The Beginning of Natural Disaster, I Won by Hoarding Tens of Billions of Supplies
The Beginning of Natural Disaster, I Won by Hoarding Tens of Billions of Supplies | Chapter 9: Rising Water Levels

[edited]

The water in the space didn’t stop, Jiang Ning filled it up and continued.

On the first floor, there were three households. Each of them are occupying the second, third, and fourth floor corridors, which made the original floor occupants feel uneasy. But considering everyone’s difficulties, they didn’t say anything.

But soon enough, some people couldn’t handle it anymore. Garbage was being thrown everywhere, and every now and then, there were knocks on their doors from people asking to use the restroom.

With no water to flush the toilets, residents could only find ways to collect water from their balcony. They were reluctant to allow outsiders in, so the frustrated first floor residents resorted to meeting their needs in the corridor. When the situation became unbearable, they moved upstairs.

It seemed that since they were having a hard time themselves. They weren’t going to make it easy for others either.

At one point, there were multiple conflicts, and occasional arguments could be heard echoing from the stairs.

Similarly, the group chat was in chaos, flooded with complaints and hostility. The peaceful atmosphere that had existed before the typhoon had completely vanished.

Jiang Ning’s phone kept on ringing. Yang Weicong, who was unwilling to give up, kept on adding her to be friends. Even Su Mengyao joined in the commotion.

The latest message read, “[Anning, listen to my explanation, Mengyao and I are just ordinary friends.]”

It’s estimated that there is not much food supplies on the 12th floor, which is why Yang Weicong is so persistent.

It seemed that he was confident that she had some supplies. If it weren’t for the staircase being blocked, he probably would have rushed up long ago.

Jiang Ning scrolled through the group messages, and sure enough, she saw that a girl from the 12th floor had left a message requesting help, and she was even willing to trade some goods.

With water, electricity, and gas all cut off, there was still no news of rescue. Although they managed to make phone calls, they were instructed to stay within the building and not to venture outside. Eventually, they lost all communication.

The weather department said the typhoon would last four to five days. However, now on the fifth day, instead of weakening, the wind is only getting stronger.

Several households in the neighborhood had their windows broken, and their houses were in a mess. An elderly person also passed out from an unexpected heart attack.

Trapped by the floodwaters and unable to call for help, scared family members pleaded in the group chat: “Does anyone have medicine for heart problems? We’re out at home. Even fast acting heart pills would help. Please, save my dad!!!”

The voices were desperate, hysterical, and helpless.

Jiang Ning has fast acting heart pills in stock, but the patient is in Building 15, several hundred meters away from her unit, and the message was sent an hour ago.

Standing on the balcony, she could vaguely see things floating up and down in the water.

Using her binoculars to take a closer look, she was shocked to see a corpse.

In the group chat, they mentioned it was someone from Building 3. The person had gone without food for two days and decided to take a chance and go out to search for food. Unfortunately, luck was not on his side. Before he could even swim out of the community, he was struck by lightning that hit a tree, electrocuting him to death while in the water.

Did it happen in her past life?

She wasn’t certain. By then, her phone had long died, and she was so hungry that she resorted to drinking rainwater to ease her hunger.

Looking out at the unfamiliar world outside, she felt a heavy weight in her heart. But when she turned around and saw the green shoots sprouting from a planting pot, it unexpectedly lifted her spirits.

The seeds she had scattered had sprouted, with tiny yellow green shoots poking out.

The unexpected sight of new life lifted Jiang Ning’s mood. She squatted down and patted the rabbits in the cage eating their feed. She noticed that the mother rabbit seemed to have gotten fatter.

Reaching out to touch, she felt a firm bulge in the belly.

…It was pregnant.

It must have been pregnant when she bought them, but she hadn’t noticed at the time.

For rabbits, the gestation cycle lasts for thirty days.  Judging from her belly, she would probably give birth shortly after the typhoon ended.

Jiang Ning was delighted and couldn’t help but reward them with two carrots.

At noon, she enjoyed a spicy hot pot and pineapple beer while binge watching dramas. She blocked out the world outside her window, feeling an indescribable sense of calmness in both her body and mind.

Just as she finished washing the dishes and was about to take a nap, Doudou came knocking at the door—three short knocks and one long one.

She had recovered from her cold, and she looks much more energetic. Her hair was styled into a messy bun, undoubtedly the work of 1801.

She handed her a bright red apple, her innocent smile lighting up her face. “Sister, this is for you.”

“Thank you.” but Jiang Ning declined, gently teaching her, “Doudou, keep the good stuff for yourself. Don’t let others see you eating it, or they might snatch it away.”

Children who were so naive about the ways of the world would surely attract the attention of the beasts in the apocalypse.

“I’m not giving it to others, only to you, sister.”Doudou no longer felt shy, stubbornly holding up the apple. “We have plenty at home.”

