Chapter 19 : Is This Your Eldest Sister?

Two days later, Jiang Yu had just received her ten yuan manuscript fee when Jiang Ting dragged her back to Nanghe Village, claiming that Wang Meili was sick and wanted her to come home to see her.

Before Jiang Yu could go back to her aunt’s house to get her things, Jiang Ting pushed her into the car.

They hurried back to Nanghe Village.

As soon as she entered the door, she saw a man about the same age as Jiang Yonghua staring at her with wide eyes.

Next to Jiang Hao sat a woman who looked at her with a haughty demeanor.

Jiang Yu wasn’t naive, seeing Wang Meili’s healthy complexion made her realize why they had tricked her into coming back.

“This is your eldest sister?” Du Juan asked.

Jiang Hao nodded. “This is my eldest sister, Jiang Yu.”

Du Juan looked Jiang Yu up and down as if she were inspecting merchandise.

Jiang Ting pushed Jiang Yu forward with a smug expression, as if she could already picture Jiang Yu marrying this widower.

Jiang Yu felt numb, as if a hole had opened in her heart, letting in a cold breeze.

These were her family members, yet they were calculating her worth as if they were selling her off for a good price.

Wang Meili smiled and said, “Jiang Yu, this is Du Juan’s second uncle, you…”

Jiang Yu interrupted coldly, “Whose relative it is has nothing to do with me, there’s no need to introduce him.”

Du Juan was furious and immediately stood up, asking, “What’s your attitude?”

Jiang Yu looked at her calmly. “What attitude do I need? My family has been poor farmers for three generations, and we earn our living with our own hands. It doesn’t matter if it’s you or even a high-ranking official, we’ll maintain this attitude! I want to ask you, who are you? Which capitalist lady escaped from a landlord’s family? You’re acting so high and mighty.”

Du Juan’s face changed drastically, she panicked as this heavy accusation was thrust upon her.

“You! You’re talking nonsense! I’m just a country girl, my family isn’t a landlord!”

Jiang Yu raised an eyebrow and smirked sarcastically. “Is that so? Then why do you act superior and make us, the children of poor farmers, feel inferior?”

“I don’t!” Du Juan retorted sharply.

Old Lady Ye came out with a gloomy expression, trying to mediate. “Jiang Yu, why are you arguing with a guest?”

Jiang Yu smiled coldly. “A guest? Grandma, if you hadn’t called her a guest, I would have thought she was a master from the feudal era!”

“Alright, are you done?” Old Lady Ye scolded softly, then began introducing Du Juan’s second uncle to Jiang Yu. “This is Du Juan’s second uncle. Although he’s older, he’s very down-to-earth. I asked you to come back today so you could meet him. If he’s suitable, we can arrange the marriage tomorrow and pick a good date for the wedding.”

Her tone was authoritative, it was clear she wasn’t seeking Jiang Yu’s opinion but was merely informing her of a decision that had already been made.

Jiang Yu replied coldly, “Don’t worry about my marriage. My aunt has already introduced me to someone from the city.”

When these words came out, everyone stared at her in disbelief.

Jiang Ting instinctively denied, “Impossible! You’re lying!”

She was anxious and spoke hurriedly. “Mom, she must be trying to avoid marriage and is lying to us! City people aren’t cabbages in the field, she can’t just pick and choose!”

Jiang Yu laughed and suddenly took out two yuan from her pocket, placing it on the table. “Mom, this is the money I just earned from writing. It’s indeed difficult for Jiang Ting to marry a city person, but I’m different. I have my aunt, and I have the ability to earn money.”

She glared at Jiang Ting, whose face turned red with anger, calmly fabricating a nonexistent person. “That person is a reporter for the newspaper. I met him when I went to submit an article. We hit it off immediately, and our relationship is very stable now.”

Then she looked at the silent Jiang Yonghua, hoping for his support. “Of course, if Dad insists on giving up a son-in-law from the city and makes me marry a man older than you, making outsiders laugh at me, then there’s nothing I can do.”

Du Juan gnashed her teeth in anger. “How can you talk like that!”

Jiang Yu curled her lips into a smirk. “I’m saying it like this, can’t you understand? Now I see you’re not acting like a master, you’re just a dog barking at everyone you see.”

Du Juan was so angry that she even wanted to confront Jiang Yu, but Jiang Hao stopped her. “Listen to what she’s saying! She insulted me, and I can’t even be angry!”

Jiang Hao had no time to comfort her and was secretly observing Jiang Yonghua’s expression. His silence indicated he did not deny Jiang Yu’s words.

It seemed today’s meeting would not happen.

“Jiang Hao!” Du Juan screamed. “Say something!”

Jiang Yonghua frowned and looked at her disapprovingly. Jiang Hao treating such a woman as a treasure showed how short-sighted he was.

They hadn’t even entered the door, and already the place was in chaos.

“Let’s set Jiang Yu’s marriage aside for now.” His words meant the matter was settled.

Jiang Hao’s heart sank, and he said unwillingly “Dad, what about my marriage?”

Jiang Yonghua said sternly, “It’s only fifty yuan for the betrothal gift. If you’re willing, you can get married. If you’re not willing, it just means you two are not destined to be together.”

Du Juan stood up suddenly, her voice tense “Uncle, let’s go!”

Seeing his girlfriend leaving, Jiang Hao wanted to chase after her, but he didn’t dare to move because there were so many people watching at home.

Jiang Yu didn’t want to stay and watch the show, so she turned to Jiang Yonghua and said, “Dad, when I was leaving, my aunt told me to go back early, so I’m leaving first.”

Jiang Yonghua nodded, and asked Wang Meili to pick some vegetables from the vegetable garden and asked Jiang Yu to carry them back.

Jiang Yu didn’t bother to be polite with him and just took the food and left.

Jiang Ting looked at her gradually receding back, then slapped Jiang Hao on the head with her backhand.

“You’re dead! I brought the person back, but you can’t keep him here!”

Jiang Hao laughed in anger, “Second sister, please be reasonable. Jiang Yu won’t agree. What can we do?”

Jiang Ting spat in his face, “You have a pig brain? The idea was invented by humans! Let your the second uncle, hug Jiang Yu and tear off her clothes. Her innocence is gone, and she has no choice but to marry!”

Wang Meili slapped her on the back and angrily yelled, “Are you deaf? Your aunt introduced a city guy to your sister! There are city guys who won’t marry, but you want your sister to marry a widower in his forties?”

Jiang Ting stiffened her neck “You are the only ones who believe her. Jiang Yu must be lying! Jiang Hao, you better be careful. If you don’t marry Jiang Yu, your wife will run away!”

Jiang Hao had a bitter face. What could he do?

He couldn’t come up with the money and couldn’t persuade Jiang Yu.

Jiang Ting got angry when she saw him like this and didn’t plan to say anything more.

Then he shouted to Wang Meili, “Mom, pick some vegetables for me, I’ll take them back!”

“You’re asking for trouble. You just got married and now you go back to your parents’ home to beg for money. No matter what vegetables you want, you come here empty-handed. Do you expect me to give you anything?” Wang Meili refused.

Jiang Ting was very dissatisfied “Why does Jiang Yu have it and I don’t?”

Wang Meili sneered, “Jiang Yu sent money back, what did you take? You dared to come empty-handed on the day of the return visit. Your family is full of stingy people, shameless! Get out of here, go back to your home!”
