From Fiancée to Slum : A Tale of Loss Chapter 76

Chapter 76 : Who doesn’t spank their children?

Jiang Ye kept silent, but he understood deep down that Jiang Yu was about to get married soon. She could protect him for a moment, but not for a lifetime.

He had gone to get his wounds treated today, and when he returned home, Yang Cuilan would beat him as usual.

Could he really never go home for the rest of his life?

As he gazed at the sunset in the distance, he felt nothing but endless loneliness.

If only he could truly never go home again.

“Jiang Ye, let’s go find the captain,” Jiang Yu said.

The captain’s wife was the women’s director, and she was the best at dealing with family matters.

Every family had its issues with children, but no one beat their kids like Yang Cuilan did.

“Jiang Yu, don’t worry about me,” he replied.

He didn’t want to go, no one could meddle in his affairs.

At that moment, Jiang Yu felt a sudden tightness in her heart, as if someone had gripped her heart tightly.

“If I hadn’t seen it today, I wouldn’t have gotten involved,” she said.

She took Jiang Ye’s hand and headed straight for the captain’s house.

When they arrived, the captain and his family were just having dinner.

Since learning about He Tingyue’s identity, the captain had been more courteous to Jiang Yu and invited her to sit down for a meal.

“Since there’s Uncle He here, I won’t sit down. I wouldn’t disturb you if it weren’t urgent, I’m here to see Aunt Liu,” she said.

Aunt Liu, He Youfu’s wife, had come from the same village as Wang Meili, and they had never gotten along well even before they were married.

But she envied Wang Meili for having a pair of twins, and Jiang Yu had snacked at her house many times as a child.

She quickly noticed Jiang Ye standing at the door, a bandage on his forehead and his bare skin marred with bruises and cuts.

“Isn’t this Jiang Ye? Did you get into a fight?” she asked.

Jiang Yu sighed, “Aunt Liu, you know Jiang Ye’s temperament. He’s always quiet and keeps things to himself. He wouldn’t fight with anyone, these injuries are all from my aunt.”

Upon hearing this, Liu Junmei was initially shocked but soon calmed down.

It was no secret in Nanghe Village that Yang Cuilan treated Jiang Ye poorly.

But because Jiang Ye was so inconspicuous, no one paid much attention.

When other kids got hit, they would scream loud enough for the whole village to hear.

But Jiang Ye was different, no matter how much it hurt, he would grit his teeth and stay silent.

The saying “The crying child gets the candy” wasn’t without reason.

Liu Junmei sighed, “I knew your mother would scold you, but I didn’t realize she was so harsh. If you had come to me earlier, I would have helped you.”

“Let’s go to your house right now! You, Youfu, don’t eat go find Jiang Yongguo and talk to him! If he didn’t want to raise the child, he shouldn’t have had him in the first place! Since he’s born, even if they can’t provide a good life, they shouldn’t treat him like a punching bag!”

He Youfu sighed, “Fine, I’ll go.”

With that, Liu Junmei followed Jiang Yu and Jiang Ye to find Yang Cuilan.

As they walked, Jiang Yu had the feeling that Liu Junmei was studying Jiang Ye, as if trying to confirm something. She muttered a few words under her breath that Jiang Yu couldn’t catch.

As they arrived, they saw Jiang Ye’s figure, but Yang Cuilan was quicker than her words.

Not caring that she was holding a hatchet, she threw it at him.

“You still know how to come back! You didn’t even chop the wood before running off!”

Liu Junmei shouted, “Get out of the way!”

Jiang Ye froze for a moment, slightly turned, and the back of his arm was struck by the blade.

“Jiang Ye!” Jiang Yu finally reacted, realizing the hatchet was right in front of them.

Although the back of the blade wasn’t sharp, it hit hard, causing Jiang Ye to grunt in pain, his lips turning pale from the hurt.

Now even He Youfu couldn’t keep his composure.

He pushed past Liu Junmei and yelled, “Yang Cuilan! What do you think you’re doing? Trying to kill someone?”

It was dark now, and Yang Cuilan hadn’t seen anyone else, she thought it was just Jiang Ye returning.

He Youfu’s loud shout also brought Jiang Yongguo out.

“Youfu, why are you here at this hour? Come in, let’s have a drink!” Jiang Yongguo said.

“Drink my ass!” He Youfu’s round belly shook with anger.

“If you didn’t want to raise this child, you shouldn’t have had him! Now that you’ve had him, he’s not just your servant, he shouldn’t be your punching bag!”

He Youfu angrily picked up the hatchet on the ground, “Jiang Yongguo, what is this? This is a hatchet! If this thing hits you on the head, you won’t be able to die even if you have nine lives! My wife was walking in front of me, and Yang Cuilan threw the hatchet at me without saying a word. What is she trying to do? Are you trying to kill someone?”

Yang Cuilan was terrified and tried to defend herself “No, no, I didn’t see Sister Liu, I thought it was only Jiang Ye!”

Old Lady Wang and her family from next door came out and joined in the discussion.

“Youfu, why are you taking it so seriously? Cuilan didn’t do it on purpose, isn’t it okay?”

Liu Junmei spat and spit all over Old Lady Wang’s face.

“Wait until something happens to me before you tell me, is it too late? I’m already lying on the ground, what else can I say? Can she compensate me for my life? Aunt Wang, if you are so generous, take out your family’s money and use it to help us villagers. Don’t just talk without any consideration, you are annoying people at your age!”

Old Lady Wang muttered, “But Cuilan didn’t want to beat you, she wanted to beat her child. Who wouldn’t beat their child?”

Liu Junmei sneered, “You beat your child with a hatchet? You beat your child so hard that he was bleeding? Since everyone is here, come and see what Yang Cuilan has done to Jiang Ye!”

It was dark now and we couldn’t see clearly from a distance, so we all walked forward.

The first thing he saw was the wound on his forehead, and then Jiang Yu lifted up his clothes.

The various new and old wounds on his body piled up together, looking very scary.

Jiang Yu turned his face away reluctantly, “If I hadn’t happened to come here today, I wouldn’t have known that Jiang Ye was beaten so badly! To be honest, the second strongest man in our village didn’t have such a miserable life as Jiang Ye! There was such a big cut on his head, and it was all bloody, but my aunt pretended not to see it and still ordered him to work.”

Erqiang is an orphan who lost his parents at a very young age. He was adopted and raised by people from all walks of life.

Some people thought Jiang Yu was making a fuss and said dissatisfiedly “Every family doesn’t beat their children. Is it worth calling the team leader over?”

Liu Junmei looked over with stern eyes, “Uncle, do you beat your child like this too? Then bring your child here. If he doesn’t have injuries like Jiang Ye, then you can beat him up in front of me, just like Jiang Ye did!”

The man said awkwardly “My child is well behaved and has done nothing wrong, so why does he need to be beaten?”

“Okay!” Liu Junmei sneered, “Then let’s figure out why Yang Cuilan beat Jiang Ye to death. Yang Cuilan, you speak first, I’ll give you a chance!”

Yang Cuilan looked at Jiang Yongguo in panic, looking at a loss.

This isn’t the first time she’s been with Jiang Ye, and no one has ever stood up for him before.

“This, this…what’s there to say? The child I hit wasn’t someone else’s. It was my own child. How can I not hit him? Why are you guys meddling in other people’s business?”
