Chapter 103 : My Mom’s Job Can Only Be Mine
The next day, Jiang Ye delivered twenty pounds of cotton on his own.
Jiang Yu counted out twelve yuan for him, but he refused.
“Sister Yunshan said this should be calculated at the purchase price.”
The purchase price was 0.4 yuan per pound, so she only needed to pay eight yuan.
Wang Yunshan felt that since this was for Jiang Yu’s friend, she shouldn’t profit from her.
Jiang Yu pushed the money towards him. “Tell her I earned this money, it’s not right for her to work for free.”
Jiang Ye had other matters to attend to, so she didn’t keep him any longer, she needed to deliver cotton to Xie Fei fei as well.
“I’m going to deliver the cotton to Fei fei, do you want to come?”
She was naturally asking He Tingyue, who was on break for a few days but seemed even busier than she was.
He Tingyue nodded. “Let’s go, I’ll take you.”
He didn’t want anyone else taking up Jiang Yu’s time on his rare day off.
They went straight to Xie Fei fei’s house, where Aunt Tang was already waiting at the door, even quicker than they were.
“Xiao Huang! Huang Ying! That girl came to see you again yesterday!”
With that shout, several neighbors came out.
Jiang Yu was puzzled.
Huang Ying opened the door, annoyed. “Aunt Tang, could you keep it down? The whole alley can hear you!”
Aunt Tang chuckled, her eyes fixed on what He Tingyue was carrying.
“I was just anxious!”
Jiang Yu said, “Aunt Huang, I brought the cotton. Shall we discuss it inside?”
Huang Ying nodded. “Alright, Aunt Tang, you all go back for now. I’ll talk to Jiang Yu about the details.”
“Alright, but don’t forget!”
Huang Ying waved her hand and led Jiang Yu and He Tingyue inside.
Once in the house, He Tingyue opened the bag for her to see.
“Twenty pounds, all here. Do you want to weigh it?”
Huang Ying waved her hand and directly handed over eighteen yuan.
“I’ve known you for a while, I trust you. The people outside are my neighbors. Last time, Aunt Tang overheard me talking with Jiang Yu.”
He Tingyue frowned. “Do they want some too?”
His immediate concern was how this might affect Jiang Yu.
Getting Jiang Ye involved was partly because he worried about Jiang Yu.
Huang Ying said, “I only promised to ask them, I didn’t say for sure. If you don’t want to, I’ll tell them no.”
Jiang Yu hurriedly said, “No need. Did Aunt Huang mention the price?”
“Yes, she did one yuan each.”
“Okay, I’ll have another person deliver it. His name is Lai Liu Zi.”
Huang Ying had already counted how much the others wanted, adding up to thirty-three pounds.
“Just send it next door to Aunt Tang’s house. She’ll distribute it herself, she’s home every day.”
Jiang Yu agreed. “Alright.”
As they were leaving, Aunt Tang came over again.
Huang Ying sighed. “Aunt Tang, let Jiang Yu leave first. There’s nothing here right now, it’ll come tomorrow. Just wait at home.”
Aunt Tang looked disappointed. “Tomorrow? Why don’t you give me some now?”
“How could I? My Fei fei is getting married, and I’m in a hurry to make her a quilt!”
Huang Ying ignored her further, sending Jiang Yu and her husband off before closing the door.
After delivering the cotton, Jiang Yu returned home to continue making clothes.
He Tingyue watched nearby. “This coat feels a bit small on me.”
The cotton coat she was making was black, and he instinctively thought it was for him.
Jiang Yu laughed. “It’s for Jiang Ye.”
He Tingyue’s expression turned a bit sour. “Why make it for him first?”
“I’m hurrying, maybe I can give it to him when I visit. This should be his first new piece of clothing, right?” Jiang Yu teased him.
He Tingyue didn’t respond, deciding to let Jiang Ye have it.
They were busy at home until the afternoon when the courtyard suddenly became lively.
It was said that Duan Yuzhen was bringing her boyfriend home to get engaged.
Jiang Yu immediately put down her work and pulled He Tingyue to sit at the door and eat peaches.
“If only we had some sunflower seeds, we should buy some next time.”
He Tingyue handed her another piece of peach. “Alright, there’s a yearly quota, we haven’t bought any yet this year.”
Because no one at home really liked them.
“Is Yan Wenxuan coming over for the first time? Why is she suddenly getting engaged?”
He Tingyue wasn’t very interested in the happenings in the courtyard, but since Jiang Yu was so engaged, he couldn’t help but comment.
“It’s probably because of what happened yesterday.”
Yesterday, Duan Yuzhen had a big argument with her family and couldn’t wait to move out.
Without a job, the only way to move out was to get married.
Jiang Yu frowned. “Her taste is really poor, how could she choose Yan Wenxuan?”
Just then, He Feiyan walked in, pausing. “Thanks for the subtle shade.”
He Tingyue replied nonchalantly, “It really is poor taste.”
He Feiyan rolled her eyes. What could she do? That was her embarrassing history.
“I just walked in and made a round near Duan’s house. Guess what I heard?”
Jiang Yu’s eyes lit up. “What did you hear?”
“Duan Yuzhen and Yan Wenxuan are getting married, but they don’t plan to move out!”
Jiang Yu was stunned for a moment before asking, “What does that mean? Is Yan Wenxuan moving in?”
He Feiyan nodded vigorously. “Yes! They said Yan Wenxuan’s sister’s family came from the countryside, and her brother-in-law is taking over their father’s job as a sewage worker, so there’s not enough space at home.”
Jiang Yu thought for a moment and shook her head.
“That might be one reason, but he definitely has other motives.”
He Feiyan patted her head. “Sister-in-law, you’re so smart. I just heard Duan Yuzhen complaining that she wanted to take over her mother’s job.”
The Duan family had quite a few jobs in total.
The grandfather used to work as a fitter in a steel mill but was replaced by his second son.
The old lady had passed away, but she was an accountant at Factory No. 2, and later, Duan Hongmin, Duan Yuzhen’s father, took over the job.
Then Duan Hongmin gave up his job for his eldest son, Duan Jianren, who took over, so that one job was passed down through three generations.
Wen Yan was a teacher, and she earned that job herself before marrying Duan Hongmin.
Now, Duan Yuzhen was causing a fuss because she thought her brother had taken over their father’s job, and Wen Yan’s job should rightfully be hers. That would be fair.
Jiang Yu sighed inwardly. “That’s hardly fair. Doesn’t she have a younger brother? If she takes over Wen Yan’s job, what’s fair for her brother? It’s not that she can’t have a job, it’s clear she’s been fooled by Yan Wenxuan.”
If she got the job, then both Wen Yan and Duan Hongmin, and even their grandfather, would have to rely on their grandchildren for support?
Even if Duan Yuzhen took over Wen Yan’s job, the salary wouldn’t be high enough to support the whole family, would it?
Besides, they weren’t even married yet, and Yan Wenxuan was already planning to take advantage of the Duan family. Would he really support his in-laws in their old age?
“Did she agree?”
“Of course not, the whole family is making a fuss about it.”
You could hear Duan Yuzhen’s voice even through the wall, she was pointing her anger at Lin Donghua.
“Don’t think I don’t know you’re just waiting for me to be thrown out so you can take over my mother’s job! Lin Donghua, I’m telling you plainly now, my mother’s job is only for me. Don’t dream about it!”
