From Fiancée to Slum : A Tale of Loss Chapter 111

Chapter 111 : How can we survive this day?

Jiang Yu didn’t bring back many persimmons from her trip, but the journey from Nanghe Village back to the city was exhausting nonetheless.

She and He Tingyue entered the courtyard carrying so many items that it was hard to be inconspicuous.

Xu Lihua immediately called out, “Jiang Yu, weren’t you supposed to visit your family? Why are you bringing back so much stuff?”

Everyone turned to look.

Sure enough, they saw both He Tingyue and Jiang Yu carrying baskets, with Jiang Yu also holding a chicken.

Everyone envied them, who else brought a chicken back home when visiting in-laws?

Then they thought of Jiang Ting, Jiang Yu’s sister, and wondered why she hadn’t brought back anything like this.

Lin Hongxia shot a glare at Jiang Ting, her eyes nearly bulging with anger.

“Useless thing!”

Jiang Ting bit her lip, feeling wronged.

Why was Wang Meili so biased, treating them differently when they were both daughters?

Jiang Yu smiled and explained, “This chicken was traded for, it wasn’t given to me by my mom. She wouldn’t even spare a chicken for me, all of them go to my brother.”

Hearing this, Jiang Ting’s expression improved, it made sense since Wang Meili was indeed stingy.

“What did you trade the chicken for?” Xu Lihua’s gaze was fixed on the chicken in Jiang Yu’s hands.

Jiang Yu chuckled, “Aunt Xu, my family has many kids who are growing, they need to eat well.”

Xu Lihua’s eyes widened, “So this chicken is for eating?”

Jiang Yu countered, “What else would you do with a chicken?”

Xu Lihua replied, “Of course, it lays eggs! Do you even know how to live?”

Jiang Yu smiled, “I traded for two hens as well, specifically to raise for eggs in the yard.”

Xu Lihua was left speechless.

It had to be said that the He family had the best life in the entire courtyard.

Even if it was good before, it was mostly from eating in the cafeteria, rarely cooking at home.

Ever since Jiang Yu married in, they had been cooking at home every day. The cured meat from a couple of days ago had made the neighborhood kids cry with envy.

And today, they were stewing chicken, unbelievable!

“With all this meat, how can you keep living like this?”

Jiang Yu laughed, “Of course, that’s how life is supposed to be. Don’t you eat meat in your households?”

She followed He Tingyue back to their side of the house, closing the door to shut out everyone’s gaze.

The chicken, unable to walk with its legs tied, was casually placed in the yard without much thought.

She took out the persimmons and counted, there were about forty or fifty, bigger than He Tingyue’s fist.

“I’ll send some to Aunt, some to Fei fei’s family, and later, I’ll give Liu Zi some. As for the neighbors in the courtyard, I’ll give them chestnuts instead.”

He Tingyue had no objections “You decide, just save a few for me to take to the security office tomorrow.”

Jiang Yu set aside what she planned to give away, keeping ten for themselves, planning to pick more for making dried persimmons tomorrow.

Winter in Beicheng was cold, making dried persimmons less likely to spoil.

Since there were so many people watching earlier, it was better to divide the chestnuts first.

“Pour out half the chestnuts, and I’ll take the rest to distribute.”

“Okay.”

He Tingyue had a casual relationship with the elderly neighbors, not because he was stingy or lacking in money, but because he simply didn’t think about these things and lacked the awareness to maintain good neighborly relationships.

Watching him pour out half the chestnuts, Jiang Yu took a basket and headed over to the Duan family first.

“Sister Lin.”

“Hey!”

Lin Donghua hurried out, smiling brightly.

“It’s Jiang Yu.”

“I brought back some chestnuts from my family and thought I’d share some with everyone. Let me give some for you.”

Lin Donghua quickly replied, “Oh, you shouldn’t have! Just keep them for yourself, with so many kids at home.”

