What Should I Do If I Time-Traveled Forty Years Later and My Lover Has Become an Old Man?
Forty Years Later Chapter 12.2

Jiang Zhonglin was too startled to speak, afraid Yu Yao might actually do something like that. Yu Yao found his reaction amusing, thinking that he was still the same young Jiang Zhonglin who seemed to have no resistance, as if his forty years of age had not made any difference.

When they were out and about before, Jiang Zhonglin was also shy about intimate gestures. Every time they held hands on the street, he would blush more than she did. Yu Yao had thought it was because of age back then, but now she realized it was more about his personality.

As she was thinking, she noticed Jiang Zhonglin gently pulled her hand down from his waist and held it in his own.

Yu Yao didn’t say anything, keeping her eyes ahead while gripping his hand tightly. His hand, no longer young and smooth, held hers firmly, just like the young man from years ago who had been shy but still held onto her tightly.

After walking around the green park for a while, Jiang Zhonglin went to the restroom. Yu Yao waited for him under a tree-shaded bench and started playing a mini-game on her personal terminal. The game was recommended by the two students from Haida she met when buying games, and Yu Yao quite enjoyed it, reaching level 230.

In this level, the character couldn’t climb up the cliff and kept falling down. Yu Yao tried several times unsuccessfully. When the game started again, she heard a voice beside her say, “When you’re at the bottom, pick up that round stone. It’s a bird egg. If you carry the egg, when you reach a point where you can’t find a foothold, a bird will fly over and you can catch a ride on it.”

Yu Yao didn’t look up. She completed the level before glancing up and saying, “Thanks.”

The voice belonged to a young man with a polished appearance. He was well-dressed and smiled broadly, leaning on the back of the bench and watching Yu Yao play.

“No need to thank me. It’s rare for a girl to like this game. You’ve made it to over 200 levels?” He winked. “I’ve played a few levels more than you. It gets harder, and there are many little tricks you need to figure out. I can teach you.”

Yu Yao smirked slightly, “No need. I prefer to figure it out myself.” The fun in such games is finding solutions on your own, and if someone tells you everything, what’s the point in playing?

The young man seemed disappointed but was reluctant to give up and continued, “It’s fine. I have time now. If I teach you, you can progress faster.”

Yu Yao realized he was hitting on her. To be honest, she looked decent, and being approached on the street was common. She was used to handling such situations.

She stood up, “Sorry, I need to find my boyfriend. He might have fallen in the restroom or something.”

With one hand in her pocket and playing the game with the other, she walked away without looking back. However, upon turning a corner, she saw the old man who had been in the restroom for a long time, not sure if he had fallen, standing at the street corner, staring at a large tree, lost in thought.

His back was very straight, giving him a dignified appearance, but his white hair made his silhouette look lonely and worn.

Yu Yao walked up to him, and upon turning her head, she realized she could see the bench she had just been sitting on through the sparse foliage.

Yu Yao paused, quickly figuring things out and mentally cursing the old bastard for not coming over when he saw a young man hitting on his wife.

Seeing her approach, Jiang Zhonglin smiled at her and said, “It’s getting late. We should head back for dinner.”

Back at home, after dinner, Yu Yao noticed he seemed completely unfazed, making her doubt if he had seen what happened earlier.

Later that night, she went downstairs to get some water and overheard Jiang Zhonglin on the phone.

He sighed and said, “If she really wants a divorce, then let her have it. Respect her wishes. After all, she’s still young, and there are many options for her. There’s no need to force her to stay with someone who’s not suitable and drag out the rest of her life…”

Still young, many options, dragging out the rest of her life? Yu Yao was infuriated, thinking about how they were now sleeping in separate rooms and how the old man got uncomfortable with any close interaction. So, he was waiting for her to bring up divorce?

Fuming, Yu Yao stormed over and kicked over the table with a loud crash. “Jiang Zhonglin! What are you saying!”

Jiang Zhonglin turned, surprised, with no trace of embarrassment on his face.

“What the hell did you just say!” Yu Yao yelled.

Jiang Zhonglin was stunned and replied, “An old friend of mine, his daughter is getting a divorce, and he called to discuss it and ask for my opinion.”

Yu Yao had completely misunderstood the situation, and now it was awkward.

The living room was eerily quiet after the loud noise. Yu Yao nonchalantly righted the overturned table and headed to the kitchen, “I’m getting a drink. You continue.”

As Yu Yao quickly went upstairs, Jiang Zhonglin continued the phone call. His friend, startled by the commotion, asked, “Old Jiang, what was that noise?”

Jiang Zhonglin didn’t answer immediately. Looking at the unfortunate table that Yu Yao had kicked over and then fixed, he couldn’t help but laugh, adjusting his glasses. He laughed quietly, afraid Yu Yao would hear and come back to kick the table again.

“It’s nothing. My wife was just having a tantrum,” Jiang Zhonglin said, barely containing his laughter.
