In the secretary’s office, just a wall away from the mayor’s office.
“Yes… that’s the place, it has been leaking since yesterday…”
Millie, holding a coffee, spoke with a calm tone, even she was surprised by the steadiness of her hands, unnervingly so.
Peter, with his toolbox, stood on a chair and looked around: “It’s a leaking pipe, ma’am, and it seems to have cracked due to an external force—”
Suddenly, a loud ‘bang’ came from next door.
Both fell silent for a moment, and then Millie said, “Okay, can you fix it for me? I remember we agreed on it online last night…”
So you just arranged online for the engineering team to fix a leaky pipe, why did you have to speak with such a suggestive tone!
However, Peter was only a “temp worker” and wasn’t sure if this was actually the case, especially since he didn’t really have professional skills in plumbing, he could only explain with his layman’s knowledge: “I don’t have enough tools with me, I can only temporarily patch up the cracked part with tape—”
“Crack”, amid the heavy thumping from next door, the sound of something shattering was unmistakably clear.
Silence fell again.
Millie explained, “It seems like your colleagues are quite clumsy, they’ve probably broken the previous mayor’s favorite collection.”
“Is… is that so?” Peter, the current Spider-Man, hesitated for a moment, then said, “Could you hand me a nut, please?”
Millie handed it to him, and with a ‘bang’, her hand shook.
This time it was a clear gunshot, obviously heard by both.
Under Peter’s gaze, she slowly raised her head and said emotionlessly to Peter, “Wow, looks like they are working while watching a movie…”
Peter: “……”
He jumped down from the chair, waving his hands and backing away, “Ah, sorry, I think I need to use the restroom, don’t worry, I won’t be watching movies in there so it won’t take too long—look out the window, what’s that?”
“What?” Millie instinctively turned her head while looking for cover, but there was nothing outside the window. She heard the door open, and when she turned back, the boy was gone.
“Damn…” she muttered.
“Dan…” The secretary’s office was not too far from the mayor’s office. Peter looked around and then jumped directly into the mayor’s office through the hole high up. He saw a mess inside, with bodies lying everywhere.
There were those dressed in security uniforms, as well as colleagues he had seen in the engineering vehicle. Bullet holes and bloodstains marked the walls. He shouted, “Is anyone there?” “Is anyone still alive?” but no response came.
“Just a wall away from me,” he thought, “people have died.”
Walking on the floor, an unknown impulse engulfed Peter, making him want to do something, do something…
·[Temporary Worker (Gotham Academy Student)]·
He picked up a brick from the ground, dazed, wait, shouldn’t he be chasing the murderer?
Resisting the strange urge within, he noticed the only real exit in the sealed office was the window in the rest area. Following the blood trail from the window, brick in hand, Peter chased after it.
Shortly after Peter left, Vivi entered the room, by then the [Assassin] had already escaped.
She was there to collect her own body. The bathroom was in terrible shape, fortunately, the body was in the bathtub at the end. Only the study was relatively intact, so she moved her body there— and the [Assassin] who escaped, was actually still within Vivi’s sight.
Her attention had been on the [Assassin] since the fight started, he was the one she really wanted to eliminate.
The mayor couldn’t stay indoors forever. However, the chaos ended faster than she expected, and the assassin’s skills exceeded her expectations—but no matter how he fled, Vivi had the map.
And…
A city hall security team without any red names.
Hey, since she could pinpoint the enemy’s location, why bother doing it herself?
When a bullet hit the grass half a meter in front of her, Deadshot knew he was in trouble. Honestly, the shooting was quite ordinary; if he had enough bullets, he was confident he could take out an entire security team.
But he couldn’t possibly bring an armory to city hall, and the firearms he had brought in a toolbox were already used up in the fight.
“Drop your weapon—”
“Alright,” he squinted, searching for the person who appeared ahead, not finding his target Anna Alek, he slowly put down his weapon and then raised his hands, “I admit, I’ve been caught this time.”
“…I surrender, ma’am.”
Everything ended faster than expected.
The logistics brought medical personnel, and the mayor, having nothing to do, allowed Vivi to intercept the returning underage temp worker, who was still holding a brick.
And the “Spider-Man who was warned not to run around halfway” didn’t expect to turn around and see the mayor, which made him freeze.
This is the mayor of this city… oh my god, what did he do in city hall last night?
“Wow, you,” Vivi nodded slowly to Peter, saying under his nervous gaze, “Nice hairstyle.”
Curly hair is quite cute.
