Chapter 41: Is It So Hard to Give Me a Hug?
“Save… save… save me…” The security guard uncle pleaded weakly for help.
Before I could speak, Wen Ye, with lightning speed, grabbed the woman’s neck, formed a hand seal with one hand, and injected a beam of white light into the crown of her head.
The woman released her mouth, letting out an animalistic scream. Wen Ye tossed her like a rag, throwing her onto the giant screen dozens of meters away.
Her head wobbled twice, her eyes rolled back, and she fainted.
The staff members who came in behind were stunned. I snapped back to reality and urged, “Hurry! Call 120! Someone’s injured! There’s also a man in the last row!”
The staff members froze for a moment, then shakily said a few words into the walkie-talkie and dialed the emergency number.
Before long, a large group of people swarmed in and carried out the security guard, the man, and the woman possessed by the fox spirit.
Worried that Peng Fei might have a concussion, I also had them put her on a stretcher and planned to go to the hospital with the ambulance.
Wen Ye grabbed my wrist, his face clouded with anger, and said coldly, “Le Xiaomai! Who told you to run off alone!”
I was flustered and anxious, my mind a mess. Hearing him say this, an inexplicable fire surged within me.
“You can leave without a word! So I can’t leave, huh? I’m supposed to stay home all day, revolving around you, watching your face, listening to your orders, waiting for some old thing to appear out of nowhere! I can’t have my own social life, huh!” I accused him angrily.
Thinking of my attempt to make peace that evening and waiting anxiously for his message all night, a sour sense of grievance welled up, and tears streamed down my face.
“Young lady, should we handle your situation with your boyfriend first, or go to the hospital in the ambulance?” A staff member asked me awkwardly, rubbing his hands.
“Go to the hospital!”
I shook off Wen Ye’s hand, turned my head, and strode into the elevator with the group, getting into the ambulance.
Le Xiaomai, didn’t the pet store girl say you need to be patient? Why did you lose your temper with him again?
But my tears had a mind of their own, flowing uncontrollably. It wasn’t my fault.
Le Xiaomai, what are you hoping for, anyway?

Peng Fei woke up in a hospital room, her face swollen. After examination, her head was fine.
My scratched hand was bandaged simply. For safety’s sake, I secretly got a rabies vaccine. Who knew if that vixen was carrying any viruses!
“Xiaomai, your eyes are so swollen. This is the first time I’ve seen you cry, hahaha… Looks like I really mean a lot to you.” Peng Fei said with a grin, eating the orange I peeled for her.
I wrinkled my nose and stuffed a piece of orange into her mouth. “Yeah, I was worried sick about you! I called your parents, they’ll be here soon.”
“Ugh, why did you call them? It’s nothing serious, they’re going to worry for nothing! My mom will definitely use this as an excuse to suspend my driver’s license and make me stay home! She wasn’t happy when I bought the car, worried about me driving unsafely,” Peng Fei said, looking troubled.
“Hey, what happened after that? Did they catch that she-demon? There really are demons in this world!”
I selectively told her what happened, automatically cutting out the parts where Wen Ye appeared.
Although there were 360-degree night-vision cameras in the cinema, for some reason they didn’t capture the fox spirit’s tail. It must have been a difference in magnetic fields.
The video initially showed various passionate scenes between the woman and the man. Such things were common in cinemas.
After that, it showed Peng Fei and me fighting with the woman, as well as the woman performing various superhuman feats. Finally, it showed her suddenly going crazy and biting the security guard’s throat, and Wen Ye appearing…
Peng Fei and I didn’t want to cause trouble, so we privately agreed on a story. We only said that the woman suddenly went crazy, was mentally unstable, and provoked and attacked us, so we fought back.
In fact, that’s how the cameras recorded it.
Neither of us mentioned the fox spirit to the police who investigated, because if we did, they wouldn’t believe us and would think Peng Fei and I were crazy.
After cooperating with the police to make a statement, Peng Fei’s parents arrived. Seeing the uncle and aunt scolding and criticizing Peng Fei, but with worry and concern in their eyes, I was extremely envious.
Walking to the hospital entrance, I was looking down to confirm the license plate number of the DiDi (Chinese ride-hailing app) when I suddenly bumped my head into a wall.
Looking up, I met Wen Ye’s downcast gaze, indifferent and with a hint of impatience.
The dull, sour feeling in my chest began to churn again. I said “Sorry” in a low voice, sidestepped around him, and walked towards the hospital gate.
Just as I was about to close the car door, Wen Ye squeezed in, then crossed his arms, closed his eyes, and rested, not even saying a word.
“Young lady, is this your friend? Or…” The driver thought Wen Ye was hitching a ride and asked cautiously.
I reluctantly grunted in agreement.
After experiencing sleep paralysis last night, I was a little scared to sleep alone in the master bedroom, but I was still angry with him. When we got home, I automatically ran to the guest bedroom, planning to lock the door.
“What are you doing!” Before I could close it, Wen Ye lightly raised his arm and pushed the door open, making my arm go numb. I glared at him and shouted.
“Get out.” He stood at the door and ordered unceremoniously.
I stubbornly resisted, “I’m not going out! Go ahead and kill me if you have the guts! I’m your nanny, not sold to your family, a slave with no human rights! I want to sleep now! Don’t bother me!”
His chest rose and fell, as if he was trying hard to suppress his anger. He tilted his head, unwilling to lower his proud head. “Le Xiaomai, if the wound isn’t treated, it will be infected with Yin poison…”
I interrupted him with a shout, “Then just let me die! Anyway, I’m an unwanted, unloved, uncared-for child who’s kicked around like a ball. From the beginning, my coming into this world was a mistake!”
“Now I have to face so many strange things every day… and I have to be humble and try to please everyone. I might as well just… just…” I lowered my head, suppressing my sobs.
But I didn’t want to die. I wanted to live a good life. I wanted to receive even a little bit of love. Was that too much to ask?
After a long while, my forehead touched a wall of flesh. Looking down, my blurred, tearful eyes saw a pair of clean feet, only a few centimeters away from my toes.
My back was encircled by two arms, but they didn’t press down for a long time, just loosely holding me.
I raised my face, covered in snot and tears, and muttered, “Is it so hard to give me a hug?”
Wen Ye was slightly stunned, hesitated for a moment, then lowered the two encircling arms, slowly tightened them, and then put a hand on the back of my head, gently stroking it a couple of times, as if smoothing the fur of a small animal.
I greedily hugged him back, leaned my head against his chest. Thump, thump, thump, that was his beating heart.
He also had a heart, but his heart hadn’t been pulled out from the emotions of its previous owner, it just hadn’t been warmed by me yet.
How could less than a month of getting along compare to three years?
Le Xiaomai, give him some time, let him slowly discover that you’re also good, that you can also take care of him like that lady…
Even, like him.
If only it could always be like this. However, the little animal didn’t understand romance at all and soon let go.
“Had enough of the hug?”
