Chapter 9: The Wife is Really So Weak
It takes nearly two hours to walk from the village to the town police station.
Xia Li set off early, and at that time, there were hardly any people on the village roads, so no one would see her.
The man followed her for a long time, but he didn’t seem tired at all.
Seeing Xia Li pant lightly from exhaustion along the way, her pace slowing down, he quickly stepped in front of her, half-squatting with his back to her, and said in a deep voice:
“Get on my back, wife.”
Xia Li was taken aback and shook her head, “No need.”
The man stubbornly refused to move, raising his head to look straight at her.
As the sun rose, his eyes were long and deep.
His dark pupils, like amber, reflected a cold and pure light under the clear autumn sunlight in the countryside.
When he looked at her, there was a hint of hopeful expression on his face, warm and fervent.
Xia Li suddenly thought that this man didn’t even know where she was taking him; he only thought they were going to find someone.
She pursed her lips, suddenly feeling a bit reluctant to see his pure and fervent gaze.
In the distance on the long path, an old man driving a donkey approached.
His eyes narrowed, curiously sizing up the two young people by the roadside.
Xia Li urged him not to get up and gently pushed his shoulder, “I really am not tired, let’s go, it’s getting late.”
Unexpectedly, the man trembled all over when she touched his shoulder.
He glanced at her hand, and only then did he look a bit shy and obedient as he stood up, his tall figure continuing to walk behind her.
Her hands are so white… so soft.
She had very little strength.
When she pushed him just now, it felt like a feather brushing against his shoulder, so ticklish.
The man’s expression changed.
He looked down at the girl walking ahead, her height only reaching his chest, her waist so slender and soft, her neck pale, and her ankles delicate.
He could crush her with just a pinch.
His wife is really so weak…
He must take good care of her in the future, not letting her be alone. If one day a strong wind came and swept her away, he wouldn’t know where to find her.
The man silently made a resolution behind her.
The two maintained a distance of about one and a half steps apart.
When she walked quickly, he kept up; when she slowed down, he obediently matched her pace.
Xia Li occasionally glanced back.
For some reason, she felt a bit…
Uncomfortable.
The small police station in the town didn’t have many officers, and after some effort, they found a desk. The officer looked a bit surprised as he sized up the youthful-looking Xia Li, then glanced at the tall, sturdy man with a serious expression.
This… are you sure this isn’t the wrong person?
“Miss, are you sure this man is lost and needs to report it?”
This man looks even taller and sturdier than him!
Aside from his sour expression, there doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with him!
Xia Li didn’t want to directly say in front of the man that something was off with his head. She stepped aside with the officer and briefly explained the situation.
The officer was even more surprised.
Is this man really a bit slow? He doesn’t look like it at all!
Seeing his wife talking to another man off to the side and avoiding him, the man was displeased. With a heavy brow, he followed her over, trying to regain her attention.
He called out, “Wife… Li.”
Xia Li turned her head, soothingly smiling with her lips pressed together, and the man’s expression finally calmed down.
In the police station, there were only two officers on duty. After understanding the situation, they pretended to casually ask the man some routine questions.
Sure enough, he answered none of them and wore an impatient expression.
“Sir, you really don’t remember where you’re from?”
“Where is your hometown? Do you remember your parents’ names?”
Suddenly, the man stood up, his handsome face cold and serious.
Suppressing his frown, he shot the two officers an impatient glance and scoffed, “Stop rambling.”
The officers were momentarily taken aback, stunned by his cold and fierce demeanor, feeling as if they had been reprimanded by a superior.
Once they reacted, they found it inexplicable.
What kind of person is this?? Is he really a fool who isn’t afraid of anything? Is he trying to show off in the police station?!
Xia Li couldn’t help but facepalm at the sight, quickly apologizing to the two officers and pulling the man down to sit properly.
How did she not notice yesterday that this person had quite a temper? He even dared to complain about the officer’s rambling.
She looked at the man with mixed feelings.
He, however, was pleased that she pulled him again, and his cold expression softened significantly, silently forming the words “Wife” with his lips.
In the end, the officers patiently recorded some information.
Xia Li found an opportunity to step outside and talk to one of the officers.
The officer couldn’t help but feel a bit sympathetic towards the young girl: “Good for you, helping others is a commendable quality!”
“This man has some issues with his mind, so he’ll stay at the station for now. We’ll arrange for him to stay here and will also investigate if there have been any reports of missing persons in nearby towns.”
The officer made thorough arrangements, and Xia Li nodded, handing the man’s old clothes to the officer and thanking him.
She glanced at the slender silhouette through the gap in the window.
Without saying anything more, she turned and walked away.
