Chapter 049: Breakthrough

To level up from Lv10 to Lv11, Yun Xi needed 1,100 experience points.

But more than that, breaking through to Lv11 marked the transition from a Low-rank Spellcaster to a Mid-rank Spellcaster.

Her Main Quest #3 was precisely: Break through to Mid-rank Spellcaster.

To complete this breakthrough, she needed to meet several specific conditions.

It was too early to worry about those—first, she had to fill the experience bar for Lv11, which was no small task.

Over the following days, Yun Xi headed out daily to hunt eeries.
Finally, on the tenth day, she gathered the full EXP required for Lv11.

After all, to hunt eeries in the wild, she had to find them first—thankfully, her crystal pendant helped her track down enough.

After days of grinding and leveling, Yun Xi accumulated:

  • 131 free attribute points (10 from leveling + 121 from monster kills)
  • 26 free skill points (5 from leveling + 21 from monster kills)

She already planned her stat allocation:

  • 31 points to Constitution
  • 100 points to Spirit

[Basic Panel]

  • Name: Yun Xi
  • System ID: ******826927
  • Race: Human
  • Age: 20
  • Level: 10
  • EXP: 1100/1100 (Locked)
  • HP: 500/500 (Low-rank Spellcaster HP = Constitution × 10)
  • Mana (Spirit Power): 1420/1420 (Low-rank Spellcaster Mana = Spirit × 10)

[Class Panel]

  • Main Class: Spellcaster
  • Sub-Classes: Cook, Alchemist
  • Free Skill Points: 26

[Attribute Panel]

  • Spirit: 142
  • Constitution: 50
  • Luck: 92 (Max 100 – cannot be increased freely)
  • Charm: 96 (Max 100 – cannot be increased freely)
  • Free Attribute Points: 0

As for the Free Skill Points

The core spellcaster ability, Mana Control, had to be upgraded to Lv10 to qualify for the breakthrough.

Yun Xi allocated the rest based on importance:

Final Skill Point Distribution:

  • [Mana Control Lv10] – Spellcaster-exclusive skill. Enables free control of mana. Control strength scales with Spirit.
  • [Basic Waterball Lv3] – Costs 10–300 mana. Forms a small waterball, dealing 436–726 water-element spell damage (Spirit × skill level + mana spent).
  • [Basic Water Arrow Lv3] – Same as above, but shaped like an arrow.
  • [Basic Radiant Ward Lv5] – Costs 10–500 mana. Forms a glowing aura that grants 720–1210 defense. Can be stacked infinitely. Cooldown: 2 hours.
  • [Basic Identify Lv1] – Costs 10–100 mana. Analyzes the basic stats of living and non-living entities. Success chance scales with Spirit and mana used.
  • [Basic Fireball Lv10] – Costs 10–1000 mana. Creates a small fireball dealing 1430–2420 fire-element spell damage. Deals double damage to eeries.
  • [Basic Healing Lv2] – Costs 10–200 mana. Summons a healing orb restoring 294–484 HP (Spirit × skill level + mana).
  • [Basic Counterspell Lv5] – Costs 10–500 mana. Forms a reflective barrier that returns 720–1210 damage. Can stack infinitely. Cooldown: 4 hours.
  • [Basic Immobilize Lv5] – Costs 10–500 mana. Paralyzes all living targets. Success rate and duration scale with Spirit and mana.

Since Fireball was her main offensive spell against eeries, Yun Xi maxed it first.
Next were defensive and utility spells—Radiant Ward, Counterspell, and Immobilize to Lv5.

She used her last point on Healing Lv2.

Thanks to her high Spirit stat, even her low-leveled Waterball and Water Arrow now dealt substantial damage, making them sufficient as support spells for now.

The moment she upgraded Fireball to Lv10, the system chimed in:

[Ding! Player has met the requirements to advance to Mid-rank Spellcaster. Would you like the system to assist with the breakthrough?]

Note: Breakthrough requires energy equal to Spirit × 100 in mana to succeed.

To advance to Mid-rank Spellcaster, three conditions had to be met:

  1. Mana Control, the class-exclusive skill, must be upgraded to Lv10.
  2. Any other spell, apart from the class-exclusive, must also be Lv10.
  3. As noted by the system, you must supply mana equal to 100 × Spirit to fuel the breakthrough.

This third requirement wasn’t the system being greedy—it was part of the core mechanics for a Spellcaster’s evolution.

Yun Xi’s Spirit was 142, so she needed 14,200 mana to advance.
That equated to 142 white crystal stones, or 1.42 green crystal stones.

This was also one of the major barriers keeping ordinary people from becoming Mid-rank Spellcasters.

Even if someone’s Spirit stat wasn’t as extreme as Yun Xi’s, say in the teens, they’d still need a dozen or so white crystal stones.

For most normal families, that was an unreachable cost.

This was why most talented commoners would either:

  • Join a powerful faction, or
  • Take on a strong mentor to sponsor their training, including the mana stones for breakthroughs.

Of course, reaching Lv11 wasn’t exclusive to spellcasters.

If she chose, Yun Xi could level up using her other professions too.

Whether it was a main class like Warrior, or any type of sub-class, leveling any one profession to mid-rank would trigger the Lv11 upgrade.

Each class had different breakthrough requirements.

For instance, a Warrior’s breakthrough also required two Lv10 class skills, just like a Spellcaster.

But their third requirement was different:
They needed to consume Constitution × 100 worth of healing items—potions or rare materials both worked.

While still expensive, this was cheaper compared to the energy crystal cost for Spellcasters.

However, Warriors did not gain any increase in mana capacity when advancing.
Even as Mid-rank Warriors, their mana cap remained Spirit × 10.
