Chapter 66 : Objects in the City

Jiang Yu was filled with anticipation as she nodded.

“Alright.”

He Tingyue, receiving her response, felt a wave of warmth rush through him, as if his blood was boiling.

His gaze was intense, carrying a heat that seemed capable of melting Jiang Yu.

He looked away, swallowing hard.

Just wait a bit longer, they would talk about this after the wedding.

The bus swayed all the way, finally arriving at Funan Commune.

Although Jiang Yu had taken many bus rides before, she still felt nauseous and struggled to hold it in.

Thinking she would have to walk back from the commune, she was surprised when He Tingyue revealed he had borrowed a bicycle from somewhere.

“Get on.”

The crowd in Nan He Village was bustling with familiar faces. This time, He Tingyue didn’t let her sit in the front but placed the luggage there instead.

As soon as they reached the village entrance, someone recognized Jiang Yu.

“Hey, isn’t that Jiang Yu from the old Jiang family? Is that you, Jiang Yu? You’ve been to the city and I barely recognized you!”

He Tingyue stopped the bike and turned back.

Jiang Yu nodded and got off the bike.

“Let’s walk back.”

Otherwise, they’d be stopped along the way with too many greetings and it would be too troublesome.

“Aunt Du, it’s Jiang Yu. I’m back today.”

Aunt Du was Wang Yunshan’s mother.

Jiang Yu didn’t particularly like her, but she never showed it, worried about causing trouble for Wang Yunshan.

Aunt Du’s eyes darted back and forth, sizing up Jiang Yu and then glancing at He Tingyue.

It wasn’t that she was not curious; it was just that He Tingyue’s presence was so strong that it intimidated her.

“This is…”

Jiang Yu introduced confidently, “This is my boyfriend, He Tingyue.”

Aunt Du’s mouth dropped open in surprise.

“A boyfriend?!” she exclaimed, nearly screeching.

“Where is he from? Did you bring him back from the city? What unit does he work for?”

With He Tingyue’s looks and demeanor, she wouldn’t believe he wasn’t from the city.

Jiang Yu looked up at He Tingyue, prompting him to speak.

He Tingyue replied, “Aunt, I work at the National Cotton Mill No. 2.”

Aunt Du gasped again.

It was no wonder, the National Cotton Mill No. 2 was quite famous.

In all of North City, if there were two units everyone wanted to work for, it was the steel mill and the cotton mill, both prestigious jobs with a lot of face.

“Aunt, we can talk later. I need to get home first,” Jiang Yu said, eager to move on, pulling He Tingyue along.

Aunt Du was left standing on the roadside, muttering, “The old Jiang family must have burned a lot of incense! They’ve got a pair of twins, and both have married into the city!”

She thought about her own daughter, who had picked a limp man and ended up in misery.

Not only was he a cripple, but he was also foolish, he had only recently regained his senses.

Of course, Jiang Yu was unaware of all this.

The road home, which should have been short, felt particularly long today.

After just a few steps, she felt the need to reintroduce He Tingyue, wishing she could label him to save herself the trouble.

“Are you regretting it? My mouth is almost dry,” Jiang Yu said, though she couldn’t help but smile.

He Tingyue laughed, “No regrets, it’s a pleasure.”

He felt a sense of validation, every time Jiang Yu introduced him, he felt happier.

This trip had not been in vain.

By the time they reached the Jiang family home, Wang Meili was in shock, unable to regain her composure.

It was Jiang Yu’s uncle, Jiang Yongguo, who reminded her, “Old San’s girl, Jiang Yu brought her boyfriend home! Hurry and let him in!”

Wang Meili finally snapped back to reality, and a wave of joy washed over her.

Her daughter, Jiang Yu, had really brought back a city boyfriend!

“Hey! Hey! Come in, watch the steps, walk slowly!”

Jiang Yu asked, “Mom, where’s Dad?”

Wang Meili suddenly remembered that Jiang Yonghua wasn’t home and quickly shouted, “Jiang Ye, go to the field and call your third uncle back!”

Jiang Ye was Jiang Yongguo’s youngest son, the same age as Jiang Hao, but with a completely different personality, skinny and quiet.

He didn’t respond and ran straight to the fields.

Jiang Yu glanced at him, Jiang Ye was always like that, reserved and not fond of talking.

The siblings didn’t interact much, she wasn’t close to any of her cousins in the Jiang family.

With others, it was due to past conflicts, with Jiang Ye, it was simply a lack of contact.

“What are you looking at?” He Tingyue asked.

Jiang Yu shook her head. “Let’s go inside.”

Wang Meili was glowing with happiness, Jiang Yu’s actions not only surprised her but also gave her a sense of pride.

She had never imagined she would be so fortunate as to marry both her daughters to city men.

Before long, Jiang Xin returned.

“Elder sister! Elder sister!” she yelled, running as if in a sprint.

Having not seen her for a while, Jiang Yu missed her and caught Jiang Xin in a hug.

“How have you been lately?”

Jiang Xin nodded. “Good. Mom hasn’t hit me.”

Perhaps because Jiang Yu and Jiang Ting were not home, Wang Meili was unexpectedly kind to her only daughter.

During this time, Jiang Xin not only avoided being hit but also enjoyed the peach pastries and peanuts Wang Meili brought back from the city.

“You’re not asking for much,” Jiang Yu said, poking her head. “You’ll sleep with me tonight. I brought you something good.”

Jiang Xin remained beside her, turning to look at He Tingyue.

“Is this my brother-in-law?”

The word “brother-in-law” made He Tingyue feel delighted, as if he could give her a big red envelope on the spot.

But Jiang Yu had told him before they came not to flaunt wealth or bring gifts.

It was just a visit to her home, a cup of tea and then leave, there was no need to be overly enthusiastic with her parents.

If possible, Jiang Yu even hoped he would be a bit aloof.

However, He Tingyue couldn’t hold back and smiled, gently patting Jiang Xin’s head.

“Next time, brother-in-law will bring you gifts.”

Jiang Xin chirped, “Thank you, brother-in-law!”

Jiang Yu playfully scolded, “Little brown-noser.”

Jiang Xin was younger, a bit darker than Jiang Yu, but her big, bright apricot eyes bore a resemblance to Jiang Yu, hinting that she could be a little beauty.

Faced with this “little Jiang Yu,” He Tingyue found it hard to maintain a stern demeanor due to the girl’s sweet words.

Before long, Jiang Yonghua and Jiang Hao hurried back, followed by Jiang Yu’s second uncle’s family.

Today, the entire Jiang family had gathered.

Jiang Yonghua’s face showed joy, though he was much more composed than Wang Meili, extending his hand toward He Tingyue.

“Little He, right? I’m Jiang Yu’s father.”

He Tingyue shook his hand. “He Tingyue.”

Jiang Yonghua noticed the thick calluses on his palms and his gaze flickered.

He had a feeling that Jiang Yu’s boyfriend was not an ordinary person.

“Meili, why haven’t you made some sweet water? How can we let Little He stand here?”

Wang Meili smacked her forehead, her smile broadening.

“Look at me! I was so caught up in happiness! I’ll go right now!”

Jiang Yu interjected, “Mom, I want some too.”

Wang Meili, surprisingly, didn’t scold her, quickly replying, “Of course, I’ll make you a cup too.”

But she didn’t mention making one for Jiang Hao, which made him quite unhappy.

Earlier, when Du Juan came by, they hadn’t been this enthusiastic.
