From Fiancée to Slum : A Tale of Loss Chapter 52

Chapter 52 : Son-in-law

The Lin family’s messy affairs are hardly a secret, pretty much everyone living in the same alley knows about them.

Lin Changan’s father has lost his mind. Not only is he using his own salary to support someone else’s child, but he also wants to hold on to Lin Changan’s salary.

Miao Liyun’s son sold off all the belongings left by Lin Changan’s mother for scrap to buy ice cream, which finally pushed Lin Changan to take action.

That little chubby kid, with his sweet talk, managed to charm Lin Changan’s father, leading to Lin Changan moving into a single dormitory.

Xie Fei fei opened her mouth, and just a few words exposed the Lin family’s dirty laundry.

Miao Liyun felt embarrassed and, realizing she couldn’t argue any further, fled in humiliation.

Once outside the department store, Jiang Yu looked puzzled.

“You helped Lin Changan last time, do you like him?”

Xie Fei fei’s round face suddenly turned bright red, and she quickly denied it. “No, I don’t! Stop talking nonsense! I just heard about the Lin family’s issues and was just being fair!”

Jiang Yu raised an eyebrow. “If you don’t like him, why are you so flustered? Your face is all red.”

Xie Fei fei shot her a glare, then surrendered under Jiang Yu’s teasing gaze.

“Fine, I admit it! I have a bit of a crush on him. What do you think about me asking him to be my family’s son-in-law?”

Jiang Yu said, “Why not just ask him directly if he’s willing?”

Xie Fei fei frowned. “I can’t do that!”

“Then have your dad ask.”

Xie Fei fei: “……”

They parted ways outside the department store, each heading home.

However, Xie Fei fei was stopped on the way by none other than Lin Changan.

“I heard you want me to be your husband?” Lin Changan leaned against the wall, staring at her without blinking.

Coincidentally, Xie Fei fei had just had a showdown with Miao Liyun in the department store, and Lin Changan was right there listening.

He felt quite conflicted, questioning how someone he barely knew was willing to defend him like that.

Then, as soon as he stepped out, he overheard her and her friend chatting about wanting him as a son-in-law.

Xie Fei fei’s face turned as red as a tomato, she couldn’t believe he found out what she just said.

“You were eavesdropping!”

Lin Changan scoffed, “With how loud you were talking, I didn’t need to eavesdrop. The neighboring store could hear you.”

Xie Fei fei stared at him in shock. “Was it really that loud?”

Lin Changan chuckled, her face looked so pinchable, it made his hands itch.

“Just admit it.”

Xie Fei fei lowered her head and mumbled, “I did…”

Lin Changan nodded, “Okay, I accept! But I’ve never been a son-in-law before, so I don’t know the rules. Do I need to formally propose? When do we get the marriage certificate? The kid will have your last name, right? Any other conditions?”

Xie Fei fei’s mind exploded, it felt unreal.

“Y-you… what did you just say?”

“I said I accept. What are the conditions for being a son-in-law?”

Lin Changan was a bit impatient, she seemed a little slow on the uptake.

Xie Fei fei felt a surge of excitement, she hadn’t expected this to happen so quickly.

“Lin Changan, are you sure? It’s a son-in-law deal, and the kid gets my last name.”

Lin Changan nodded, smirking, “My last name isn’t exactly something to inherit.”

Xie Fei fei could tell he was completely disenchanted with the Lin family.

She stepped forward, and given her height, even if Lin Changan was sitting on a high bike, she would only reach his shoulder.

After hesitating a moment, she reached up and patted his buzz cut.

“If you’re willing to marry me, my parents will be your parents too, and I’ll take care of you!”

She pounded her chest, speaking boldly.

Lin Changan gazed at her and suddenly burst into laughter.

“Sounds good.”

Jiang Yu hadn’t expected that just yesterday Xie Fei fei had declared she wanted Lin Changan as a son-in-law, and today they were already in a relationship.

“What’s with this speed? Have your parents agreed?”

Xie Fei fei had a sweet smile, clearly head over heels.

“My parents agreed to let us date first, saying that if it feels right, we can pick a date to get married.”

The rapid progress was because Xie Jinchang already knew Lin Changan and had a good impression of him.

Huang Ying had heard a lot about the Lin family and thought that if they could get a good son-in-law, as long as he was decent, it would be a good choice.

So they decided to date first.

Jiang Yu didn’t know Lin Changan well, but she suggested, “You might want to put it in writing, just in case someone changes their mind later.”

There are plenty of people who say the kid will take the mother’s surname and then backtrack.

Xie Fei fei’s smile grew even brighter. “He said the same thing! My parents said we can handle it all together when we get married.”

Jiang Yu looked surprised. “I was being overly cautious then.”

“No, I know you’re looking out for me,” Xie Fei fei said, holding her hand, feeling warm inside.

After chatting a bit more, Xie Fei fei suddenly asked, “Have you submitted any articles lately?”

Jiang Yu shook her head. “Didn’t I tell you? I haven’t submitted anything recently.”

“Then it’s strange, I saw an article published under Xiao Jiang’s pen name in the newspaper.”

Xie Fei fei remembered clearly as she had checked the newspaper before leaving.

Huang Ying wasn’t responsible for that section anymore and hadn’t been paying attention.

Jiang Yu frowned. “That’s impossible. I haven’t submitted anything in days.”

Xie Fei fei guessed, “Could someone be using your pen name without permission?”

They agreed to go to the newspaper office to find out.

Upon arriving, Li Ling turned pale at the sight of Jiang Yu and hurriedly tried to leave.

But Xie Fei fei grabbed her by the collar.

“Li Ling, why are you running? You look guilty, are you stealing something?”

Li Ling forced a smile. “Fei fei, you’re joking! I just remembered I had some work left to do, that’s why I’m in a hurry.”

Xie Fei fei narrowed her eyes. “Is that so?”

At that moment, Jiang Yu was starting to suspect because Li Ling was the one who had sent out the exam admission tickets last time.

“Can we find Editor Huang? Can you help call her?” Jiang Yu asked.

Li Ling quickly nodded. “Fei fei, let go, and I’ll go get her for you.”

As soon as Xie Fei fei let go, Li Ling rushed off to find Duan Yuzhen.

If this matter was exposed, she would be implicated as well.

Xie Fei fei noticed the signs and said, “My mom’s office isn’t over there, she must be hiding something.”

She turned and sent someone else to call Huang Ying.
