After seven hours of nonstop flying and no breakfast, everyone was already starving.
Each person had a portion of braised pork rice, as well as green vegetables, and the aroma filled the escape capsule.
After eating, they didn’t forget to have a glass of juice to relieve the greasiness.
The aftershocks continued intermittently, but with the protection of the escape pod, the tremors weren’t too severe, although they don’t dare to casually go outside and move around.
What if they were called by the god of death?
The escape pod was cramped, and time seemed to pass especially slowly.
Jiang Ning took out the tablet and secured it, then clicked on the offline movie, took out the melon seeds, and started to eat…
Huo Yishen didn’t like eating them, but over the years, he had developed a great skill at peeling sunflower seeds.
He did his best to distribute the seeds evenly, sharing the peeled seeds with his wife and sister.
The dog furrowed its brow tightly, “Woof!”
Huo Yishen comforted, “Don’t worry, it’s your turn soon.”
Jiang Ning and Doudou couldn’t help laughing.
They ate and drank, and when nature called, they used the makeshift toilet.
At night, the world was silent and pitch black, and they couldn’t see their hands in front of them.
They spent the entire day escaping, leaving both their spirits and bodies completely exhausted. Jiang Ning lit a calming aromatherapy candle, and they both fell into a deep sleep.
Jiang Ning put the escape pod into the space and went out to stretch her numb body.
The space was very quiet; there was no earthquake or any natural disaster.
After sleeping on the seven-digit bed for a few hours, she returned to the escape pod.
The next day, the aftershocks had weakened a lot, and the three people and the dog went out to relax.
With nothing better to do, they decided to take out the barbecue grill and started busying themselves beside the escape pod.
The charcoal and other things had been stored before the natural disaster, and they could finally come in handy.
Jiang Ning had just grilled the chicken wings to a golden color, brushed a layer of honey on them, and wanted to put them in her mouth, but the aftershocks came again.
How could she care about eating? She left the barbecue and went to the escape pod—saving her life was the most important thing!
When the aftershock passed, the barbecue grill was still standing, but…
Doudou’s face was full of pain, “Sister-in-law, the chicken wings are burnt into charcoal.”
Not just the chicken wings, but also the oysters, squid, corn, and eggplant.
Doudou, who had experienced hunger as a child, always cherished food, and seeing so much ruined made her heart ache.
On the other hand, Jiang Ning, who had the space and was relatively well-off, quickly comforted her, “It’s okay, we’ll just do it again.”
They grilled slowly and ate slowly, as time was something they needed to pass.
In the morning, they barbecued; in the afternoon, they had a picnic.
Huo Yishen specially found two stones to make a stove, and the three of them, along with the dog, gathered some firewood nearby.
The bacon and garlic stir-fry was cooked by the little cook, Doudou.
Halfway through cooking, an aftershock hit without warning, knocking over the stones and spilling the pot and food onto the ground.
Doudou while holding a spatula, “…”
Fearing that Doudou would cry, Jiang Ning quickly threw the blame at Huo Yishen, “What’s wrong with you? You can’t even find a stone.”
Huo Yishen, who was scolded for no reason, “…”
No matter how you looked at it, even though it wasn’t intentional, wasting food was indeed shameful.
Jiang Ning, reflecting on the situation, decided to make something that wouldn’t get ruined.
How about roasting sweet potatoes?
Not only sweet potatoes, but also taro and potatoes, which are all equally delicious.
Night fell quickly, and the three of them sat around the bonfire, eating freshly roasted sweet potatoes.
They were scorching hot, with the skin charred from roasting. As they peeled them, their hands turned black, and ash stained their mouths.
Seeing Jiang Ning looking like a greedy little cat, Huo Yishen couldn’t help but chuckle. He peeled a sweet potato and handed it to her.
Jiang Ning took it and ate it, but then suddenly reached out and smeared his face.
Two streaks of black ashes appeared on Huo Yishen’s cold and handsome face.
Doudou couldn’t help laughing, “Brother, your face is black.”
Not only did Doudou laugh, but she also took out her phone to take pictures.
The photo session was relentless: solo shots, couple shots, pictures with the dog, and family portraits.
After eating and drinking, they returned to the escape pod to sleep.
The next morning, they came out to brush their teeth and wash their faces and put out a simple table to have Cantonese-style morning tea.
There was an alcohol-style glass teapot. The water in the glass pot was slowly boiled, and a small roll of Maojian tea leaves was added. The tea leaves slowly unfolded in the boiling water, and the fragrance spread with the steam…
The Maojian tea was green, and it was fresh, mellow, and sweet after a sip.
The three of them and the dog enjoyed their morning tea, and if it weren’t for the collapsed mountains around them, they would have thought they were on a leisurely vacation. Everything seemed so perfect, where was the end-of-the-world disaster?
Except for the weakening of the aftershocks, they no longer entered the escape pod unless it was necessary, but Jiang Ning took out the tent and set it up.
Five days passed like this. It was comfortable, but the disaster could not be ignored.
Unfortunately, being far from the city and surrounded by devastation, they had no idea what was happening outside.
Everywhere was filled with collapses and cracks; even if they had a vehicle, they wouldn’t be able to travel.
But Jiang Ning was always cautious. She wanted to understand the actual situation outside so that she could prepare for any unexpected events at any time.
After discussion, the two decided to fly out.
They were heading for the seaside, and in order to save fuel, they took a direct route to shorten the flight.
The original plan was to fly for two hours, but they arrived in just an hour and a half.
It wasn’t that the distance was shorter; rather, the city near the sea had already fallen, swallowed by the roaring sea.
The tsunami had passed, but the sea level continued to rise.
Jiang Ning couldn’t tell where she was under her feet, but according to the speed of the helicopter, more than 100 kilometers from the coast to the inland had been submerged.
They didn’t expect the sea to advance so quickly. Although they didn’t speak about it, both felt a heavy weight in their hearts.
For now, they can only take things one step at a time.
The helicopter turned around and headed back.
After returning, the two were in a heavy mood and it took a day to adjust.
They lived each day as it came, with both joy and sorrow being part of their days. Even if their lives ended, they wouldn’t feel regret.
So, they continued to eat and drink as usual.
As time went by, the aftershocks were completely over. Jiang Ning put away the escape pod and walked around the surrounding area every day.
She wanted to prevent outsiders from intruding and stay informed about the situation outside.
The three of them and the dog climbed to a high point, they used binoculars to observe the distant landscape.
The terrain was relatively high; even though the land was silent, it didn’t change so quickly.
Unexpectedly, Jiang Ning accidentally discovered a migrating team.
There are a few thousand people, all looking ragged and disheveled, with varying degrees of injuries. They are all dejected, like zombies.
The direction they were heading in was likely where Jiang Ning had chosen to settle.
After all, this area was at a higher altitude and had a more stable terrain.
The Fire Seed Base was only established in five major war zones, but each province had an official base. If she guessed correctly, this group of survivors might be migrating from the southeast towards the inland.
No one knows how far they have walked and how long it will take to find a new home.
Or, they might wander all their lives until the day they close their eyes.
Jiang Ning was only a bystander and a witness.
After two lives, a total of 12 years in the natural disaster, she had seen and heard so much that she had long been numb and could hardly empathize.
Because even if she had the space to cheat, she still didn’t know if natural disasters truly had an end.
She continued to observe the group several kilometers away through her binoculars, she thought for a while before saying, “How about we find a new place?”

Please bear with me if I didn’t update right away 😅. I was either buried in work 💼… or buried in rereading the book 📖. (P.S. Most of the time I’m rereading it 🤭—so you know just how good the story is! 🌟)
