“Sister, are you looking to buy this game? We can introduce it to you~”
Yu Yao didn’t bring up her relationship with Jiang Teacher again and seriously chose a game based on the two young men’s recommendations. After making her choice, she exchanged contact information with them, adding them on WeChat.
So, why is WeChat still around after forty years? Not only is it still here, but it has also evolved into an all-in-one platform combining QQ, Weibo, and other communication and social networking services.
After choosing the games, the old and young couple went out to buy daily necessities and clothes. Yu Yao was casual about her shopping; she pushed a cart and threw items into it, while Jiang Zhonglin followed behind. Whenever he saw her toss in snacks, he would pick them up and check the ingredient lists. Yu Yao picked out quite a few junk foods because, after all, junk food was the source of joy in life. When she was feeling down, it was comforting to have some junk food.
Jiang Zhonglin didn’t object; he only said one thing throughout, pointing at a bag of red-packaged potato chips, “This product has too many synthetic fats and seasonings. It’s not very good. Try the one next to it; the ingredients are similar.”
Yu Yao replied, “Okay, you’re paying anyway,” and switched to the one he suggested.
Buying clothes was quick. Yu Yao chose a few comfortable outfits in her size. Finally, Jiang Zhonglin took her to the entrance of a store and said, “You go in and buy what you need. I’ll wait for you outside.”
Yu Yao was puzzled, “What store? Aren’t you coming in with me?”
When she walked in and saw the rows of lingerie, she realized. She turned around to see her old husband gazing up at the plaza’s dome. The sixty-five-year-old man didn’t have the face to accompany his twenty-eight-year-old wife into a lingerie store.
They bought a lot of items, and fortunately, delivery was available. They returned home and signed for a large number of packages at the door. After several trips back and forth, they spent nearly half a day unpacking and organizing everything.
That night, Yu Yao lay alone in the guest room and thought about how such a simple day had passed. Although her life had undergone significant changes, nothing seemed too difficult to accept— including the transformation of her husband into an old man. Jiang Zhonglin had managed to untangle the chaotic threads of her new life, making her feel much less anxious compared to the previous night.
Yu Yao lay on the bed playing the game she had bought earlier. She had to admit that games forty years later were much more enjoyable and immersive than before. The promotional claims about immersive experiences were not exaggerated. She lost track of time while playing and only realized how late it was when she heard a knock on the door.
Jiang Zhonglin knocked and called from outside, “Go to bed early. Stop playing games. You can play more tomorrow.”
Yu Yao turned to the closed door and suddenly thought of the younger Jiang Zhonglin. His academic workload was heavy, but whenever he had free time, he would always come over to her side when at home.
He was a bookworm and didn’t play games. Life seemed to offer no other pleasures apart from his field of study. On rare days off when she didn’t have to work, and while she was home playing games, Jiang Zhonglin would watch with longing, struggling to voice his wishes. Eventually, he decided to join her and asked her to teach him how to play. As a top student, he was incredibly bad at gaming, and even her clumsy efforts couldn’t help him. He managed to drop her high-level account by two ranks and got scolded by teammates.
He would then watch as she defeated those who had scolded him, driving them offline.
