglin, who was no longer young but still smiled warmly at her. The wrinkles around his eyes weren’t unattractive; they gave him a sense of steadiness and warmth. He said, “The strawberries from the local fresh produce supermarket taste really good. Most of what’s sold now are varieties specially cultivated in recent years.”
Jiang Zhonglin spoke to his wife, then noticed the other person sitting nearby and approached her. He placed a seemingly old book in front of her and said, “Contact your teacher and check if this is the one he needs.”
Then he went to the kitchen to take the strawberries out of the fresh produce cabinet and wash them.
The girl, who was unfamiliar to Yu Yao, was stunned by the interaction between Professor Jiang and Yu Yao. She had initially been suspicious of the seemingly out-of-place woman but seeing that Professor Jiang was not at all surprised and spoke to her in a gentle manner, she felt quite confused.
Who exactly was this person? Could she be a relative of Professor Jiang?
She was so absorbed in her thoughts that she forgot to scan and send the book to her teacher.
Jiang Zhonglin brought the washed strawberries over and placed them in front of Yu Yao, asking, “Why didn’t you buy more?”
Yu Yao took one and joked, “I’m afraid I’ll make you go broke.”
Jiang Zhonglin smiled, “It’s okay, if you like them, just buy more.”
Yu Yao didn’t respond but moved the plate of strawberries over to the unfamiliar girl, saying, “Here, have some strawberries. Don’t be shy.”
