Jiang Guanshan quickly searched his pockets and found the medicine bottle, but it was empty.
Damn it, the medicine is already gone.
In a moment of panic, he shouted, “Who has medicine? Who has quick-acting heart-saving pills?”
But it had been ten years since the natural disaster. Who would still have the medicine?
Everyone was in a panic. “Quick, turn around and go back to the hospital.”
The Chief stopped them while breathing heavily. “I’m fine. I just need to rest, so don’t bother them. Today’s work is more important.”
What he didn’t say is that the medicine is long gone, yet he refuses to mention it.
He didn’t want to go back, but the others were worried and insisted on it.
Jiang Ning looked at the Chief, who looked like he was in great pain. He was about the same age as Gu Tinglin.
After a moment’s hesitation, she stood up. “I have some.”
When she prepared the pills for Gu Tinglin, she had also kept a few bottles for herself in case of emergency.
She took out the medicine bottle from her bag and handed it over.
The bottle was blank, with a label on it: Quick-acting heart-saving pills.
Concerned for the leader’s safety, Jiang Guanshan asked, “Are you sure this is a quick-acting heart-saving pill?”
Jiang Ning took the medicine back. “It’s produced by the pharmaceutical factory at the southern military base. If you’re worried about its safety, you can give it back to me.”
Jiang Guanshan grew anxious and quickly snatched it back. “I was just asking; I trust you.”
She lived at the base, and her husband still worked in Area A. They wouldn’t dare to mess around.
He opened the bottle, smelled it, and thought it was similar to what the leader usually took.
Other officers were also worried about safety, but the urgency of the situation was clear; even if they immediately returned to the hospital, it might be too late.
They decided to give it a try.
Jiang Guanshan poured out four pills and asked the Chief to place them under his tongue and hold them.
Everyone’s heart was in their throats. It wasn’t until five minutes later that the Chief’s face relaxed and they were all able to sigh in relief.
Jiang Guanshan felt relieved, walked to the corner, and sat next to Jiang Ning. “Comrade Jiang, I was anxious just now and said something too much. I apologize, and thank you so much today.”
“It’s just a small favor.” Jiang Ning extended her hand to him. “Where’s the bottle?”
Jiang Guanshan smiled shrewdly, kept the medicine bottle in his pocket, and held it tightly. “You and Xiao Huo are so young and healthy. You don’t need this medicine at all. How about selling it to me?”
“Not for sale.”
“What do you want? Just say it.”
“Not for sale.”
“As long as it is within my ability, just ask.”
Jiang Guanshan smiled like Maitreya Buddha. “Even if I can’t manage it, there are still leaders above.”
Jiang Ning still refused. “Still not for sale.”
“The Southern Military Base was formerly the Southern Military District. Its headquarters was located in Yuecheng before the natural disaster. Chief of Staff Si worked in the Southern Military District when he was young and was later transferred to the Eastern Military Base. You also came from the Southern Military Base; isn’t that a coincidence? He and the head of the Southern Military Base have a life-long friendship.
Saving a life is better than building a seven-story pagoda. You have been taken care of a lot in the Southern Base, right? Think of it as a return to the Southern Military Base.”
As expected of someone in administration; he could twist words so skillfully.
Jiang Ning looked at Jiang Guanshan in confusion but remained silent.
Jiang Guanshan’s eyes flashed. “Without special care, how could you get a submarine?”
He has been in the military district all his life and is familiar with the rules and regulations. Submarines are strategic materials. Without the approval of the top leaders, ordinary survivors can’t get them at all.
Jiang Ning thought for a while and whispered, “My request is not high. I just want three more rooms.”
The rules and regulations of the military base are very strict. Each person can only rent one room; it’s not possible to rent more.
That’s it? Jiang Guanshan was stunned for a moment, thinking there was something wrong with his ears.
But he responded quickly, “Sure, I’ll arrange for three more rooms for you.”
There weren’t many survivors now, and the base was still expanding, so they definitely had enough rooms.
Afraid she might not agree, he quickly added, “The living environment in Area B Zone 4 is good, but as more survivors arrive, there are bound to be some conflicts. I’ll move you to Area B Zone 2, where all the residents are military personnel. They’re either on missions or working, so your neighbors won’t bother you.”
Jiang Ning agreed without hesitation. “That works.”
The deal was successful, and both sides were very satisfied.
However, Jiang Guanshan was a shrewd man. “Comrade Jiang, do you have any more medicine? We can have a long-term cooperation.”
Jiang Ning closed her eyes to rest. “You’re thinking too much.”
There would be plenty of opportunities in the future, and it wasn’t appropriate to discuss business on the ship, so Jiang Guanshan didn’t continue but returned to his position and put the medicine into the pocket of the Chief of Staff.
The Chief of Staff turned around and nodded to Jiang Ning to express his gratitude.
Jiang Ning smiled.
She didn’t lack emergency heart pills; she just gave them away without reservation. But giving too easily might raise suspicion.
It was better to seek some benefit for herself to ensure everyone was happy.
The ferry soon arrived at Area B, and Jiang Guanshan led the leaders off the ship to inspect.
The Chief of Staff looked in the direction Jiang Ning had left. “From the Southern Military Base?”
“Yes.” Jiang Guanshan nodded quickly. “A group of people from the Southern Military Base came one after another. All of them were Fire Seed Planner who drove submarines, but 2688 was a private submarine.”
Private submarine? That wasn’t something just anyone could obtain.
The Chief of Staff came back to his senses. “How did you manage to get that from her? What if she needs it?”
“Rest assured, 2688 should have significant backing; they entrusted the 1926 submarine to return Colonel Wang’s remains, and they also gave them a supply of food and medicine. So she shouldn’t be lacking in medicine.”
When it comes to life and death, who would easily part with their supplies?
When the Southern Military Base was mentioned, the Chief of Staff frowned. “Is there any news about Chief Gu yet?”
“None for now,” Jiang Guanshan reported. “However, we’ve located the leaders from the Northern Military Base; their ships are heading towards the base.”
“Send more people to look for them and make sure to find more survivors.”
After having lunch with Doudou, Jiang Ning had just woken up from her nap when the administrator knocked on the door and mentioned the change of room.
The family of three moved to Area B Zone 2, and they could get three more rooms and be exempt from rent for half a year.
The administrator’s eyes changed when he saw her, but he didn’t say anything. Instead, he handed over the key. “Don’t worry, you can move slowly when you have time.”
Jiang Ning took the key. “Thank you.”
Probably because Jiang Guanshan had reminded him, the administrator was extremely enthusiastic. “If you have any difficulties, feel free to come to me anytime.”
Jiang Ning said politely. “Okay, thank you for the trouble.”
In the evening, Huo Yishen came back on time.
Jiang Ning asked, “How was work?”
“Not bad.”
He was the leader responsible for patrol security in Area A, which belonged to the administrative district of the base. The new survivors were full of hope for their new home and mostly grateful, so there were few troublemakers.
But he needs to be careful in the next few Areas since the survivors living in those parts either have mental or physical problems due to the virus infection. Their emotions are easily unstable, and they tend to attack others.
Today, a patrolman was injured and rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment.
It seems that he was stabbed by several crazy survivors and lost a lot of blood. It is hard to say whether he can be saved.
Huo Yishen mentioned a few things about work and suddenly asked, “What did you promise Jiang Guanshan? He came back like a different person, and he almost worshipped me as a Bodhisattva.”

Please bear with me if I didn’t update right away 😅. I was either buried in work 💼… or buried in rereading the book 📖. (P.S. Most of the time I’m rereading it 🤭—so you know just how good the story is! 🌟)
