Chapter 94 : Not to mention you two are a burden
“Okay, okay, everyone, stop standing here! We need to go to Dongke Lai!” He Feiyan called out.
Everyone rushed out, eager to have a drink.
Once they left, the room finally became quiet, and Jiang Yu sighed in relief.
“It’s exhausting.”
With so many people coming, she couldn’t even remember their faces, and she had to keep smiling, her face almost stiff from it.
He Feiyan smiled and said, “Sister-in-law, my brother is already waiting at the door. Let’s go to Dongke Lai first.”
“Alright.”
“Zhengdong, Lilan, what are you two doing standing outside? Come in and greet your sister-in-law!”
As soon as she raised her voice, He Zhengdong and He Lilan ran in.
In front of Jiang Yu, they seemed a bit shy.
Knowing that He Tingyue was getting married made them quite nervous.
This was because Xu Lihua had said several times in front of them, “When your new sister-in-law comes home, you two little burdens will be kicked out.”
“No new daughter-in-law wants to deal with burdens. You’re not real members of the He family, you’ll have to go back where you came from.”
“Just wait! Your grandparents will be here soon to take you back to your hometown!”
So much so that they tossed and turned at night, fearing they would be sent away.
Jiang Yu smiled and took out two red envelopes, handing them over.
“Zhengdong, Lilan, this is my gift for you.”
He Zhengdong and He Lilan looked at each other, neither extending their hands.
Until He Feiyan spoke up, “What are you standing there for? Call her sister-in-law now!”
He Lilan asked, “Sister, do you have one too?”
“Yes, we all have one.”
Only then did they accept the envelopes and quietly called out “sister-in-law.”
Seeing this, Jiang Yu thought it was just their shyness from meeting her for the first time.
“Let’s go, let’s head to Dongke Lai together,” Jiang Yu said gently.
However, the siblings ignored her and dashed outside.
“Hey! You two…” He Feiyan wanted to call them back but was stopped by Jiang Yu.
“Let them go.”
The way people interact depends on their temperament, character, and fate.
She wouldn’t force the two kids to like her, she would fulfill her role as the eldest sister-in-law and hope they could coexist peacefully.
The group arrived at the big restaurant, all marveling at He Tingyue’s generosity.
It was truly worth coming to Dongke Lai for a meal!
Jiang Yu followed He Tingyue, toasting to everyone from the leadership of the Second Factory, colleagues, and good friends.
Thanks to He Tingyue’s support, Jiang Yu barely drank any alcohol.
He Tingyue seemed to be able to drink a thousand cups without getting drunk, going glass after glass without his face reddening, looking completely normal.
While they were eating, He Feiyan whispered in her ear, “My brother doesn’t show signs of intoxication, but you can’t tell when he’s drunk.”
“Really?” Jiang Yu looked over but couldn’t see any signs of drunkenness at all.
It wasn’t until the banquet ended and everyone had left that He Tingyue swayed slightly, as if he might fall over.
“Sister-in-law, help my brother get home to rest. I’ll handle things here at Dongke.”
The banquet was only at noon, so she didn’t need to help clean up, but she had to settle the bill with the restaurant.
Jiang Yu agreed and helped He Tingyue back home.
After the guests left and the house fell silent again, she had a moment to look around her new home.
The room was spacious, besides the bed, there was a desk by the window.
It was clear that the desk and wardrobe were newly made. There was also a chest of drawers near the door with a vase of flowers on it.
The curtains were newly made as well, featuring small blue flowers, and the windows had bright red wedding characters.
Unlike in the countryside, there were no kangs here, they slept on beds and in winter, they could burn coal stoves.
He Tingyue was sleeping soundly, so Jiang Yu took a moment to explore the room.
The main room was divided into two areas, functioning as a living room and a dining room.
There were three more rooms: one for He Feiyan and He Lilan, and a smaller one for He Zhengdong, all of which offered good privacy.
Just as Jiang Yu was thinking about organizing her things, she noticed Wang Meili and Jiang Yonghua sneaking into the yard like thieves.
The two went straight to Jiang Yu’s bicycle. If it hadn’t been locked, they would probably have ridden away.
Jiang Yu set down what she was holding and walked outside.
“Dad, Mom, why haven’t you gone home yet?”
Wang Meili rubbed her hands together and smiled warmly.
“Jiang Yu, you won’t need this bicycle in the city. I’ll borrow it for a few days and return it later.”
Jiang Yu’s expression turned cold. “No, this bicycle was given to me by my aunt. She told me before she gave it to me that I can’t lend it to you.”
Wang Meili was taken aback. “Why can’t you give it to us? We’re your biological parents!”
Jiang Yu shrugged. “Then you can tell to aunt. It’s no use telling me. By the way, there are still dishes at the restaurant. I told you to pack them up. Did you?”
Wang Meili immediately changed the subject. “Are there more dishes? I didn’t even know! Oh no, we can’t leave those behind, it would be unfair to the restaurant! We all paid for it, so why should we let them keep it? Yonghua, let’s hurry and pack the dishes to take home for Jiang Hao to try.”
Once the two were gone, Jiang Yu felt relieved and slumped down in a chair.
Little did she know that someone was watching her from outside the yard.
“Did you see that? She can be so cruel to her own parents, imagine how she’ll treat you two burdens!”
He Zhengdong pressed his lips together tightly, recalling the days he spent hungry and cold in the countryside, even getting beaten for working hard.
He was a boy and could still sit at the table to eat in his hometown, but he’d get slapped on the palm for eating even one extra bite of rice.
But He Lilan wasn’t even allowed to sit at the table.
She had to help with farm work, do house chores when she got home, and ultimately eat squatting in front of the stove.
They didn’t want to return to those dark days.
He Lilan asked, “Aunt Xu, what should we do?”
Xu Lihua glared at her. “Just make a fuss.”
The siblings listened intently. “What kind of fuss?”
“Be proactive and let everyone know that Jiang Yu is mistreating the families of martyrs and doesn’t want to support you. When the factory leaders find out, they definitely won’t ignore it and will criticize her,” Xu Lihua explained clearly.
He Zhengdong frowned. “But she hasn’t shown that she dislikes us. Is she acting? Even if we want to make a scene, she has to treat us poorly first, right?”
Xu Lihua sneered and pushed his forehead.
“What a fool! Just act a little naughty and make her unhappy with you. If she’s unhappy, she’ll definitely mistreat you. Then you can create a scene with a clear conscience. I’ve taught you all the methods, it’s up to you to decide how to act.”
Xu Lihua got up and went home.
He Zhengdong and He Lilan were left looking at each other in confusion.
“Brother, do you think Aunt Xu is right?”
He Zhengdong shook his head. “I’m not sure. I think so.”
“What should we do then? Big brother won’t beat us, right?”
He Zhengdong hadn’t figured it out yet, he planned to wait and see.
