Chapter 31
Lu Yuanzheng was furious. “What do you mean by that? Have you forgotten the kindness Uncle Song and Auntie Li showed to our Lu family?”
Lu Yancheng looked at Lu Yuanzheng and He Yunzhen. “Yes, Uncle Song and Auntie Li have shown us immense kindness, but do I really have to repay them by marrying their biological daughter? I can take care of them in their old age, treat them like my own parents, and be filial.”
Lu Yuanzheng was so stunned by this that he couldn’t speak for a long while. He puffed on his cigarette heavily.
He Yunzhen said coldly, “But Uncle Song and Auntie Li only have one daughter.”
Lu Yancheng looked at her. “But I don’t like her. Forcing us together won’t make us happy.”
Don’t like her?
Hearing that, she couldn’t help but think back to what she saw that morning. “You… you like Song Si?”
Lu Yancheng replied in a low voice, “She’s my wife. Isn’t it normal for me to like her?”
He Yunzhen took a deep breath, too angry to respond for a moment.
Lu Yuanzheng couldn’t bear to listen anymore. “You call that liking someone? That’s—”
He swallowed the harsher words that were about to come out.
If his wife hadn’t said that in front of Lu Yancheng, he could’ve righteously scolded him. But now…
Feeling irritated, he stubbed out his cigarette. He still couldn’t believe what his wife had told him—it all felt like a dream. “Your Uncle Chen and Auntie Qin said she’s someone who’s been reincarnated. What exactly is going on?”
Lu Yancheng was silent for a moment. He glanced around and, seeing no one nearby, lowered his voice. “From what I’ve heard, she might have come from the future. After she died, she was reincarnated into our current time.”
He didn’t mention the possibility that they were all living in a novel, fearing they wouldn’t be able to handle it.
Lu Yuanzheng was so mad it felt like his lungs and head were about to explode. “How could you believe such nonsense? I think she’s more like a foreign spy!”
Upon hearing that, He Yunzhen immediately became alert.
Could Song Si really be a foreign agent?
She decided she needed to investigate this girl thoroughly!
Lu Yancheng’s breathing hitched. “She’s not!”
Lu Yuanzheng snapped, “How would you know? Foreign technology is so advanced. Maybe they used some kind of special tech to brainwash you and Old Chen. I think you’re all out of your minds!”
Lu Yancheng said quietly, “She hasn’t left the country this whole year and hasn’t had any contact with anyone outside of Baiyang Village. Based on the timeline, she likely reincarnated after falling and hitting her head at the Eight Immortals Temple.”
Hearing this, Lu Yuanzheng and He Yunzhen stared at him in disbelief.
Lu Yuanzheng asked, “Yancheng, do you think that’s really possible?”
He Yunzhen said, “I think she’s just got you completely bewitched.”
Lu Yancheng replied softly, “You heard her inner voice too. The Qingming Festival is coming. Uncle Chen and I have taken time off. We’ll be staying in Wancheng for a while. You can listen more while we’re there—maybe it’ll change your minds.”
Lu Yuanzheng snorted, “Fine. We’ll see.”
…
At noon, Song Si brought lunch to the hospital. When she arrived, Grandma Lu was asleep.
Seeing her carrying a large bag of food, Lu Yancheng took it from her naturally. “Is it heavy?”
Song Si: “It’s okay.”
Lu Yancheng was surprised.
Wasn’t she saying in her inner voice that she was too embarrassed to face my parents?
Why did she bring lunch over, then?
Her personality doesn’t strike me as someone who tries to please her in-laws…
Of course, he didn’t think she needed to do that either.
His dark eyes landed on Song Si’s face, and he asked softly, “Did you sleep this morning?”
Song Si: “I did.”
[Seeing your parents used aluminum lunch boxes to pack breakfast, and went a long way just to buy five of them, plus five servings of Shaanxi-style noodles—packing a meal in the ’70s isn’t easy!]
Hearing this, both Lu Yuanzheng and He Yunzhen stiffened. They couldn’t help but recall what Lu Yancheng had said earlier.
Song Si looked at them and politely greeted them, though a bit distant, “Dad, Mom.”
Since Grandma was asleep, Lu Yuanzheng and He Yunzhen just nodded, unable to speak.
Song Si had already looked away. Her clear, watery eyes landed on Lu Yancheng. “I saw a Go academy on the street just now. It looked interesting. I want to learn to play Go.”
Lu Yancheng’s breathing paused.
If she’s going to learn Go, wouldn’t she have to move to the city?
Baiyang Village is too small. There aren’t any Go instructors there!
He didn’t respond immediately, lost in thought.
Song Si was watching him, planning things in her mind.
[If I remember correctly, the national Go team was reinstated in 1974. There’s a National Games in 1975. If I join the national team, I’ll be a government employee, right? Even if my relationship with Lu Yancheng changes and he ends up with the female lead, if I win a championship, I’ll be protected by the nation’s fortune. The system and the heroine won’t be able to harm me then!]
Lu Yuanzheng and He Yunzhen froze again.
Song Si continued pondering, her thoughts bubbling.
[I remember the Go genius who dominated the field for many years, Master Du, was also from this era. He should be in his prime now. If I want to win, it won’t be easy. I need to buy a Go set and some books to start practicing hard.]
Hearing this, Lu Yancheng relaxed quite a bit. “Okay, if you want to learn, then go for it.”
But Lu Yuanzheng and He Yunzhen could no longer stay calm.
This…
It sounded so detailed and real?
They didn’t understand Go, but they felt they needed to look into it—check if the current Go scene really had a young man named Du in it.
Could it be that Song Si really was reborn from the future?
The thought made it hard for the couple to breathe.
Lu Yuanzheng opened a window, trying to catch his breath.
Song Si said happily, “Then shall we go buy the stuff after lunch?”
Lu Yancheng: “Okay.”
Song Si: “Thank you, hubby!”
[Since I’ve been reborn, I’ll chase both love and career. I fainted from coughing blood right before the championship match last life. This time, I’m going to collect so many awards it hurts!]
Lu Yuanzheng: “!!!”
He Yunzhen: “!!!”
For a moment, they wondered if they were under her influence too—completely losing their minds.
How could this be possible?
No matter what, everything coming from Song Si’s inner voice sounded like something out of a fantasy tale!
Song Si pulled out the aluminum lunch boxes. “I bought noodles. Let’s eat before they get sticky.”
Lu Yancheng: “Mm.”
He turned to his parents. “Dad, Mom, would you like some?”
Lu Yuanzheng snapped out of it and looked at Song Si. He forced himself to speak, “Thank you, Sisi.”
He handed one box to He Yunzhen.
She accepted it and decided that after lunch, she’d make a phone call—to ask around about this ‘Master Du.’
Lu Yancheng helped Song Si open a lunch box, and the two of them sat down to eat.
Song Si ate while her thoughts were still focused on Go.
[If I remember right, Master Du, who’s 20 this year, competed in the China-Japan Go Exchange and played a match against the so-called “Star of Calamity,” Kato Masao, who later became a legend in Japanese Go… He lost mid-game, right?]
He Yunzhen immediately noted that crucial piece of information.
That’ll be easy to verify!
She doesn’t believe there’s really someone who can come back to life after death!
