Chapter 028: Books

Yun Xi examined the descriptions of each bookstore.

The [Useful Bookstore] catered to the general public and sold mostly basic books.

The [Official Bookstore] claimed to have the largest and most complete collection of books in Qinglan Town. Since it was run by the authorities, its credibility was very high.

The [Scholar-Exclusive Bookstore] was more unique—it was run by a spellcaster with a scholar sub-profession, specializing in books related to scholar learning and certification.

It was widely known that in the Divinefall Continent, knowledge was the most precious form of wealth, so Yun Xi decided to visit all three bookstores to gain a comprehensive understanding of the civilization and knowledge level of the Jade Plains.

She started with the [Useful Bookstore]

  • Basic Common Script of the Jade Plains
  • Introduction to the Jade Plains
  • A Millennium of History and Civilization in Qinglan Town
  • Modern History of Qinglan Town
  • Common Medicinal and Culinary Herbs of the Jade Plains
  • Common Rare Natural Treasures of the Jade Plains
  • Common Aberrations of the Jade Plains

Just as advertised, these were all introductory-level books.

The prices weren’t too steep, ranging from a few silver coins to a few hundred.

Yun Xi was surprised that knowledge in Qinglan Town wasn’t as outrageously expensive as she expected. In her previous life, the cheapest knowledge book in her starting region had cost at least one gold coin.

Besides these ordinary books, there were also spiritual books made from special spirit-infused paper:

  • Warrior: How to Efficiently Enhance Physical Strength
[Price: 78 gold coins] [Remaining: 13]
  • Intermediate Combat Technique: Sky-Leap Skill
[Price: 130 gold coins] [Remaining: 1]
  • Spellcaster: How to Improve Spiritual Power Control
[Price: 200 gold coins] [Remaining: 12]
  • Spellcaster Career Transition Key Points
[Price: 360 gold coins] [Remaining: 6]
  • Chef: How to Train Your Cooking Skills
[Price: 30 gold coins] [Remaining: 12]
  • Apothecary: One Book to Successfully Change Professions
[Price: 100 gold coins] [Remaining: 16]
  • Recipe: How to Cook Geda Fruit
[Price: 20 gold coins] [Remaining: 102]
  • Recipe: How to Make Coarse Wheat Biscuits
[Price: 30 gold coins] [Remaining: 120]
  • Formula #628: Blood-Replenishing Potion
[Price: 233 gold coins] [Remaining: 6]
  • Formula #268: Blood-Replenishing Potion
[Price: 326 gold coins] [Remaining: 10]

No doubt about it—on the Divinefall Continent, bookstores were like luxury shops in another world, far beyond what ordinary people could afford.

Books related to professions were even more exclusively high-end. Unlike normal books, they were printed on spirit-infused paper and were all single-use spiritual books, with strict protections to ensure the accuracy and exclusivity of the knowledge inside:

  • “100% Authentic”: the content was guaranteed to be real.
  • “Burns After Reading”: after reading, the knowledge would transfer directly into the reader’s mind, and the book would self-destruct.
  • “Patent Contract”: the reader could not resell or profit from the content, or they would automatically breach the contract.

However, these contracts did not restrict other activities.

For example, if you bought a potion formula, you couldn’t sell its contents, but you could use it to make and sell potions or teach it to your apprentice for free. That wouldn’t violate the formula’s patent rights.

Books sold by the official bookstore were either on consignment with royalties going to the original authors, or purchased outright from them and then resold.

Even though these books were expensive and could only be bought with gold coins, in Yun Xi’s previous life, formulas like these could only be bought with crystal stones.

She skipped the ones related to warriors and spellcasters and purchased both Formula #628 and #268 for blood-replenishing potions.

While she had collected her own formulas back on Blue Star, the 628 and 268 formulas were more common in the Divinefall Continent, and the ingredients were easier to find—even pre-processed versions could be bought at herbal shops, which would make it easier to practice as an apothecary.

In addition, Yun Xi bought:

  • Basic Script of the Jade Plains
  • Introduction to the Jade Plains
  • Common Medicinal and Culinary Herbs of the Jade Plains
  • Common Rare Natural Treasures of the Jade Plains
  • Common Aberrations of the Jade Plains

The most important was Basic Script of the Jade Plains.

Why? Because all of these books were written in the Jade Plains’ native script—and without help from the staff, Yun Xi couldn’t even read the book titles.

In the Divinefall Continent, the system only translated basic verbal communication between players and locals. For written language, you had to learn it yourself.

Next, Yun Xi went to the [Qinglan Town Official Bookstore].

The store was huge. In addition to books in the Jade Plains native language, it also carried books in many other languages.

Yun Xi was most interested in local recipes and formulas.

  • Recipe: White Mushroom Cooking Encyclopedia (36 Volumes)
[Price: 30 gold coins] [Available individually at 1 gold coin each] [Stock: 160]
  • Recipe: Green Silk Vegetable Cooking Encyclopedia (45 Volumes)
[Price: 40 gold coins] [Available individually at 1 gold coin each] [Stock: 200]

White mushrooms and green silk vegetables were the most common vegetables in Qinglan Town. Yun Xi saw many related recipe books, and for convenience, she bought the full sets.

  • Formula #346: Spirit-Replenishing Potion (No Side Effects)
[Price: 30 green crystal stones] [Stock: 1]
  • Formula #12: Blood-Replenishing Potion (No Side Effects)
[Price: 50 green crystal stones] [Stock: 1]

Yun Xi snapped up both of these side-effect-free formulas immediately. She planned to craft them for her own use once she mastered the skills.

However, unlike the cheaper potions sold in the [Useful Bookstore], these two formulas were so expensive, the combined cost could rival an entire house on Feilan Street.

Lastly, Yun Xi found something surprising: a spell rune scroll.

  • Low-Level Wood Growth Spell – Rune Scroll
[Price: 1,000 gold coins or 900 white crystal stones] [Stock: 1]

This type of scroll, like spiritual books, was also single-use with “burns after reading,” “100% authentic,” and “patent contract” protections.

But before Yun Xi could make the purchase, a clerk informed her that someone had just bought it a moment earlier.

Yun Xi… regretted looking at it just a second too late.

She flipped through the contents of her inherited spell crystal, and realized that she actually already had the rune pattern for the Low-Level Wood Growth Spell.

The issue, however, was that if she had bought the scroll, she would have full usage rights—aside from the restriction of not violating the patent contract, she’d be able to freely teach it to others once she learned it.

Now that chance was gone.
