Chapter 048: Killing the Eerie
Could it be the mark from the enemy who destroyed her clan?
Had He already found her?
In an instant, countless thoughts flashed through Yun Xi’s mind.
“What do you mean?” After a long silence, she finally heard her own hoarse voice.
“The mark on your body will help you complete the mission.”
“You know what kind of mark it is?” Yun Xi asked again.
Yu Nanfēi shook his head.
“But I do know how to remove it—if you ever need that.”
Yun Xi considered this carefully.
Being marked meant the owner of the mark could locate her at any time. It was like carrying a ticking time bomb.
No matter who had marked her, the best course was to have it removed.
“Yu Nanfēi, I do need it. I want to get rid of it.” Yun Xi didn’t explain further.
“Alright then. Do your best to complete that mission. When I regain my freedom, I’ll tell you how to remove the mark.”
“Okay.”
Even though there was no official mission prompt, Yun Xi knew—she had just accepted Yu Nanfēi’s personal task.
At that moment, she realized that the mission’s importance wasn’t just about the extraordinary rewards.
It now involved Yu Nanfēi’s freedom—and her own mark.
The conversation ended, and Yun Xi didn’t stay longer.
Of course, despite the slight bond forming between the two, the purchase contract still had to be signed.
Yu Nanfēi had to guarantee that the Information Extraction earring had been crafted by him personally and would have no negative side effects on Yun Xi.
Faced with Yun Xi’s caution, Yu Nanfēi signed the contract with no objections. The whole process went smoothly.
After leaving the enchanted jewelry shop, Yun Xi made her way outside town. Two months later, she once again came to the outskirts of Qinglan Town.
At this moment, a light rain was falling.
This drizzle had already lasted for half a month.
Holding an oiled paper umbrella from a general store, Yun Xi walked while carefully observing her surroundings.
Perhaps due to the rain, there were very few people on the outskirts today. Only a handful of patrol squad members remained, dutifully stationed at their posts.
Just then, a seductive-looking woman with a patrol badge at her waist approached from the front, her expression serious.
“Young lady, the weather’s bad today. Why are you out here?”
Her sharp eyes scanned Yun Xi from head to toe, and she held a rune between her fingers, clearly ready for anything.
“I’m out here to level up,” Yun Xi answered, unfazed by the woman’s vigilance.
In Qinglan Town, it was rare for civilians to move around alone—especially on rainy days. Patrol members often checked lone wanderers to prevent disguised eeries.
In most towns, locals trusted the patrol squads the most.
Take Qinglan Town, for example. Most patrol contracts contained clauses requiring loyalty to the town and dedication to protecting its people.
Even in the wild, ordinary people encountering patrol members could safely seek help from them.
And typically, patrol members earned contribution points for assisting civilians—something they rarely turned down.
Contribution points were directly tied to noble ranks, which spoke for their value.
“You mind if I use this?” the woman asked, shaking the rune in her hand—a common Low-Level Identification Rune.
“This rune won’t work on me—I’m wearing anti-detection equipment,” Yun Xi replied honestly. “But if you’re still uneasy, feel free to try.”
The woman didn’t stop scrutinizing her. After a few seconds, she finally looked away and gave a low grunt.
“Alright, you pass.”
“There’s eerie energy gathering in the Continuous Rain Cave down south. If you’re looking to kill eeries, you can check it out—but be careful.”
Continuous Rain Cave? Yun Xi wasn’t a native, so she had no clue where that was. But she didn’t bother asking.
She knew from experience: as long as she got close, the eerie creatures would find her by scent.
“Got it. I’ll check it out.”
Yun Xi hung the White Crystal Pendant gifted by Yu Nanfēi on her wrist to easily observe any color changes.
She exited Qinglan Town’s southern gate, where the path branched into east, south, and west.
Among them, the southern route showed the darkest color on the white crystal pendant—almost halfway black.
Given the pendant could detect up to Lv10 eerie energy, this meant the area was around Lv5, which was perfect for grinding.
Yun Xi headed south.
The gentle rain patted softly against her umbrella, making a faint crackling sound.
Rain often masked unusual noises.
Normally, rainy days weren’t ideal for fighting monsters, but this drizzle had lasted half a month already, with no end in sight.
There were only two weeks left before the mission began. Yun Xi couldn’t afford to just wait around at home.
Fortunately, she hadn’t put all her free stat points into Spirit. With her Constitution stat now at 19, her five senses were extremely sharp.
Just then, she heard a faint click-clack sound from behind.
If not for her enhanced Constitution, she wouldn’t have noticed it at all.
Yun Xi forced herself to stay still to avoid alarming her stalker, but every muscle in her body was ready to move at any moment.
The next instant, a streak of red shot straight at her from behind.
Yun Xi swiftly sidestepped—and in that same breath, a flash of cold light gleamed from her hand.
When she came back to her senses, a severed red object had already fallen to the ground.
She held her Caution Sword, and a drop of red blood slid down its blade.
“Screeeeech—!”
The screeching cry of her attacker sent chills down Yun Xi’s spine.
She had already turned around to face her enemy.
Before her stood a grotesque giant toad-like eerie, and the severed object on the ground was—its tongue.
The creature turned out to be shockingly fragile. Its primary weapon, its tongue, was sliced clean off. Its HP?
Only 100.
It was a Level 1 eerie.
The battle ended swiftly. Yun Xi’s Constitution stat completely overwhelmed the toad, and she didn’t even need to use a single spell—just her Caution Sword to finish it off.
[Ding! Congratulations, free attribute point +1.]
+10 EXP. Yun Xi leveled up to Lv6.
[Level: 6] [EXP: 0/70]
Leveling up granted:
With the toad as a warm-up, the battles that followed went remarkably smoothly.
Because of the rain, frog-like and toad-like eeries were everywhere—mostly Lv1 to Lv2.
Only one Lv5 eerie appeared, and Yun Xi took it out easily with Immobilization Spell and a few casts of Fireball Spell.
Neither Radiant Ward nor Counterattack Spell were even triggered.
Since the game’s beta began, Yun Xi had spent four solid months training, and she was very satisfied with her progress.
She also realized once again just how critical a good spell was.
Had she only known Water Ball and Water Arrow spells today, that Lv5 eerie might have been her end—or at least she wouldn’t have walked away unscathed.
From Lv1–Lv10, EXP requirements were minimal—just level × 10.
It only took Yun Xi three days to reach Lv10.
But from Lv11 onward, the EXP needed would increase tenfold:
level × 100 per level.
