Chapter 104 : The abacus beads fell on my face
He Feiyan clicked her tongue and shook her head. “Mrs. Lin has raised an ungrateful person over the years.”
She genuinely had no words for He Feiyan.
Duan Jianren had some flaws in his personality, but he truly doted on his only sister.
Now, however, that sister was causing chaos in the family.
This matter had dragged on for a long time, but in the end, it was Old Master Duan who made the final decision, saying that Duan Yuzhen could live wherever she wanted after marriage, but they wouldn’t discuss her job for now.
Wen Yan was still young, if she gave up her job now, would the older generation even be able to survive?
Once the old man spoke, Duan Yuzhen was firmly put in her place and couldn’t stir up any more trouble.
Yan Wenxuan felt a bit disappointed. He hadn’t even been confirmed as a member of the family yet, and now Duan Yuzhen didn’t have a job either. How would they manage after marriage?
Thinking about it, Duan Yuzhen’s situation was even worse than Zhang Xiyue’s.
Duan Yuzhen didn’t consider these factors, she just wanted to hurry up and get married to save face in front of Jiang Yu.
She wanted to find someone better, but unfortunately, she didn’t have the ability to do so.
She linked her arm with Yan Wenxuan’s and walked towards the southern room, lifting her chin high as if she had found a rare treasure.
“I’m getting married.”
She glanced at He Tingyue, as if announcing it to them.
He Tingyue and Jiang Yu exchanged glances, thinking this was simply absurd.
After all these years of choosing, she had picked the worst one.
He Tingyue ignored her and stood up to wash the plate that held the peaches.
This dismissive attitude was what upset Duan Yuzhen the most.
Meanwhile, both He Tingyue and Jiang Yu knew what kind of person Yan Wenxuan was, their gaze towards him was no different than how one would look at trash.
Yan Wenxuan felt uncomfortable under their stares.
Jiang Yu didn’t want to bother with them, but He Feiyan, having grown up together, decided to say a few more words.
“Duan Yuzhen, are you really going to marry him?”
Duan Yuzhen huffed, “Of course I am.”
He Feiyan rolled her eyes. “Is he moving in with you in our courtyard as a son-in-law?”
“Of course not!” Duan Yuzhen immediately denied it, looking disdainful. “I’m not Xie Fei fei, how could I take in a son-in-law? They need to take in a son-in-law because they don’t have any sons. My family has sons.”
Jiang Yu raised an eyebrow. “If he’s not moving in, then why is he living with you?”
Duan Yuzhen raised her voice. “His sister got married in the countryside, and he has to take over his father’s job to come back to the city.”
Yan Wenxuan made it sound so pitiful that she momentarily softened. Since she couldn’t imagine doing a sewage worker’s job anyway, she agreed.
After he explained, she felt it made more sense.
Her parents both had jobs, why should only the son take over? What about her?
He Tingyue felt like ripping open her head to see how much nonsense was inside.
“You can step back for his sister, give up his father’s job, and give up your house. When it’s your turn to take over your mother’s job, will he make you give your job to his sister? Duan Yuzhen, I never knew you were so generous.”
Duan Yuzhen and Yan Wenxuan’s faces changed simultaneously.
Yan Wenxuan quickly defended himself. “My dad is a sewage worker, I can’t possibly take over his job, and neither can Yuzhen. It’s just giving my brother-in-law a chance, it doesn’t harm her.”
“How does it not harm her? If that job is still your father’s, your parents could help support both families. If your brother-in-law takes over, will he give you any money? He still has to take care of his own parents, it would be lucky if he can support yours.”
He Feiyan scoffed. “You’re playing innocent now, but you’re not fooling me. I’m not as foolish as Duan Yuzhen.”
Duan Yuzhen thought about it carefully, and it was indeed true!
She grabbed Yan Wenxuan by the collar and angrily questioned, “You’ve been plotting for my mother’s job from the start! Giving your job to your brother-in-law and making me take over my mother’s job, using my family’s money to support yours! Yan Wenxuan, you really know how to play your cards right!”
“I didn’t! Yuzhen, listen to me, we’ve known each other for so long. Haven’t I treated you well? How could I scheme against you?” Yan Wenxuan hurriedly explained.
He tried to grab Duan Yuzhen’s hand several times, but she kept shaking him off.
Duan Yuzhen gritted her teeth, after this commotion, she had lost both face and substance.
But she couldn’t swallow her anger!
“Let’s break up! I don’t want to be with you anymore!”
Yan Wenxuan’s face changed drastically. He had already broken up with Zhang Xiyue, if Duan Yuzhen rejected him, who would marry him?
“Yuzhen, marriage is not a game, you can’t just say you want to break up.” He held back his anger, jaw clenched.
“If we had just started dating and you didn’t like me, I would definitely break up with you. But we’ve been together for such a long time, you’re mine, and you might even be pregnant with my child. If I agree to break up with you now, wouldn’t that be shameless?”
Duan Yuzhen was so furious she raised her hand and slapped him hard.
“You’re talking nonsense!”
Yan Wenxuan took the slap without dodging or avoiding.
“If I said I was completely innocent and broke up without a care, that would be nonsense and irresponsible!” He spoke with righteous indignation.
The two stood in the middle of the courtyard, their voices loud and clear, like a public announcement.
Old Master Duan was furious and kicked a nearby chair away.
He strode forward, marching straight toward Duan Yuzhen.
“I ask you, have you really done something shameless with him?”
Duan Yuzhen was stunned, how would she know?
It wasn’t her first time dating, but before, it was just holding hands at most.
She had done some inappropriate things with Yan Wenxuan, but she didn’t know if that counted…
Seeing her expression, Old Master Duan assumed she was tacitly admitting it and slapped her hard.
“Get married! Tomorrow, I’ll have your parents come over to discuss the marriage!”
Everyone in the courtyard knew about their situation now, there was no way to avoid marriage.
Wen Yan couldn’t help but shout, “Dad!”
It was clear that Yan Wenxuan wasn’t a serious person if they got married, Duan Yuzhen would have no way back.
Old Master Duan waved his hand dismissively. “Shouting won’t help. This is the path she chose herself, everyone must take responsibility for their choices.”
Duan Yuzhen fell silent, tacitly accepting his words.
Just today on the way home, she had been fantasizing about how dignified it would be to bring her boyfriend home.
Yet, somehow, everything had spiraled out of control.
He Feiyan sighed, she had said what she needed to say. Duan Yuzhen had made her choice, and there was no reasoning with the damned fool.
“Brother, it’s time to cook,” she called out.
The onlookers dispersed, as it was time to prepare the meal.
Jiang Yu stood up, returned the chair to its place, and measured the area in the yard.
“Let’s plant grapes here next spring. Find a sweet variety so we can eat them by autumn.”
He Tingyue nodded. “Sure, I’ll keep an eye out.”
He Zhengdong and He Lilan, who arrived late, walked into the courtyard.
“Brother, what’s for dinner tonight?”
“Sister-in-law, what’s for dinner tonight?”
He Tingyue glared at them. “Besides eating, is there anything else in your heads?”
Jiang Yu rummaged in the kitchen, having already used up most of the meat tickets from the last wedding.
Originally, He Tingyue had gotten up early to go buy meat, but she had stopped him.
What kind of family could eat meat every day?
With the meat tickets she had, it would be lucky to eat meat every few days.
“How about steamed sausages, stir-fried cabbage with eggs, and some steamed buns?”
The cabbage was large enough to last.
Hearing about the sausages, everyone naturally had no objections. Those who could start the fire did so, while others washed vegetables, each fulfilling their duties.