“There’s plenty, eating too many isn’t good. Everyone should have a taste.”

Jiang Yu packed more for Lin Donghua since the Duan family had more members, dividing it so everyone got two or three each, which was quite a bit.

When giving them to Xu Lihua, she packed a bit less, causing Xu Lihua to show her dissatisfaction “Why so few? You’re being stingy.”

Jiang Yu replied, “Aunt Xu, you have fewer people in your family.”

Just three of them, how much could she really give?

Next was the Sun family, but Sun’s mother was out, so Zhao Qing happily accepted the chestnuts.

When it came to the Fu family, she didn’t skip them either.

However, Lin Hongxia and Jiang Ting stayed silent, and just then, Fu Xiangyang came back.

“Big sister, is there something up?”

He called out to Jiang Ting, saying “Big sister” was not inappropriate.

Jiang Yu moved the chestnuts forward, “I wanted to ask if Jiang Ting wanted some, but she didn’t respond.”

Fu Xiangyang frowned, “She does want some, thank you, big sister. She probably didn’t hear you. I’ll tell her when we get back.”

He couldn’t quite understand why, despite being twins, Jiang Ting and Jiang Yu had such a bad relationship.

Couldn’t they get along?

He thought Jiang Yu was quite nice.

Fu Xiangyang took the chestnuts, once again reflecting in his heart on how he wished he had married her instead.

Next was the Tong family, but their child had gone to their grandmother’s house and hadn’t returned yet, so a Sister Li they had invited took over.

“Thank you, Xiao Jiang.”

“No need to be polite, sister.”

Just as Jiang Yu was about to head back, she heard Zeng Chang’s voice “Why didn’t I get any?”

She turned around, “Uncle Zeng, you’re back?”

Zeng Chang clicked his tongue, “Don’t call me uncle, I’m engaged to your sister now, so you should call me brother-in-law.”

As soon as this was said, everyone’s gossip senses were piqued.

Especially Xu Lihua, who immediately shouted, “What’s going on here?”

Just then, Sun’s mother returned and deliberately glanced over “Old Ruan, Old Zeng is getting married, they’re engaged, did you know?”

Sun’s mother’s expression changed slightly, “Getting married?”

Xu Lihua had a look of delight: “You didn’t know? It seems Old Zeng thinks of you as an outsider.”

Sun Zailiang shot a glare at her, “Aunt Xu, what kind of talk is that? My mom is an outsider to Uncle Zeng, of course.”

Xu Lihua scoffed and stopped talking.

But in her heart, she thought that if there was no relationship, how could she have accepted everything he had sent her?

Those things had been shared equally with Sun Zailiang, so what was the difference?

Meanwhile, Zeng Chang heard Sun Zailiang distancing himself and saw that Sun’s mother didn’t deny it, his expression darkened.

After all, he had loved the same woman for so many years, and it hurt.

Jiang Yu asked, “Uncle Zeng, why didn’t you say anything after coming back for so long?”

Zeng Chang cleared his throat and stood with his hands behind his back.

“I wanted to wait for everyone to be here before making an announcement.”

After all, this was his second marriage, and he needed to make a formal announcement.

Jiang Yu replied with little interest, “Then go ahead and tell everyone.”

She turned and went back to her room.

Zeng Chang smiled brightly, “I met a suitable partner in Nanghe Village, and we’re engaged. Tomorrow, I’ll go propose, and we’ll be getting married soon. This partner is Jiang Yu’s cousin, Jiang Li. By the way, I’m now related to Xiangyang and Xiao He!”

Fu Xiangyang’s expression changed, feeling uneasy and embarrassed.

What kind of taste did Jiang Li have to catch the eye of someone like Zeng Chang?

He secretly blamed Jiang Ting, thinking, “How could your family be like this?”

Jiang Ting was even more shocked, in her previous life, Jiang Li had married a countryside man and led a mediocre life without making any waves.

How could she suddenly be marrying an old widower?
