Xu Yi had almost searched every place he could, but found nothing.
As he stepped out of the room, he noticed the room across the hall was locked. Yi Yu tried the door, but it wouldn’t open. Li Gang was already impatient and urged them to leave.
When Li Yuan returned home from school, he noticed there were people in the house. “Dad, Mom, who are they?” Liu Li took slippers from the shoe cabinet and handed them to Li Yuan. “Your sister’s suicide seems strange, the police came to investigate.”
Yi Yu locked eyes with Li Yuan. “Can the room be unlocked? We need to check all the rooms.”
Li Gang sarcastically said, “Is it necessary? It’s been so long.” Xu Yi was furious when he heard a biological father say something like this, and shouted at Li Gang, “How can you say that about your own daughter? I’m going to wake you up, you bastard!”
Yi Yu gestured for Li Xiaoming and Wang Qiang not to intervene, but Li Yuan managed to stop Xu Yi’s fist just before it hit Li Gang’s nose.
Li Gang immediately became concerned when he saw Li Yuan’s nose bleeding. He picked up a broom and was about to hit Xu Yi, shouting, “How dare you hit my son!”
Yi Yu grabbed the broom and broke it in half, “Who gave you the courage to assault a police officer?”
Li Yuan managed to control Li Gang. “Dad, my sister wasn’t like this before. Let the police investigate, she definitely wouldn’t have committed suicide,” Li Yuan’s crying voice filled the room.
Li Gang reluctantly listened to Li Yuan, “You’re still defending her? When she was pregnant outside, did she ever think about us? What did others think of us?”
Liu Li also began to cry. Li Yuan simply went over to comfort her and signaled that the key to the room was under the flowerpot at the door.
After the four of them entered the room, Xu Yi felt a sense of discomfort in his chest. “This room is at least twice as large as the previous one.”
Yi Yu whispered something to Li Xiaoming, and the two of them went out.
Yi Yu began to look around. “You sit and wait.”
Xu Yi quickly recovered, looking at the wall covered with certificates of “Excellent Student” and “Outstanding Class Leader,” sighing, “I didn’t expect her grades to be this good.”
Yi Yu was staring at a row of books on the bookshelf without saying anything. Xu Yi walked over to him, “Did you find something?”
Yi Yu pulled out a book, opened it, and found nothing. However, when he put it back, he noticed dust marks on the shelf next to it, indicating that another book had been there before, but had recently been removed.
Xu Yi saw that Yi Yu was deep in thought, so he began to rummage through the cabinet. The cabinet door had a photo of Li Yuan and Li Xiaoting together. The rest were normal clothes.
Just before they were about to leave, Li Yuan came to see them off. “I apologize on behalf of my dad. His personality has always been like this, I’m really sorry,” Li Yuan said with a 90-degree bow.
Li Xiaoming stopped him, “It’s fine, go back now.” Just as Li Yuan was about to go inside, Xu Yi asked, “Does your family not like your sister?”
Li Yuan, with his back to them, answered, “My grandparents’ generation values sons more than daughters. The moment my sister was born, her status in the family was already decided. So…”
Xu Yi had almost guessed it. “Your parents aren’t fit to be parents. Whether the child is a boy or a girl, they should receive their parents’ love, not be ignored because they’re not the grandchild that the elders want. If she were still alive, I’m sure she wouldn’t want to be born into a family like yours.”
After saying that, Xu Yi left without looking back. When they returned to the dorm, there was no progress, and everyone was silent. Li Xiaoming shouted toward the balcony, “God, tell me the truth!”
Wang Qiang teased, “There’s no god, only system hunters. Fortunately, we didn’t encounter any when we went out.”
Yi Yu gave the others a dismissive gesture and returned to his bed. “Tomorrow, I’ll go to the neighborhood again. You and them go investigate Li Yuan.”
Xu Yi opened his eyes, “I’ll go with you. It’s too dangerous to go alone. And thanks for not stopping me earlier.”
Yi Yu smiled, “If I had stopped you, you probably would’ve gotten angry again.”
Xu Yi stretched his muscles. “By the way, when I said ‘cooperate with the investigation,’ I said it so naturally. I must be cut out for being a cop.”
Yi Yu replied in a voice only he could hear, “Maybe.”
“By the way, how did you get that ID? If it wasn’t for you, we might have been exposed,” Xu Yi leaned on the railing, waiting for Yi Yu to respond.
“That’s our student ID. It seems her mom can’t read.”
“Oh,” Xu Yi replied briefly, ending the conversation.
