Looking at them, Jiang Ning fell into deep thought.
In fact, she didn’t really have a specific place in mind to go. Instinctively, she just wanted to stay far away from the distant sea and Shijin Mountain. As long as she was with the people she cared about, it didn’t matter where she went.
But over the past few years, whether it was Qin Chuan, Lu Yu, Zhang Chao, or even Rong Sanshao and the other residents of the community, they all regarded Building 50 as their guide and quietly followed its lead.
Otherwise, why did the Rong family take the initiative to build connections over the past few years? Rong Sanshao even immediately told her that the group of satellites had collided with Shijin Mountain.
The source of the news must have been official. He told her just to know her choice so he could make the decisions that would benefit his family.
If she were still in the community, it wouldn’t matter much. Once the gate was closed, no one would know the secret of Building 50. But outside, it was different.
No one knew what they were about to face. When encountering an irresistible disaster, how would they survive?
These years, she had a vague worry. Although she and Huo Yishen had been diligently raising Doudou, human nature was the hardest to predict.
Doudou will grow up, maybe even marry and have children. With loved ones close by, when she faces tough times, will she give in to greed?
And now, so many people were looking up to her, so many pairs of eyes filled with a desire to live.
Before the desperate situation, everyone was good to each other, and they could help in times of need or celebrate in good times.
But what if it comes to life and death?
During the smog, Qin Chuan used himself to test the medicine for his son. He might not be afraid of dying, but he certainly didn’t want his son to die.
She believed that Zhang Chao and Lu Yu wouldn’t harm her, but what if it was Zheng Weili or Ding Qi who were about to die?
In their hearts, could she be more important than them?
When they first met, Huo Yishen might not have been as important as Zhang Chao and Lu Yu, but after so many years of life and death support, along with the intimacy of sharing a bed.
If it really came down to choosing one or the other, Jiang Ning knew her answer clearly.
So, what she couldn’t do herself, she shouldn’t expect from others.
She thought for a moment before speaking, “I want to go to the military base in Huicheng. If it’s suitable, we’ll stay there; if not, we’ll make another choice.”
She decided not to go to the official base in Jiacheng. Even the Rong family was forced back to Fengcheng, indicating how fierce the internal struggles were, with various forces taking turns to dominate. Besides, Jiang Ning wasn’t someone with a good temper, so there was no need to run around blindly.
If Huicheng doesn’t work out, she might go to a high-altitude location.
With natural and man-made disasters, dangers lurked everywhere. Jiang Ning might not be able to come out unscathed, let alone protect or look after others.
Zhang Chao and the others were capable, and Qin Chuan had his brothers. When faced with danger, they wouldn’t surrender easily. At worst, there are officials.
Upon learning that Jiang Ning was going to the military base, a flash of disappointment crossed Qin Chuan’s eyes. Not everyone could enter the military base, and with his skills, he certainly didn’t meet the requirements.
He can only retreat to the next best thing and go to the official base in Jiacheng, and he must act quickly to get ahead of the large number of survivors.
Though disappointed, Qin Chuan knew that all good things must come to an end. Having lived for many years by copying Jiang Ning’s actions, he was truly grateful.
“You and Brother Huo should take care of yourselves. I hope we will have a chance to meet again in the future.”
Jiang Ning nodded, “You too, don’t give up easily.”
Qin Chuan made a clear choice; he immediately gathered his brothers. They would either leave together, or those who wanted to stay would stay.
He made his decision quickly, but Lu Yu found himself in a difficult situation.
Zheng Weili had been kicked out of the official base for fighting and was blacklisted, so it was impossible for her to go back.
The blacklist was shared, so even with her skills, the military base wouldn’t accept her.
Knowing this, Lu Yu didn’t want to drag down Zhang Chao and Ding Qi, “You two go to the military base, Weili and I will find another way.”
Zhang Chao disagreed, “No way, we’ve been through so much together over the years, we can look out for each other no matter where we go.”
