Frowning, Chen Jing said, “Princess, indeed, River Sun County is a hundred miles away. I’ll send someone to check. With fast horses, they can return within two or three hours.”
Princess Huarong, after hearing Feng Yuanyuan’s story, calmly addressed Chen Jing, “No need to check; it doesn’t matter whether it’s true or false.”
Chen Jing temporarily set aside his suspicions and respectfully inquired, “Then, Princess, how do you plan to deal with this girl?”
Princess Huarong responded, “It’s none of your concern. I want to enjoy the scenery; you may withdraw.”
Chen Jing hesitated but didn’t dare to defy the princess’s wishes. After reminding Wei Yun to be cautious around Feng Yuanyuan, he retreated with his guards into the hidden woods, staying out of the princess’s sight.
Feng Yuanyuan nervously watched the princess in front of her.
Princess Huarong tilted her head, as if concentrating on admiring the clear water of the pool. After a long while, she asked Feng Yuanyuan in a casual tone, “Regarding the dreams, have you told anyone else?”
Feng Yuanyuan replied, “No one else knows, I only told you.”
Princess Huarong said, “Good. This matter is too unusual. Don’t mention it to others in the future.”
Feng Yuanyuan obediently nodded.
Wei Yun, surprised, said, “Princess, do you really believe her? If so, does it mean this child has gained the favor of the lucky star?”
Princess Huarong lightly scoffed, scanning the sky, “Building a roof is enough to gain favor from immortals? In the past, how many emperors of the previous dynasty showed respect to Buddhas, built temples, and cast golden statues? Yet, we never saw Buddha bless them with an everlasting empire for thousands of generations.”
She looked at Feng Yuanyuan and said indifferently, “It’s just a coincidence. She has a connection with me, that’s all.”
Even without the dreams, based on the child’s pitiful background and the opportunity for her to stand before her, Princess Huarong would not have abandoned her in the deep mountains.
“Are you willing to come home with me?”
Princess Huarong looked at Feng Yuanyuan from head to toe and asked in a somewhat indifferent tone.
Feng Yuanyuan had been waiting for this moment for five nights. She eagerly nodded and said, “Willing!”
Princess Huarong remembered something and sighed, “Although I am a princess, my life is not entirely my own. Following me might not lead to a good life.”
Feng Yuanyuan wasn’t afraid at all. Her eyes sparkled as she assured, “Don’t worry, I’m not afraid of hardship!”
Just as she finished speaking, her stomach suddenly growled.
Wei Yun couldn’t help but laugh.
Princess Huarong waved her hand, telling them to go and get something to eat nearby.
“You, this child, meeting a princess is considered your good fortune.”
Since the princess was willing to take in Feng Yuanyuan, Wei Yun didn’t care about dreams or anything else. She sat down with a box of pastries and chatted with Feng Yuanyuan.
Feng Yuanyuan glanced at the princess by the pool, feeling grateful to both the princess and the lucky star.
“Take a look, see which one you like.”
Feng Yuanyuan lowered her head, watching as Wei Yun opened the food box layer by layer. There were three layers in total, each containing exquisite pastries she had never seen before.
Despite her mouth watering, Feng Yuanyuan hesitated to start.
Wei Yun picked a piece of sticky date cake and handed it to her.
Feng Yuanyuan had been well-taught by Grandma Li and maintained her manners, eating delicately even when hungry.
After Feng Yuanyuan finished eating, Wei Yun handed the food box to the maid who accompanied them and sat back down beside her.
Feng Yuanyuan whispered, “Why don’t you go attend to the princess?”
Wei Yun smiled wryly and whispered back, “The princess likes quietness; she doesn’t like us hovering around her all the time.”
Feng Yuanyuan quickly took note of this.
Wei Yun thought for a moment and asked, “Do you know about the Zhen Nan Prince’s Residence?”
Feng Yuanyuan shook her head. At the age of seven, she had been raised by Grandma Li and had been surrounded by neighborhood trivia. Though storytellers at tea houses mentioned some noble figures, they never discussed someone like the Zhen Nan Prince.
Children her age couldn’t possibly understand, and storytellers were afraid of trouble, so they avoided talking about influential figures of the current dynasty.
Pointing towards the main peak of the Cangshan Mountains in the distance, Wei Yun explained, “This is Cangshan. Once you cross over Cangshan, you’ll reach the city of Ningzhou.”
“In Ningzhou, there is a residence called the Zhen Nan Prince’s Residence, a title given by the ancestors of the current dynasty.”
“The current Zhen Nan Prince is named Zhou Wen, and he is also the husband of our princess.”
Wei Yun sighed softly, “Remembering these is enough. When you arrive at the mansion, don’t inquire about anything else randomly.”
Feng Yuanyuan readily agreed. Seeing that Wei Yun had no further instructions, she started memorizing these pieces of information repeatedly.
Wei Yun looked at her princess with a heart full of pity.
Seven years ago, when the enemy invaded the northern border, the two major princes from different surnames plotted rebellion. The old Zhen Nan Prince of Ningzhou also harbored rebellious intentions.
To stabilize the old Zhen Nan Prince, the emperor offered lavish conditions to coax him. However, the old Zhen Nan Prince, who had rebellious intentions, didn’t want to bear the infamy of being a traitor openly. Therefore, he deliberately made an absurd request to the emperor, thinking it would never be agreed upon. He asked the emperor to marry his beloved daughter, Princess Huarong, to the heir of the Zhen Nan Prince’s Residence, Zhou Wen.
Surprisingly, the emperor agreed and sent Princess Huarong to the Zhen Nan Prince’s Residence.
This move temporarily restrained the old Zhen Nan Prince from rebelling, but it made the princess the talk of the entire nation.
