Chapter 19
Just as he was about to roll over her, he stopped.
She had taken medicine, but the effects shouldn’t be that strong, right?
While hesitating, he suddenly heard a particularly sweet and soft voice in the quiet night—
“Good night, Lu Yancheng!”
“Good night…”
His voice was a bit hoarse. He loosened his grip around her waist slightly and kissed her back.
Song Si nestled into his arms, actually feeling a kind of security she had never experienced before.
[So I don’t always have to be a tough girl. Maybe I just didn’t meet the right person in my past life?]
Lu Yancheng quietly held her. Before long, he heard her steady and even breathing—it was obvious she had fallen asleep.
Tough girl?
Another term he wasn’t very familiar with.
Boatman?
Girl?
The first time sleeping next to her, she was sound asleep, but he was burning up. After that kiss she gave him, there was no way he could feel sleepy. He turned to look out the window.
The night was deep and far from quiet, with the moon rising over the treetops.
Was all of this not real?
He was actually just a character in a novel—and not even the main lead, but a supporting male character.
This season, there were no chirping insects or croaking frogs outside. The silence only made his restlessness more obvious.
Then he thought about the Qingming Festival…
His parents would likely go to pay respects to their ancestors. If he and she went too, and his mother met her now—there’s no way she could dislike her anymore, right?
…
The next morning, there was a knock at the door.
Lu Yancheng glanced at the girl in his arms, gently shifted her onto the pillow, and put on the slippers she had picked for him before opening the door. Seeing Deputy Commander Zhang, he was a bit surprised and lowered his voice to greet him.
Deputy Commander Zhang looked at how Lu Yancheng, tall as a wall, completely blocked the doorway and sighed softly, “Commander Lu, you’ve changed. You’re no longer that cold, iron-blooded man.”
Lu Yancheng replied, “Really?”
Deputy Commander Zhang said regretfully, “Looks like I can’t brag about having a loving wife and warm bed anymore.”
Lu Yancheng said quietly, “Not yet. I don’t have a child, but if Sisi’s willing, we’ll have a few.”
Deputy Commander Zhang: “…”
He looked up at Lu Yancheng. Why did it feel like he rushed over early in the morning just to get force-fed PDA?
He used to be the one handing out dog food*, but now the roles were reversed. It didn’t feel good!
(*Note: “feeding dog food” = slang for showing off affection in front of singles)
He glanced down at the steaming basket of buns in his hand and suddenly didn’t feel like giving it anymore. “I’ll just head back.”
Lu Yancheng casually took the basket from him. “Thank your wife for us.”
Deputy Commander Zhang: “…”
Are you robbing me now?
He looked at Lu Yancheng. “Commander Lu, you’re too polite! This is the last time. Don’t expect me to bring anything over again.”
Just as he finished speaking, he spotted the guard Xiao Liu from Commander Chen’s side walking over.
Deputy Commander Zhang said, “Fresh shepherd’s purse buns. Give them to me. Xiao Liu’s probably here to ask you and Comrade Xiao Song to have breakfast at the Commander’s house.”
Lu Yancheng ignored him, stretched out his long arm, and placed the basket of buns on the table inside.
Deputy Commander Zhang grumbled, “Fine, fine. I’ll remember this.”
Lu Yancheng said, “Take care, Deputy Commander Zhang.”
Deputy Commander Zhang headed downstairs and bumped into Xiao Liu, exchanging greetings before hurrying home to eat his buns.
Xiao Liu quickly climbed up to the second floor, saluted, and said, “Commander Lu, the Commander asks you and Comrade Xiao Song to have breakfast at his place later.”
Lu Yancheng had already shut the door to avoid waking Song Si and spoke in a low voice, “Got it. We’ll be over in a bit.”
Xiao Liu paused, then said awkwardly, “Sorry, I didn’t know Comrade Xiao Song was still sleeping.”
Lu Yancheng: “It’s fine.”
“I’ll head off then.”
…
After Xiao Liu left, Lu Yancheng returned to the room and shut the door. When he turned around, he saw a pair of misty, clear eyes looking at him.
Song Si: “Morning.”
Lu Yancheng’s throat tightened. “Good morning.”
Song Si got up.
