Chapter 30
Song Si smiled and said sweetly, “Hubby, take care.”
[Take care! Not seeing you out!]
Lu Yancheng said in a low voice, “I’ll come back at noon to have lunch with you.”
Song Si quickly replied, “No need. If you’re busy and can’t make it, that’s okay. I’m an adult, not a child. I can take care of myself.”
Lu Yancheng said, “I don’t feel at ease.”
Song Si raised her hand to wave goodbye.
Lu Yancheng stood at the door for several seconds before finally leaving the room.
Song Si happily closed the door and started humming “Lang De You Huo” (“Lang’s Temptation”):
“Niangzi
A ha
You will not get hurt
Niangzi
A ha
You will not get hurt
I really want to sing a love song and watch the most beautiful fireworks…”
Standing outside the hotel room, Lu Yancheng’s eyes darkened.
It was clearly a love song—why did she sing it with such murderous intent?
And he had never heard this song before, especially with English lyrics!
He memorized the lyrics and then headed to the hospital.
When he arrived at Old Madam Lu’s room, Lu Yuanzheng and He Yunzhen were having breakfast. Upon seeing him come in, the couple both blushed, their breathing faltered, and they looked up at him stiffly in unison.
Lu Yancheng avoided his parents’ eyes and turned to his grandmother. “Grandma.”
Old Madam Lu asked, “Why aren’t you staying at the hotel with Si Si? What are you doing here?”
Lu Yancheng replied, “She’s resting. I came to check on you.”
“There’s your dad and mom here. What are you worrying about? Didn’t you drive all night last night? Go back and get some sleep.”
Lu Yancheng said in a low voice, “If I stay here with you, I can also catch a nap.”
With her there constantly teasing and whispering sweet nothings, he doubted he could get any real sleep!
Feeling the unusually heavy stares from his parents, he looked up and remembered Chief Chen’s message. “Dad, Mom, Chief Chen asked me to pass on a message—he and Aunt Qin would like to recognize Si Si as their goddaughter.”
Lu Yuanzheng gave a deep “Oh” and shot him a serious look. His voice was heavy as he said, “I understand. We’ll talk later.”
Lu Yancheng nodded. “Okay.”
Noticing something off in their tone, Old Madam Lu glanced at her son and then her grandson.
What was going on?
Everything had been fine—Yancheng had only gone to take Si Si back. Did her son and daughter-in-law do something to upset the girl?
She looked at her son. “Yuanzheng, why were you speaking so harshly?”
Lu Yuanzheng quickly replied, “Mom, I wasn’t.”
“You weren’t? I heard it!”
Old Madam Lu gave her son a glare, her voice filled with suspicion. “Tell me the truth—did you say something unpleasant to Si Si that made her leave for the hotel without saying a word to me?”
Lu Yuanzheng’s breath caught.
This was a complete misunderstanding!
Face flushing, he looked at Lu Yancheng. “You explain it!”
Lu Yancheng spoke in a low voice, “Grandma, I don’t know what they intended to say, but clearly, they didn’t get the chance to say anything.”
Hearing that, Old Madam Lu was even more confused.
She looked at him, full of questions.
Lu Yancheng said quietly, “Grandma, it’s my fault. I kissed her in the hallway, and my parents saw it. She felt embarrassed and went back to the hotel.”
Old Madam Lu’s tone instantly softened. “Oh, so that’s what happened.”
Though a bit embarrassed, she looked at her son and daughter-in-law and righteously said, “Si Si and Yancheng are still young, full of passion—it’s normal to lose control sometimes. You two are older and should be more composed. Why didn’t you avoid them? Did you have to bump into them like that?”
Lu Yuanzheng: “…”
He Yunzhen was fuming!
The old lady was far too biased!
But given her current health, she couldn’t argue.
She stood up and left the room.
Seeing her daughter-in-law leave, Old Madam Lu was much more at ease. She shot a glare at her son. “Acting like you were never young—have you forgotten when Yunzhen first visited our house and I made you sleep separately, you still climbed through her window at night? Don’t think I was deaf or blind—I knew everything.”
Lu Yuanzheng was utterly mortified. “Mom!”
Old Madam Lu pressed on, “So, did you or didn’t you?”
Lu Yuanzheng had no words. His face turned beet red, and he didn’t dare look at his own son.
Old Madam Lu said, “So you’re no better. Don’t criticize Yancheng. Just mind your own business. As for Si Si and Yancheng, stay out of it.”
Lu Yuanzheng was suffocating but couldn’t refute her.
Old Madam Lu turned to Lu Yancheng with great fondness. “Ignore your dad. He’s being a hypocrite.”
Lu Yancheng glanced at his father.
Lu Yuanzheng, too embarrassed to stay, stormed out.
And right outside the door, he ran into his wife—face flushed red.
He Yunzhen was overwhelmed with shame. Her face was as red as fire. She wanted to say something, but had no way to argue.
Because it was true. She didn’t kick him out that night. He had only snuck back to his own room the next morning.
…
In the hospital room.
Old Madam Lu looked at Lu Yancheng. “Yancheng, don’t be afraid of your dad and mom. As long as I’m alive, no one can force you to divorce Si Si.”
Lu Yancheng was stunned. “Grandma, you already know about what’s going on with the Song family?”
Old Madam Lu nodded. “If it weren’t for this, would I be so angry I fainted and got hospitalized?”
Just thinking about it made her furious!
Marriage isn’t a joke. They’ve been married for a year—how can you just say ‘divorce’ like it means nothing?
Lu Yancheng asked, “Grandma, what exactly happened?”
Old Madam Lu looked at him and said sternly, “Song Dalong and Li Li called me. They said they’re bringing their biological daughter to visit during Qingming Festival.”
Lu Yancheng didn’t respond, his expression complicated.
If possible, he didn’t want to disappoint Uncle Song and Auntie Li. They had raised him, after all.
But now, it seemed he had fallen for Song Si?
He’d embraced new thinking and modern values. He had his own views on love and marriage.
Back then, he hadn’t loved anyone yet and felt marrying anyone would be the same. Plus, he owed the Song family a great deal, so he didn’t oppose the arranged marriage.
Old Madam Lu looked at her beloved grandson. “Yancheng, what do you want?”
Lu Yancheng replied, “Grandma, I won’t divorce Si Si.”
Old Madam Lu nodded. “I understand. Don’t worry—I’ll stand by you two.”
Lu Yancheng helped her lie down. “Grandma, don’t worry about these things anymore. I’m not a kid. Trust me to handle it.”
Hearing that, Old Madam Lu felt reassured.
This grandson had always been mature and steady.
He always knew what he wanted and what he needed.
If he didn’t want to divorce, it meant he had feelings for Si Si.
In fact, she had guessed this before. If he had agreed to marry Si Si back then, it was probably because he liked her.
“Mm, Grandma trusts you.”
Lu Yancheng said, “Grandma, get some rest. I’m going to talk to Dad.”
Old Madam Lu nodded. “Have a proper talk. If he dares to lose his temper, come to me—I’ll deal with him.”
Lu Yancheng left the hospital room and saw Lu Yuanzheng smoking at the far end of the corridor. His mother stood nearby, looking worried.
He walked over. “Dad, Mom.”
Lu Yuanzheng took a deep drag and looked at him.
Lu Yancheng’s expression was calm and resolute. “Dad, Mom, I’ve thought it through. Even if you don’t agree, I won’t divorce Si Si. When we have time in the next few days, I’ll take her to Uncle Song and Auntie Li’s place and explain everything to them in person.”
