Chapter 13: Cold Tossed Fox Ears
I stormed out of the mansion, mentally cursing Wen Ye and Zhao Yanzu’s ancestors several times over. Finally, I pulled out my phone and painfully transferred the 40,000 yuan back.
What a loss! I didn’t earn a single penny, and I even lost 300 yuan on buying ingredients. Adding the 2,000 yuan I owed Peng Fei, I was completely broke.
Why is my life so unlucky, Le Xiaomai?
I just started to make some progress, but it turned out to be a trap. Among the myriad lights outside, why isn’t there one lit for me?
Thinking of what Wen Ye had said earlier, I felt a sense of sadness. Whether it was true or false, I was still an unwanted child.
A violent storm raged with lightning and thunder.
I squatted in the empty first-floor reception hall, hugged my knees, and sobbed softly.
Damn it, I forgot to bring an umbrella!
My phone buzzed, and seeing that it was Zhao Yanzu calling, I wiped my tears and pressed the answer button.
“Xiaomai, are you really not considering doing it anymore?”
I sniffled. “I can’t do it. You should find someone else.”
“Did Wen Ye bully you?” He heard the nasal tone in my voice and comforted me, “That’s impossible. My little fox has a good heart; he’s just got a sharp tongue. He’s seriously ill now, how could he be a match for you?”
“No, it’s not his fault.” I walked outside the lobby, observing the rain, and calculating how to get back.
Zhao Yanzu wondered, “Where are you now?”
“Downstairs in the residential complex, preparing to go back to school,” I answered truthfully.
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the phone. He bargained, “How about this, Xiaomai? It’s too late today, and it’s raining so heavily outside. It’s not safe for you to go back to school now. Stay at Wen Ye’s place tonight.”
“If you still don’t want to do it tomorrow morning, I’ll take the money back and compensate you for today’s work.”
“If you want to continue doing it, I’ll return the money to you. How about that?”
I was in a dilemma. On one hand, I really needed the money, and on the other hand, I really didn’t want to get involved in this mess.
Seeing that I wasn’t speaking, Zhao Yanzu continued, “Xiaomai, it was a bit despicable of Yanzu-ge to get you involved this way, but it was the only way. We’re at a critical point, and I can’t watch Gu Ye’s five hundred years of cultivation go to waste.”
“Besides, you’ll have to get involved in this sooner or later…” He paused slightly, “Yanzu-ge will give you a heads-up. Someone’s got their eye on you.”
“Are you talking about Lin Miao?” I asked, puzzled.
There were two hissing sounds on the other end of the phone, indicating some difficulty. “This involves heavenly secrets, so I can’t tell you explicitly, but I don’t know that what’s-her-name Miao you’re talking about. I’m referring to someone else.”
I pouted and muttered in dissatisfaction, “How is it heavenly secrets again? What kind of immortals and experts are you all? You’re so hesitant when you speak.”
“Hehe, words become karma. Cultivators cannot reveal the mysteries within. Many things and truths need to be discovered slowly by yourself.” There were two thumping sounds on the other end of the phone, as if he were patting his chest. “But Yanzu-ge guarantees you won’t be in mortal danger. Wen Ye will take good care of you.”
“I’m taking care of him.” I couldn’t help but roll my eyes.
“It’s all the same. Now you’re taking care of him, and he’ll take care of you in the future. He’s counting on you to find the spirit pearl. If you tell him to go east, would he dare to go west?”
I chuckled. “Why aren’t you asleep yet? It’s already so late.”
I looked at the time, it was already 3:30 in the morning.
“Wasn’t it because I was worried about you two having an unsuccessful chat?”
I breathed a sigh of relief, hesitating, “I’ll consider it for another night. If it really doesn’t work…”
“If it really doesn’t work, we will definitely not disturb your life. Is that okay?” He took my words and made a guarantee.
“Okay.”
Returning to the mansion again, I felt both apprehensive and embarrassed, like a child who ran away from home after arguing with their parents, but sheepishly ran back because they didn’t have any money.
It’s not because of the money, it’s because I didn’t bring an umbrella! I won’t talk to him first!
Unless…
“Ah! Why are you hiding here!” Turning on the lights in the living room, I was startled to see Wen Ye huddled under a bar stool.
He was barefoot, hugging his knees, his tail wrapped around his calves, and his toes were curled up together, looking pitiful.
I knelt down and tugged his arm, but he deliberately resisted, still turning his head away and not looking at me. “Didn’t you leave? Why are you back?”
I looked at him helplessly. “Fine, I’m cheap, okay? Come out first. The ground is cold.”
“None of your business.” He used force on his hand, breaking free from me, and I landed on my butt.
“Wen Ye!” I looked at him angrily, shouting, “You’re not coming out, are you!”
Seeing that he turned his head and still ignored me, my lungs were about to explode with anger. Suddenly, I felt a cramp in my stomach, and a warm sensation flowed out.
Wen Ye sniffed, slowly turning his head to look at me, frowning. “Blood… are you bleeding?”
I didn’t check the calendar when I went out today, and my period came early.
Wen Ye crawled out from under the bar, sniffing wildly at my body, almost sniffing my lower body. I put my hand on his face to keep him away from me, embarrassed, “I’m not bleeding!”
“But I smell the scent of your blood.” He looked at me, confused. “You don’t look well. Were you injured outside?”
I stood up, clutching my stomach, and said softly, “No, I just got my period.”
“Period?” He looked blank.
My temples throbbed wildly. I didn’t know how to explain human physiology to a fox spirit.
There were many convenient drinks in the bar’s storage cabinet, including brewable ginger brown sugar. I boiled a pot of hot water, made a cup, and drank it down.
After going to the bathroom to clean up, Wen Ye kept following behind me, asking me if I was okay.
On the first day of my period, I habitually had menstrual cramps. My lower abdomen was heavy and bloated. I wasn’t in the mood to pay attention to him. Huddled in bed, I prepared to get a good night’s sleep.
“Le Xiaomai, why are you bleeding?” Wen Ye sat next to me, staring with two eager eyes, not giving up.
I covered my head with the quilt, refusing to answer.
As a result, this guy pulled the quilt off me, saying seriously, “You can’t breathe like this.”
I was about to be driven crazy. Was he sent by heaven to torment me?
After taking a few deep breaths, I seriously explained the issue of menstruation to him and glared at him, warning, “I need to rest now. It’ll be dawn soon. I haven’t slept all night. If you keep asking questions, I’m going to die from exhaustion.”
Seeing that he stopped talking, I covered myself with the quilt and turned away.
When I was half-asleep, Wen Ye patted my face, waking me up. He said seriously, “Female foxes also have the bleeding problem you mentioned, but it’s during the mating season. Le Xiaomai, are you going into heat? How do humans handle going into heat?”
Ah! Heaven, if you want to punish me, just kill me! Don’t let a demon torment me! I’ve really had enough!
Seeing that he was still looking at me, I struggled up in anger and threw him down with the quilt, avoiding his wounds. I pinned his hands down with both of my hands and said fiercely, “Humans eat small animals when they go into heat, especially delicious little foxes like you, aowu. Are you going to let me eat you?”
His two ears twitched in shock. I grabbed them directly, laughing with a snort, “How about cold tossing your fox ears?”