Lu Yancheng said, “I’ll go check if your clothes are dry.”
He went downstairs and felt the clothes hanging on the line. The pants and jacket were dry, and so was the new Dacron shirt. Only the coat was still damp.
She looked so good in that coat!
When Qingming comes, he wanted her to wear it to meet his parents. It would make a great impression.
He took the dry clothes back upstairs, looked at Song Si, and said, “They’re a bit cold. Warm them up under the blanket first. The coat’s still wet.”
Song Si: “Mm.”
Seeing him place the clothes on the spot where he had just slept made her heart feel warm and fuzzy.
[He’s really considerate!]
Lu Yancheng’s expression shifted slightly as he glanced at her.
If her uncle and Aunt Li came looking for them before he got her pregnant… his parents might still force him to divorce. But if she were already expecting, they wouldn’t have much say, right?
After washing clothes last night, he hadn’t hung her bra and underwear outside.
After all, everyone living here was male!
He glanced at the bra and panties drying on the chair, reached out and touched them, and frowned. “Still damp.”
Song Si remembered she bought a hairdryer yesterday. “It’s fine. I’ll dry them with the hairdryer.”
“I’ll do it.”
Lu Yancheng found the Donlim hairdryer box, opened it, read the instructions, and started drying the clothes seriously.
Wrapped tightly in the blanket, Song Si quietly watched him from the side.
[What do I do? At this moment, Lu Yancheng really feels like my ideal man!]
Ideal man?
That clearly sounded like a compliment!
Lu Yancheng was quite pleased with her internal praise. He handed her the now-dry underwear. “Put this on first. The bra takes longer to dry.”
Song Si: “Okay.”
As he continued drying, he said, “Do you want to shower at Deputy Commander Zhang’s place later? After that, we’ll head to the Commander and Aunt Qin’s for breakfast.”
Song Si nodded. “Sure.”
[Waaah, my golden thigh!!! I’m moved! I could cry!]
Lu Yancheng: “……”
Same golden thigh—how come his doesn’t get a prefix?
He gave Song Si a slightly dissatisfied look.
Song Si: “What? We’re not going?”
Lu Yancheng: “We are.”
His parents might’ve already spoken with the Commander. He wanted to hear where the Commander stood on things.
Anyway, he was not going to file for divorce. His mother had said that if he didn’t, she would personally write it up and send it to Commander Chen herself.
Half an hour later, Lu Yancheng brought Song Si to Deputy Commander Zhang’s house and knocked on the door.
The Zhang family was having breakfast. Hearing the knock, Zhang’s wife Wang Fang looked at their daughter. “Dani, go open the door.”
A little girl with two braided pigtails ran to the door at the sound.
She opened it and greeted sweetly, “Uncle Lu.”
Then she saw Song Si, and her little face dropped immediately. In a childish voice, she asked, “Are you Uncle Lu’s wife, Comrade Xiao Song?”
Song Si: “……”
[Well, it’s obvious this little brat doesn’t like me]
[You think I can’t win over a kid’s heart? Watch me.]
She reached out to ruffle Dani’s head.
Dani pouted and ducked away, replying rather coldly, “Come in.”
She turned and shouted toward the house, “Dad, Mom, Uncle Lu is here.”
She deliberately left out Song Si.
Wang Fang: “……”
Zhang Kai: “……”
Wang Fang quickly recovered and smacked her daughter lightly on the arm. “You little rascal!”
Zhang Kai looked at Song Si and said apologetically, “Comrade Xiao Song, sorry about that… this kid…”
He turned to his daughter and said seriously, “Zhang Lulu, that was rude. Go apologize to Auntie Xiao Song.”
Dani reluctantly walked over, looked at Song Si, and said, “Auntie Xiao Song, I’m sorry.”
As soon as she finished, her eyes turned red with grievance. Huge teardrops instantly welled up and started falling like beads on a string.
This…
Why is she crying now?
Song Si panicked a bit and looked to Lu Yancheng for help.
She really didn’t know how to handle kids!!
Lu Yancheng bent down and picked Dani up. “Uncle Lu made Auntie Xiao Song mad before, so she ignored me. You won’t misunderstand Auntie Xiao Song, okay?”