Zheng Weili spoke up, “The three of you go to the military base with Anning. Don’t let me drag you down.”
Several of them had opposing opinions, and for a moment, no one could persuade the other.
Jiang Ning offered a suggestion, “Why don’t we go to the military base first? If it really doesn’t work out, we can make other plans then?”
That could work. At least now wasn’t the time for arguing. What if the military base changed its rules?
Lu Yu was pleased, “Okay, then we’ll go together. We can look out for each other if anything happens.”
Jiang Ning gently said, “You go ahead. We have a lot of things, so we probably won’t be as quick.”
Lu Yu, straightforward as always, replied, “It’s okay, we don’t have much stuff. We can help you carry and move things.”
Zhang Chao, being perceptive, discreetly tugged at Lu Yu and quickly said, “Alright, we will wait for you at the military base. You and Brother Shen should pay attention to safety.”
Jiang Ning hugged them, “You should also pay attention to safety.”
On the way back, Lu Yu was a little puzzled, “Anning and Brother Shen are alone with a lot of things. If we don’t help them, who will? If they encounter bad guys or robbers, should they protect themselves or their belongings?”
Zhang Chao explained, “Anning and Brother Shen have been working in Fengcheng for years. They must have a lot of supplies, and if they left so suddenly, they couldn’t take everything with them. They need time to deal with it.”
Supplies were like their lifeline; in these times, you couldn’t even trust your own mother completely, let alone entrust your life to others.
He wouldn’t do it himself, so it made sense that Anning was doing this.
Lu Yu then remembered that Anning also had a plane and fuel.
Not to mention the plane, there was no way they could take all the fuel. They would need to find a place to transfer or sell it.
He realized he had been too naive. He hoped they could transfer safely and reach the military base successfully.
No one spoke further as they hurried home to pack.
They didn’t have much, so everything fit into one off-road vehicle.
Before dawn, Zhang Chao drove to Building 50, thinking that after all the care they had received from Anning and Brother Shen over the years in Fengcheng, they should at least say goodbye even if they were leaving.
But after thinking it over, he still didn’t get out of the car. Instead, he turned the car around and left.
Whether or not they would meet again, he hoped they could live well.
If he had the chance, he hoped one day he could have the ability to take care of them and repay the kindness they had shown over the years.
Leaving, returning, leaving again—each time his state of mind was different, and his feelings had never been as complex as they were this time.
Jiang Ning stood on the rooftop, watching the off-road vehicle disappear into the night, with mixed feelings.
Huo Yishen walked up to her and softly said, “They are much more skilled and capable than most people. They’ll be fine wherever they go.”
“Mm,” Jiang Ning nodded.
The news of Building 50 leaving spread quickly, and many residents panicked.
If even they had to leave, what would happen to those who had been tormented to the brink of death?
For a while, everyone was anxiously tuning into the radio for official news or trying to find out the Rong family’s plans and how they had decided.
When Rong Sanshao learned of Jiang Ning’s decision, it felt like a thousand of wild horses were running through his mind, but he dared not be negligent and immediately reported the news to the old man.
Old Master Rong furrowed his brows deeply, then got up in the middle of the night and went to the municipal center.
Two hours later, he returned with a serious expression.
Madam Rong and her children, who hadn’t slept, quickly came up to him. “How’s the situation, old man?”
“The relevant departments conducted a special survey around the Shijin area. The equipment detected vibrations, and they did not rule out the possibility of an eruption from the dormant volcano that’s been asleep for millions of years.”
The advanced equipment had been destroyed in previous natural disasters, so they had to use more traditional methods. They detected vibrations, which had been continuously detected multiple times.
No one could be certain the volcano wouldn’t erupt, nor could they predict the scale if it did. If it was anything like the catastrophic eruption that had wiped out the northern island nation, all the residents in the surrounding area would die.
Recalling the smog disaster they had experienced, Madam Rong asked fearfully, “What should we do then?”
