The dog, unsure whether it was feeling guilty or simply unaware of pain, kept wagging its tail at them.
Lying in the snow, it exposed its belly, looking for a petting.
Jiang Ning was furious and quickly squatted down to check its wounds.
There were two cuts on its legs, caused by sharp teeth, and scratches on its back from something sharp.
Jiang Ning carefully checked the corner of its injured mouth and found a tuft of white hair.
This fur… a polar bear?
Impossible, the difference in size is too large.
Huo Yishen observed it closely. “A wolf?”
Jiang Ning instinctively felt it was impossible, after all, it had been ten years since the natural disaster, and if humans were struggling so much, then what about the animals…
But then she reconsidered. Animals’ survival instincts might be even better than humans’, and perhaps some had survived.
A white wolf?
Did Coke win or lose?
Not wasting time thinking, Jiang Ning checked that there was no danger nearby and carried it into the space.
After disinfecting and applying medicine, she pointed at its nose and scolded, “Coke, if you dare act so recklessly again, believe it or not, I’ll throw you out.”
What could Coke say? It just lay there, wagging its tail continuously.
Half an hour of scolding still wasn’t enough, and Jiang Ning even shifted her frustration to Huo Yishen. “You’re supposed to be its trainer, look at how spoiled it’s become!”
It even dared to chase an Arctic wolf—truly reckless!
It made it back alive today, but what about next time?
Huo Yishen, who was unjustly blamed. “…”
After the scolding, it couldn’t jump around with its injuries, so Jiang Ning put it in her backpack.
They left the space and walked back against the cold wind.
After all the commotion, it was already dark by the time they returned.
Jiang Ning was still mad, so when they got home, she made the dog sit and think about what it had done. During dinner, it wasn’t allowed to eat, let alone have its favorite treat.
Coke looked at Doudou, its eyes pleading.
Doudou didn’t dare to step in, knowing that her Sister-in-law was genuinely upset
After dinner, Huo Yishen gave the dog a two-hour “lecture.” He only stopped when Jiang Ning’s mood seemed to improve.
The next morning, while Jiang Ning was still asleep, Coke sneaked into the room, nudging her with its head. “Woo woo woo…”
But no amount of whining would work.
Jiang Ning turned her back on it.
The dog just sat down and refused to go anywhere.
The first thing Jiang Ning did upon waking up was check the dog’s injuries.
Thankfully, the wounds hadn’t gotten infected.
Dogs heal quickly, and within a week, the wounds had closed.
During this time, Coke behaved exceptionally well, showering Jiang Ning with affection and sticking to her like glue.
Just when Jiang Ning thought it might have learned its lesson, it ran away again.
Yes, one moment it was in her arms being affectionate, and the next, without any hesitation, it dashed outside…
Wolves are vengeful pack animals. These past few days, Doudou had been patrolling the snow hills, worrying that they would appear again but hadn’t found any signs of them.
Just when they thought they could relax, it came back again.
Similar to the last time, by the time people chased after Coke, it was already gone.
Jiang Ning was so angry she could hardly breathe. Sitting down on the snow hill, she thought: if the wolves wanted to retaliate, there would be no time to save it.
If it insisted on courting death, there was nothing she could do.
Doudou, anxious and impatient, kept looking through the binoculars, searching non-stop.
Half an hour later, a brown figure appeared in the distance.
Doudou shouted in surprise, “It’s Coke; it’s back.”
As expected, it was injured again.
Feeling sorry for it once was compassion; feeling sorry twice was foolishness.
Seeing its wounds weren’t too serious, Jiang Ning gritted her teeth and gave it a couple of slaps, and didn’t even bother with medicine.
It wasn’t afraid of fighting or challenging danger—it must just be bored out of its mind.
This time, she let it go hungry for an entire day.
She needs to give it a lesson non-stop.
However, the ungrateful dog promised to behave, but once its wounds healed, it ran off again.
This time, it wasn’t fast enough.
Jiang Ning chased quickly and spotted a thin white shadow running across the snow.
It was snow-white, and if not for her sharp eyes, it would have been nearly invisible.
Coke chased after it like the wind.
The white wolf was quickly caught, and they tumbled into the snow, fighting.
Jiang Ning instinctively pulled out her gun to shoot the white wolf, but realized it was out of range.
She quickly switched to her submachine gun, but noticed that the two were caught up in a fierce fight, occasionally disappearing into the snow and then jumping out of it.
They were moving so fast and got all tangled up again, so it was impossible to aim properly.
Worried for Coke’s safety, Jiang Ning handed the gun to Huo Yishen. “You do it.”
His marksmanship was excellent, so she was confident he wouldn’t miss.
Huo Yishen raised the gun, but the white wolf was fighting and running at the same time, and it had already moved more than 200 meters away.
What was going on? He can’t even make the shot from this close!
Frustrated, Jiang Ning pulled out her sniper rifle.
It wasn’t that Huo Yishen missed on purpose; the white wolf blended so well with the snow that it was incredibly difficult to aim accurately.
The dog and wolf were chasing and biting each other closely, and if he wasn’t careful, he could actually injure Coke.
And if Coke got hurt or killed, Huo Yishen seriously doubted Jiang Ning would forgive him.
Surprisingly, although it was a wolf, Coke didn’t seem to be at a disadvantage.
As they continued fighting, it wasn’t clear if they were tired or just didn’t want to fight anymore.
Eventually, they ended up separating.
They were growling and threatening each other, but it didn’t seem like they were really into it, so they just backed off slowly
As expected, Coke was injured again, but it was less serious than before.
Jiang Ning got so fed up with playing the ‘The Boy Who Cried Wolf’ game over and over that she just couldn’t be bothered anymore.
Coke was in good condition—why couldn’t it just finish off the wolf?
Even though it’s a wolf, but it’s really skinny.
After feeling both frustrated and down, Jiang Ning began to question herself. Had she been too strict with Coke?
She treated it like a dog, but it was as smart as a human.
Why not just get rid of the wolf? Is it because it’s so lonely and frustrated that it ends up playing with the wolf to kill time?”
Jiang Ning was a bit confused. “Why does Coke keep rebelling? It used to be so obedient.”
Coke used to be very obedient in the past.
Huo Yishen considered thoughtfully, “Maybe Coke needs relationships and emotional interactions, just like us.”
Raising a pet is not much different from raising a child, but in the midst of a natural disaster, they had often overlooked this.
Dogs are dogs; even as the most loyal companions to humans, they are not humans.
Jiang Ning frowned, wanting to respond, but couldn’t find the words.
Still, she didn’t punish Coke again. She decided to observe instead.
Sure enough, a few days later, it happened again.
They continued to fight, venturing farther and farther…
Jiang Ning was completely numb to it.
She sat on the snow hill watching. As long as Coke wasn’t in mortal danger, she wouldn’t use her sniper rifle.
Eventually, they went way too far, and it was hard to tell if they were fighting or just messing around. Anyway, they came back after two hours.
There were marks on its body but no real injuries.
The more she watched, the stranger it seemed.
Coke even stopped eating its favorite legs. Jiang Ning thought maybe it had an upset stomach from being out in the cold too long.
To her surprise, it carried the food outside and hid it.
When the white wolf came back to provoke Coke, Jiang Ning went to check its hiding spot—the food was gone.
No matter how hard she searched, she couldn’t find it!
She realized the truth.
They’d fought… and fallen for each other.
