Chapter 110 : The Thief in the House

Jiang Ye climbed up the tree in no time at all, like a monkey.

“Sister, don’t move. I’ll pick them and let my brother-in-law catch them below.”

Jiang Yu smiled and took out two pairs of tongs and gloves she had brought, saying, “I’m prepared, so just pick them.”

He Tingyue even produced a folding knife from nowhere and said, “Go ahead and pick.”

There were many chestnuts that had just fallen to the ground, but Jiang Yu wasn’t interested in them, she only wanted the freshly picked, plump chestnuts.

Jiang Ye moved quickly, filling a basket and passing it down to He Tingyue, who set it aside and handed the empty basket back up.

He sat with Jiang Yu and started cracking the chestnuts.

It was clear that Jiang Yu was no novice at this, she skillfully opened the chestnuts.

Before long, the three of them had cracked open an entire basket of chestnuts.

Jiang Yu lifted it up and said, “It’s several dozen kilograms.”

Eating too many chestnuts isn’t good either, this is enough.

“Come down, that’s plenty!”

Jiang Ye jumped down from the tree and looked up.

“We worked hard, but at first glance, it looks like nothing has changed.”

These chestnut trees had been growing for many years, with spiky chestnuts hanging densely on the branches.

They had only picked from one tree, and there was still plenty left.

“Should I ask Liu zi if he wants any? If he does, I’ll bring Feiyan next time to help pick some.”

She was clearly thinking about making some money, eager to sell anything she saw.

Jiang Yu looked to He Tingyue for his opinion.

He Tingyue smiled and said, “That’s a good idea. Otherwise, it would be a waste to let them fall. Let’s go ask later.”

Jiang Ye nodded vigorously. “Okay, I’ll stay here and pick some more. They won’t go bad, and I can help without needing to bring anyone else.”

Feiyan was a city girl who hadn’t experienced hardship; she wouldn’t know how to pick chestnuts.

If Liuzi doesn’t want them, they can just keep them for giving away.

“These chestnuts are too heavy. How about we leave them here and pick persimmons before heading back?” Jiang Yu suggested, weighing the basket and finding it cumbersome.

They needed to avoid people on the way back otherwise, it would be hard to hide all this.

After that, Jiang Yu led them to find the persimmon trees.

“The persimmons on these two trees are big and sweet. You should try them.”

Jiang Yu casually picked one, wiped it on her sleeve, and took a bite.

It tasted just as good as before.

Jiang Ye sighed, “Sister, no wonder no one has discovered this place. It’s too remote, and most people wouldn’t dare come here.”

Not everyone loves to wander up mountains, there are wild animals and running into one could be dangerous.

Jiang Yu found a clean spot to sit down.

“When you’re hungry, you’ll chew on tree bark, who cares about danger?”

Especially in autumn and winter, when there were no wild vegetables, this was all they had to eat.

“Enough talking, let’s hurry and pick. Once we’re done, we’ll head back.”

Persimmons were easier to pick than chestnuts, they could just pick them and put them in a basket.

“Don’t pick too many, you won’t be able to carry them.”

He Tingyue planned to carry the basket of chestnuts, take a few persimmons for himself, and let Jiang Yu carry the rest.

If you pick too much, you won’t be able to carry it back, so it’s better to leave it on the tree and come back next time.

Jiang Ye said, “Sister, We can’t finish them all, and leaving them on the tree will feed the birds too.”

“Okay, that’s enough. Let’s head down the mountain first.”

Jiang Ye nodded. “I’ll go pack the hens and eggs for you. You two head down first. Don’t forget, Uncle Youfu has another chicken at home.”

Jiang Yu slapped her forehead, realizing she almost forgot. “Don’t touch the chicken you have. I’ll take the one from Uncle Youfu’s house. I might need to come back tomorrow.”

It would be too obvious to bring back three chickens at once.

“Okay, then put the backpack down, and I’ll help you carry it.”

Jiang Yu waved her hand. “You still need to go back to pick chestnuts. Go ahead, don’t worry about me. Your brother-in-law and I aren’t going home, we’re heading straight back to the city.”