Jiang Ning, “…”

I’m curious how 1801 handles this child’s stubbornness.

“I won’t tell others,” Doudou covered her mouth and assured her, “Only tell it to you sister”.

Feeling speechless, Jiang Ning had no choice but to accept it and gave her two pieces of candy in return.

A message came in on WeChat from Zheng Weili, [Anning, the water has flooded more than half of the first floor. If it reaches the second floor, can Lu Yu and I stay with you for a while?]

Zheng Weili was from the sports university, the champion of the National College Sanda Championship, and Lu Yu’s live in girlfriend.

Lu Yu, Zhang Chao, and Jiang Ning were all orphans, and they grew up together.

Lu Yu was frail and Zhang Chao was weak, yet they still ganged up on her. They learned their lesson after she severely beat them up.

She remember that Zhang Chao lacked affection and he always sought comfort from her as her older sister.

While Lu Yu always felt a lack of security. With his delicate appearance akin to a porcelain doll, he had been pursued by girls since his youth. However, he found himself drawn to Zheng Weili, who had a more boyish look. He mentioned that he felt an unusual sense of safety when he slept with her in his arms.

Zheng Weili also treasured him deeply, fearing the thought of losing him.

The four of them get together occasionally, and their relationship is pretty good.

In their past lives, their phones had died, but in this life, she insisted on keeping her network open, just waiting for Zheng Weili.

[Wei Li, the landlord’s things are occupying the other room so I can’t move them, but 1803 is vacant. You and Lu Yu can move in, but you need to hurry. If the second floor really gets flooded, I’m afraid they’ll be snatched away by someone else.]

After waiting for a long time, the other side responded to the message, [Okay, pay attention to it for us]

With the typhoon and heavy rain, there were occasional thunderstorms, and they would only take risks when they had no other choice.

Zheng Weili was just asking in advance. She was naturally optimistic and positive. The water had only flooded half of the floor, so it might not necessarily reach the second floor.

In fact, the flooding had affected more than just the second floor in the past, but Jiang Ning couldn’t reveal that. Anyways, the house was still vacant.

At mealtime, 1801 came to find Doudou.

Unexpectedly, Dou Dou didn’t want to go. “No, I had diarrhea after eating the rice cooked by my brother.”

Huo Yishen looked embarrassed. ” I made it according to the recipe today. ”

“You said the same thing yesterday,” Doudou, who had been traumatized, was afraid. “Sister’s cooking is delicious.”

Now even Jiang Ning felt embarrassed. “I just cooked plain boiled noodles. What’s so delicious about that?”

Huo Yishen didn’t indulge her. “Doudou.”

His features were cold and aloof, emitting an unapproachable aura. When his face darkened, it became even more intimidating.

Doudou wilted instantly and obediently followed him out with her head down.

At the doorway, Huo Yishen turned around. “Jiang Ning, the corridor garbage hasn’t been cleared by the property management. How about we discuss it?”

The garbage hadn’t been collected for several days, and even though it was sealed with lids, it still stank. Jiang Ning had been planning to find an opportunity to deal with it, but 1801 brought it up first.

There wasn’t much to discuss about the public environment. They quickly reached an agreement: they would dispose of the garbage first, and in the future, each household would manage their own garbage and refrain from dumping it in the corridor.

With the property management suspended, residents from other floors had been throwing garbage downstairs. Jiang Ning had no objections and held her nose as she threw bag after bag of garbage downstairs.

Jiang Ning also mentioned the possibility of Zheng Weili moving in to 1801.

1801 had no objections, but there were only two keys.

However, that wasn’t the main concern. The important thing was that Zheng Weili could defend herself. During the apocalypse, she saved Jiang Ning multiple times. There was even one instance where she gave her 2 pounds of noodles.

In such a harsh environment, where she can still give away her life saving food to others, it only shows that her character can withstand the test.

Unfortunately, they hadn’t met again later, and nobody knew whether she was alive or dead.

Even if she had enough food, trying to survive alone in this sinful world was just wishful thinking.

Especially those girls who live alone, who look weak and pitiful and are somewhat attractive are likely to be targeted for their remaining resources very quickly.

No matter how strong she is, it is impossible to defend all of them.

If there was a chance, she wouldn’t mind finding a partner.

Zheng Weili is the person she wants to find and repay, but at the same time she will still remain vigilant.

Back at home, after showering and changing clothes, she realized she had cooked a lot of heavy flavored dishes over the past few days. Altogether, it would be enough for four to five months. For the next few days, she could make lighter dishes like dumplings, flour noodles, mixed congee, and green bean soup, and then take a break entirely.

The typhoon continued, the heavy rain was somewhat less, but the water level was still rising…

no, she bought blastproof glasses, it was mentioned. The balcony is glassed off, the room is sealed with stainless steel doors, hence her cooking caused smells and fumes, which is why she needed the exhaust fan.
