Chapter 48: The Fox Focused on His Career
Wen Ye shook his head, “The spiritual energy in the human realm is different from that of the Great Wilderness. After being sent here, I wasn’t accustomed to the turbid atmosphere of this world. For the first few decades, I was searching for blessed lands abundant with spiritual energy to cultivate, and had no interest in seeking a partner.”
“Later, after wandering through many places, I finally found a spiritual mountain and beautiful waters in the south, but there were no others of my kind there.”
“After a spirit pearl takes form and one cultivates into human form, to return to the path of the Grand Dao and immortality, one must go to Mount Tai in the east to pay homage, register one’s name with Lord of Mount Tai, and then undergo the final lightning tribulation to ascend and be listed among the immortals.”
“But on the way to Mount Tai, my spirit pearl was stolen. I had no choice but to settle down in West City, hiding and cultivating while searching for my spirit pearl.”
So, this guy is still a virgin?
I suppressed the upward curve of my lips and praised him with heartfelt joy, “So you’re just a fox focused on his career.”
“Go take a shower. I’ll prepare dinner.”
Wen Ye hugged the clothes, took a deep breath, and dove into the bathroom, as nervous as if he were going into battle.
A big guy of nearly six feet and the helplessness unintentionally revealed on his face were truly amusing.
Although this guy could be annoying at times, occasionally certain actions and expressions, especially his pitiful appearance, like a mistreated little wife, always hit my soft spot.
I had thoroughly grasped Wen Ye’s eating habits. Now, I didn’t need to make two separate meals. As long as I avoided the ingredients and strong flavors he disliked, he would eat whatever I made. And if I fed him some fruit after the meal, his eyes would sparkle like stars.
As I was tidying up, the phone rang. Before I could wipe my hands, Wen Ye swiped open my phone.
“Hey, why are you touching my…”
I reached out to grab it, but he dodged my clutches, made a couple of “uh-huh” sounds, and then said, “Send me the address,” before hanging up.
“Your younger brother is coming to West City. Seems like it’s something important,” Wen Ye tossed the phone back into my arms.
“Ah? Xiao Dao? How come he’s here?” I incredulously checked the call history.
Since I left home at the age of ten to live with my great-grandmother, Xiao Dao and I hadn’t seen each other for twelve years, only occasionally making phone calls and liking each other’s posts on social media.
Xiao Dao was three years younger than me. We used to have a good relationship, but even the best relationships couldn’t withstand the erosion of time, and my stepmother’s repeated warnings to “stay away from your sister” and “your sister brings you bad luck.”
What is he coming to me for? Has something happened at home?
What does it matter that we haven’t seen each other for over a decade? Arriving at the high-speed rail station, I spotted Xiao Dao in the crowd at first glance.
The apprehension and nervousness from the journey vanished instantly. Blood ties are truly a miraculous thing.
Xiao Dao had grown into a sunny, athletic young man, dressed like a basketball player, with tanned skin and bulging muscles on his arms, exuding hormones.
In just a moment, he sensed my gaze, paused slightly, flashed a smile, and ran towards me, embracing me tightly.
Just like when he was a kid, he would throw himself into my arms to wheedle, and then I would take him to raid the corner store.
Only back then, his head reached my chest, and now it was the other way around.
“Sis! I missed you so much! I finally get to see you!” Xiao Dao’s voice was low and choked with emotion, hugging me so tightly that my sternum hurt.
My eyes reddened, and I thumped his firm chest muscles, choking back tears, “Missed me so much, then why haven’t you come to see me all this time?”
“It’s so hot! Let go!” I pretended to be angry, but I knew his difficulties.
Xiao Dao hurriedly explained, “I wanted to come find you, but you know our dad’s steel factory went bankrupt, and the family’s been tight on money. Mom kept a tight rein on my allowance, and it wasn’t even enough for a train ticket to great-grandma’s, and then when you went to college, I had even less money to buy a train ticket.”
“After I went to college, I finally had some money from working, so I came to find you… hey, is this my brother-in-law?”
Xiao Dao let go of me and looked behind me.
Wen Ye stood with his arms crossed, his eyes narrowed, staring at us expressionlessly, making my back tingle.
“No, this is my… employer,” I didn’t know how to explain my relationship with Wen Ye for a moment, so I had to tell the truth awkwardly.
“Sis, this is your boss?” Xiao Dao lowered his voice and asked me quietly, “He was the one who answered the phone just now, right? Your boss is dressed so enchantingly, like a movie star, even has long hair.”
“I used to laugh at my roommate for being a sissy with long hair, but it seems like whether you’re effeminate or not depends on your face and temperament…” Xiao Dao kept muttering in my ear.
Wen Ye frowned slightly and said coldly, “Le Xiaomai, what are you dawdling about? Aren’t you going home?”
Xiao Dao stepped forward to greet him, “Hello, boss, I’m Le Xiaomai’s younger brother, Le Xiaodao. Thank you for accompanying my sister to pick me up. What is your honorable surname?”
Wen Ye glanced at him, “Just as talkative as your sister, noisy.”
After speaking, he got into the passenger seat and slammed the car door shut, leaving Xiao Dao standing there, at a loss.
This guy simply doesn’t know how to be considerate.
With a head full of black lines, I quickly explained my current job and Wen Ye’s temperament and personality to Xiao Dao.
When he heard that I was working as a nanny, he almost cried, saying how could I put myself through such hardship.
It wasn’t until he followed me and Wen Ye back home that he shook my arm, yearningly, “Does Boss Wen need a bodyguard?”
I laughed and scolded him for being hopeless and went to the kitchen to make him a bowl of tomato and egg noodles.
“Sis, your cooking is so good! A hundred times better than mom’s.” He ate ravenously, suddenly realizing he had said the wrong thing. He paused his hand movement and looked up at me to see if I was unhappy.
I sat on a high stool, resting my chin on my hand, watching him eat, and smiled, “Eat up.”
Xiao Dao finished the last bite, put down his chopsticks, and wiped his mouth, “Sis, are you still mad at mom?”
I shrugged, “I was a little angry before, but now… I’m not angry anymore.”
I didn’t want to tell Xiao Dao about my background. It wasn’t something glorious. No matter what difficulties my scum of a birth mother had, being a homewrecker is being a homewrecker.
“Tell me, why did you suddenly come to find me? And dressed like this… you didn’t run away from home, did you?” I changed the subject and sized him up. Xiao