After hearing this, Jiang Ye didn’t delay any longer and went directly towards the chestnut tree.

Jiang Yu and He Tingyue carried the chestnuts and persimmons down the mountain, stopping by He Youfu’s house to get a chicken.

“Aunt, I’ll leave some of these chestnuts for you. We’re heading back to the city first. You can come visit me next time.”

Before Liu Junmei could react, Jiang Yu had already poured out some chestnuts and followed He Tingyue away.

After they left Nanghe Village, Wang Meili heard Yang Cuilan come over and ask, “When Jiang Yu left, she was still holding a chicken. Did you give it to her? Wang Meili, I didn’t expect you to be so generous.”

Wang Meili cursed, “How dare you steal my chicken!”

When she got home, she counted her chickens two or three times and found that none were missing.

“Where did that damn girl get her chicken?”

After asking around, she learned that Jiang Yu had taken it from the team leader’s home.

Yang Cuilan guessed, “Maybe she and his husband bought it. Tsk tsk, she doesn’t let you, her own mother, earn money. Seems Jiang Yu doesn’t treat you well.”

Wang Meili spat, “You’re talking nonsense! My Jiang Yu knows her brother is injured and needs chicken to recover, so she wouldn’t dare ask me for it. She even gave me a big jar of Ya Shuang Snow Cream. It’s a huge jar and only costs 50 cents in the city. Just see if your old son-in-law will give you something like that!”

No matter what happens at home, when facing outsiders, she and Jiang Yu are united.

She knows how to keep things separate.

Aunt Du didn’t quite believe her, saying, “Wang Meili, you’re just bragging. If Jiang Yu really gave you such an expensive gift, why haven’t you used it?”

“It must be a lie. I don’t believe it. Who can brag better than Wang Meili? Nothing she says is worth listening to.”

“Who would use a fifty-cent cream?”

“You shouldn’t spend money like this, you can’t live like this!”

Wang Meili pouted, “My son-in-law earns over 100 yuan a month in the city, so 50 cents for Ya Shuang is nothing. If you don’t believe me, I’ll take you home to see for yourself!”

Yang Cuilan hurried to catch up, feeling a bit jealous but still wanting to take a look.

When they got home, Wang Meili asked them to wait outside while she went in to get it.

She kept the jar of Ya Shuang locked up.

But when she opened it, she found that the Ya Shuang she hadn’t even used once was missing!

Wang Meili searched the entire house but couldn’t find it.

She screamed, “Damn it! Who stole my vanishing cream?”

She rushed out of the house, shouting in despair “My vanishing cream is gone! My Ya Shuang, the Ya Shuang that cost fifty cents a can!”

Yang Cuilan curled her lips and said, “Wang Meili must be bragging.”

But after Jiang Li gets married, she can also mention it and ask Jiang Li to buy her a can.

Aunt Du muttered, “Looking at her, I don’t think she’s just bragging. Could she really be missing?”

Wang Meili looked really anxious.

“Meili, if you don’t have it, don’t shout. We won’t laugh at you.” Yang Cuilan said gloatingly.

Wang Meili slapped her thigh and said, “I really did have it. I’m not bragging. My Jiang Yu just gave it to me. She also gave her father a pack of Daqianmen! But somehow, the things disappeared.”

Aunt Du and the others looked at each other in bewilderment, “Could it really have been stolen?”

Wang Meili panicked “But I locked it. I put it in the cabinet and locked it.”

Aunt Du said, “It must be a thief in the house. Who else would know where you put your keys?”

Wang Meili was stunned and thought about it carefully. Everyone in the family was out and Jiang Hao was the only one at home!

Her face changed drastically and she pushed open Jiang Hao’s door.

“Jiang Hao, did you take my vanishing cream?”

Jiang Hao looked guilty and got up from the bed.

“Mom, Du Juan came to see me just now. I thought she had finally come here and couldn’t go back empty-handed, so I sent Ya Shuang to her.”

Wang Meili was so angry that she raised her hand and hit him twice, glaring at him with disappointment.

“You have no ambition! You just broke up with her, but when she shows up, you act like a boneless person!”
