The landlady glanced at Zhang Yaowen and, though he seemed like a good person, who could really say for sure? She grabbed Yun Tutu’s hand and whispered a few words of caution, offering to refund the rent she had just received not long ago.
“Auntie, I’ll stayed for a few more days,” Yun Tutu said, not planning to ask for the rent back. “You can just refund the deposit.”
“It’s only been a few days,” the landlady insisted, quickly handling the transaction on her phone to return the payment. “A young girl living away from home needs to be more cautious. Have you told your family about your move?”
Yun Tutu replied, “Not yet, but I’ll tell them soon.”
With a few people helping, and since there weren’t many heavy items, everything was quickly loaded onto the truck.
Fearing that the conversation might turn awkward, Yun Tutu hurriedly left. Little did she know that the landlady would remain worried, checking in on her over the next few days until she was assured that everything was fine. But that’s a story for another time.
As Yun Tutu stood before the standalone villa, she couldn’t help but swallow nervously. It felt like she had just gone from riding a bike to driving a Maserati.
An excited voice from Song Song echoed in her ear, “This place is great! With walls this high, we won’t have to go around the long way. It’ll save a lot of energy.”
“Speaking of energy,” Yun Tutu said, rolling her eyes, “you can’t waste it all. And I’m still stuck on this motorbike. Didn’t you promise to upgrade my ride?”
Song Song replied, “Sure, but first, you need to actually be able to drive a car. Don’t think passing the theory test means you’re automatically an expert.”
Yun Tutu felt a bit sheepish, realizing that she hadn’t even sat behind the wheel yet.
Seeing Zhang Yaowen and the others busy moving things into the villa, she perked up. “But that’s something we can work out. I may not drive, but someone else can!”
Song Song, already knowing her thoughts, replied, “Keep dreaming. Unless you provide me with more energy, there’s no way I can upgrade the car, let alone transport people.”
“Then let’s get on with the tasks!” Yun Tutu said, her spirits lifting. “How’s Emperor Shi Huang doing? You mentioned a new timeline has already been created. We could make a few more trips there.”
“I haven’t picked up any intentions from that side,” Song Song said, somewhat reluctantly. “But your involvement has already rewritten that timeline’s history.”
Yun Tutu, suddenly excited, asked, “Does that mean I don’t have to study that weird language anymore?”
After delivering so many books and seeds to Emperor Shi Huang, she was confident that with his abilities, he could build an unbeatable Qin dynasty.
“Nice try,” Song Song mocked her. “You didn’t give him an immortality elixir, do you think all future rulers won’t be incompetent.”
Yun Tutu sighed, defeated. “Fine, let’s check out the new place then. And see if there’s internet—I’m itching to play some games.”
“You’re just like a teenager addicted to the internet,” Yun Tutu said as she admired the three-story villa. The design, with its blue bricks and red tiles, had a nostalgic, vintage charm.
Entering through the open door, she found herself in a grand hall, its high ceiling accentuated by a row of mahogany furniture, which matched the traditional aesthetic of the exterior.
Zhang Yaowen noticed her standing still and walked over after placing a bag down. “The decor is a bit traditional. If you don’t like it, we can arrange for renovations.”
This villa had been chosen from several options and was actually intended for retired senior officials. It was in a prime location, so it was temporarily repurposed for her use.
“It’s great,” Yun Tutu replied, admiring the style. Recently, she had developed an interest in vintage designs. She even had a qipao packed in one of her boxes—posing for a few pictures in this setting would be perfect.
“All the other rooms have been prepared,” Zhang Yaowen said, though he wasn’t entirely sure what the house looked like inside. He had only received the key earlier and learned that everything had been set up at record speed. The floor had just been cleaned, still glistening with moisture.
“If you need anything else, let us know and we’ll make sure it’s taken care of.”
“No, this is more than enough,” Yun Tutu quickly assured him. She understood that she had already received a lot of help and didn’t want to impose further.
Zhang Yaowen showed her how to reset the door lock’s password and handed her a list of emergency contacts. “Take your time settling in. If anything urgent comes up, call this number. A new partner will come by around five. They’ll call ahead.”
Yun Tutu appreciated the arrangements, which gave her plenty of personal space.
Instead of leaving through the main entrance, Zhang Yaowen led his team to the backyard. In a corner of the wall, there was a newly installed door.
Yun Tutu stood, speechless.
“Don’t worry,” Zhang Yaowen reassured her. “You can lock this door when not in use. It’s just for easier transportation of goods in the future. We’ll make sure everything is well-stocked.”
Yun Tutu nodded numbly. The efficiency was astounding. The wall had barely dried, yet the yard had already been landscaped with fresh grass.
“It’s really nice. Thanks for all your hard work.” Yun Tutu marveled at the situation, feeling more confident. If she ever returned to Emperor Shi Huang’s time, she might even consider bringing him something more advanced…
Once the door was shut, Yun Tutu found herself alone in the large villa and immediately started jumping for joy. She couldn’t believe she finally had a place to call her own in the city—a goal that had once seemed out of reach.
She reminded herself to stay grounded, not to get carried away, and to continue being a responsible citizen.
“Enough with the daydreaming,” Song Song interrupted. “Help me set up the computer and charge it.”
Ignoring the request, Yun Tutu continued exploring the house. “Let’s take our time and enjoy our future home.”
The first floor had a living room, study, dining room, and both a Western and Chinese kitchen. One of the bedrooms on the first floor caught her attention, as it came with an ensuite bathroom. “This room would be perfect for Grandpa and Grandma.”
In the corner were two smaller bedrooms, also equipped with bathrooms, likely intended for housekeepers.
Upstairs, the master bedroom was connected to three guest rooms. Was this house designed for multiple generations to live together?