“…Thank you, no, wait, everyone’s dead, in the office—” Regardless of what happened last night, he thought he must inform her of the office’s current dire state.
“Just a typical shootout,” the blonde lady tilted her head slightly as if she saw something, “Not everyone, six people are still breathing.”
They had already been taken away by the medical staff.
She turned her head back to glance at the brick in Peter’s hand: “You…”
Her voice suddenly stopped.
The engineering team employed was already part of the city hall, and she could open the personal panel of the temporary worker with a green name in front of her.
[Immense Strength][Astonishing Speed][Resilient Will][High Intelligence][Kindness]…
Vivi’s gaze grew increasingly complex.
This kid… maybe he could carry bricks for five people by himself.
Her originally indifferent tone immediately became gentle: “Come with me, don’t be afraid, you know this is Gotham, so accidents always happen… You’re a temp worker, right? Working part-time, what’s your name?”
Recalling Millie’s behavior earlier, Peter cautiously said: “Peter, Peter Parker… So, what kind of accident?”
“A killer and gangsters disguised as construction workers tried to sneak in, but they encountered security personnel catching a mischievous snake that might have crawled into the office. It was such a coincidence, so impulsive people had a bit of conflict and misunderstanding, and an accident happened.”
Peter fell silent for a moment.
“So… those guards…”
“Ah, they will enter… no, receive compensation.” Vivi looked straight ahead, quickly correcting herself.
【You can allocate funds from public funds for compensation to the guards.】
【5 dead guards, 6 injured, 3 dead thugs, 1 injured】
【In total, the compensation limit is 80,000 gold coins (1,000 for each deceased, 500 for each injured, no compensation for thugs)】
Vivi thought of something. They were already at the office door, but she wasn’t concerned about the boy beside her. Instead, she carefully adjusted the allocation amount to the maximum and clicked [Confirm].
【Allocation successful, a total of 80,000 gold coins】
【Current gold coins have been withdrawn from public funds】
“This is really bad,” the logistics director muttered, counting the losses, “These poor people…”
Vivi held him back: “Maybe they’re not that unfortunate. In fact, I received information from an informant that they all have another boss, likely the Penguin.”
“What?” the bald director exclaimed in surprise.
“You should check it out,” Vivi said, “I don’t want to be giving compensation to my enemies.”
【Deceased guards (Penguin’s minions)】 undergoing identity change—
【Deceased Penguin’s subordinates】
【Compensation target disappeared】
“I think I’m the one who deserves compensation. So many of my subordinates were bought by the Penguin, my heart is surely hurt.”
Vivi raised her hand, lightly flicking the sparkling pile of gold coins in mid-air.
【You have obtained personal funds: 80,000 gold coins】
The logistics director was still in shock, mumbling, “That’s crazy, I have to check their situation, and those who were injured…”
This man, both [Loyal] and [Cunning], said this as he walked out, seemingly outraged.
Meanwhile, Peter listened silently for a while, but noticed a word the mayor mentioned in passing, “informant”.
—His mind stirred.
【New Force Discovered: Penguin (Hostile)】
【All actions eliminating the minions of this force can receive varying gold coin rewards】
【Eliminated six of Penguin’s minions】
【Calculating gold coins, you have obtained personal funds: 5600 gold】
【Eliminated three of Black Mask’s minions】
【Calculating gold coins, you have obtained personal funds: 3000 gold】
【Current personal funds: 88,700 gold】
This was a huge profit, and even Vivi was somewhat excited—after all, earning gold coins in Gotham with a negative overall rating was really hard, and because of the negative rating, she could only use personal funds to buy items in the gold coin shop. Now she finally had a substantial starting fund, thanks to Black Mask and Penguin.
This made her wonder if she should repeat the trick, but now it seemed that killing one person was only worth 1000 gold, while compensation was 10,000. It was more convenient to convert public funds into personal funds… Vivi suddenly regretted using such a brute force method to eliminate a few people, as obviously, people in Gotham City couldn’t respawn, one less for each killed.
Next time she needed to find a method to continuously shear the sheep.
She stared at the [Assassin] being escorted, confirmed that she had obtained Peter’s name, and nodded to the captain of the security team:
“Prepare the plane,” she said, “I’ll personally escort him to Blackgate Prison.”
She could check the items refreshed in the shop today on the plane.
*
After Vivi left promptly.
Millie opened the door and was momentarily stunned.
The boy hadn’t left; he was silently following the logistics department, cleaning up the mess in the office.
