Chapter 5: Only You Can Call Him Home
Ning Qiutang went home, took her medicine, took a shower, and went downstairs for dinner.
Her mother made her favorite dishes: oil-fried shrimp and crab meat casserole.
“Honey, how did the doctor say it went today?”
Ning Qiutang, fully recovered and radiating energy, said, “It’s nothing, the doctor said my nightmares are probably due to stress.”
“Stress? Honey, even if you don’t get into a prestigious university, your dad and I won’t blame you. As long as you’re happy and joyful, Mom is happy.”
Ning’s mother truly doted on her daughter, unconditionally supporting her in everything she wanted to do.
Besides, with their family business, did her daughter even need to go to university? They could easily support her forever and let her do whatever she wanted.
But Ning Qiutang had always been ambitious. Perhaps because she knew she would marry Jiang Sheng in the future, she worked hard, learning various skills and attending countless interest classes, becoming proficient in almost everything. Even in her studies, she was strong enough to rank among the top ten in the prestigious High School No. 1, where geniuses abounded.
All her life’s efforts were for marrying the most dazzling, unparalleled Jiang Sheng. But now, she felt exhausted and useless.
“I know, Mom. I won’t go to those interest classes anymore, and I won’t learn piano either.”
“That’s good that you’ve come to your senses. Mom was just worried you were too tired. By the way, you’re going to the Jiang family tomorrow. Your grandpa Jiang really likes listening to Peking Opera recently. Do you want to learn?”
Ning’s mother knew how hard her daughter was trying to be with Jiang Sheng. She felt sorry for her but couldn’t change her determination.
So she could only help silently.
Ning Qiutang shook her head: “I don’t need to try so hard to please the Jiang family anymore.”
“Although I genuinely cared for the Jiang family before, it’s different now. Everything I do is no longer driven by a purpose.”
Ning’s mother didn’t understand, but seeing her daughter’s mood improve, she didn’t say anything.
Ning Qiutang took her medicine and slept better that night. She woke up early the next morning, ate breakfast, prepared some snacks to take with her, and put on a conservative dress. She didn’t dress up as flamboyantly as before.
When she arrived at the Jiang family,
The old butler immediately said: “Miss Ning, the young master didn’t come home last night. The old master is furious.”
“When the third young master comes back, he’s definitely going to get a beating.”
Was he not home because he was with Shen Wanwan?
Ning Qiutang thought about the possibility. It was better that he wasn’t home. After all, she was there to propose breaking off the engagement.
Grandma Jiang took Ning Qiutang away, asking the old butler to go and report back first.
“Grandma, slow down.” Ning Qiutang was pulled along by her grandmother, her feet couldn’t keep up.
Grandma Jiang finally noticed the white bandage around her ankle: “What happened to your foot? How did you get hurt like this? Did someone bully you at school?”
“No, it’s nothing. I just twisted it accidentally.” Ning Qiutang quickly explained, seeing her grandmother’s worry.
Grandma Jiang said: “What’s wrong with you, girl? You’re so much more polite than before. Don’t learn those manners from those ladies of high society. Grandma likes you to be lively and spirited, like a little elf. Seeing you makes me happy.”
Ning Qiutang looked at her grandmother, wanting to say something, but her depression made her happiness just an act.
Grandma Jiang realized she had said the wrong thing and smiled, holding the girl’s hand: “Grandma said the wrong thing. Grandma actually wants to see you happy.”
“Grandma, is there something you want to tell me?” Ning Qiutang changed the subject. Talking too much about her depression would make her a laughingstock. She knew the story of the boy who cried wolf.
Grandma Jiang quickly said: “Xiao Haitang, go call your third brother back, okay? Grandma really can’t bear to see that old man beat him. Don’t you feel sorry for your third brother?”
Ning Qiutang shook her head and said, “Grandma, I can’t call him back.”
“Nonsense, you are his future wife. Our Jiang family men love their wives the most. If he doesn’t listen to you, who will he listen to?”
Grandma Jiang said with a stern face, “Have the driver take you there.”
Ning Qiutang had to be sent to call Jiang Sheng back.
Underground entertainment city, member rest area.
Ning Qiutang leaned against the wall and limped inside.
She knew the layout of this place well and knew where Jiang Sheng was.
As soon as she went down, she ran into a few punks.
She walked to the side, trying to avoid them.
But some people were just troublemakers. They stared at her with lewd expressions.
“Such a pretty chick, looks like a good student. Who are you looking for, a boyfriend? Why don’t you come play with big brother first?”
He said as he reached out with his pig-like hands.
Ning Qiutang’s face was disgusted. She looked at them coldly, “Do you know who I am?”
“Even if you’re the king of the world, I’ll still bully you.”
The punk was disrespectful and was about to get physical.
Others surrounded them.
Suddenly, one of them was kicked hard and fell into the pool, splashing around for a while.
The others turned around angrily and saw that it was the notorious troublemaker in this area, someone they couldn’t afford to mess with. Their faces changed, and they immediately ran away.
Jiang Sheng, dressed in white and blue, glanced coldly at the girl huddled in the corner. His tall and slender figure was like a graceful orchid, yet also playfully bad.
Ning Qiutang met his gaze and was about to speak when he turned and walked out.
It was just a chance encounter, not a deliberate meeting.
She didn’t feel any loss. She limped after him, “Wait a minute.”
“Jiang Sheng!”
Jiang Sheng stood at the top of the stairs, watching her struggle to climb up. He actually stopped.
Ning Qiutang thought to herself, meeting him never brought good things. She quickly said, “Grandma asked me to call you home. Grandpa Jiang is angry. Don’t be so wild.”
The young man stood against the light, his expression full of disdain.
“Want to control me?”
Ning Qiutang was wearing a floral dress today, which looked particularly fresh and pure compared to her usual fiery red rose-like style. It was like two extremes. Her pure white face was free of any desire.
“No, but Grandma told me to come, so you can come back or not, it’s up to you!”
She was too lazy to say more and dragged her injured leg to leave.
After taking a few steps, she was suddenly picked up again by the young man who followed behind.
Ning Qiutang didn’t know where to put her hands and looked at the young man’s gloomy face in confusion, “I can walk by myself.”
“With such a strong will, you should apply for the Paralympics.”
Jiang Sheng was so mean, he was afraid that people would think he was showing mercy.
Ning Qiutang gritted her teeth, not wanting to argue with him.
Seeing the Jiang family driver by the roadside, he carried Ning Qiutang to the car.
As soon as he got in the car, he went to sleep.
Like he had stayed up all night.
Ning Qiutang didn’t care about him. She looked at the scenery outside the window and fell into thought.
Halfway to the Jiang family, a unique ringtone rang. She remembered that this was Shen Wanwan’s unique notification sound.
Jiang Sheng was awakened and, with a cold face, took out his phone and threw it away, cursing.
Ning Qiutang was dumbfounded, was this right?
