Song Song hesitated before replying, “Well, this also benefits you—you’ve made a tidy profit from just a few jobs.”
“We’re partners now, so let’s have an open and honest conversation,” Yun Tutu said, sensing something wasn’t right. The more Song Song avoided a direct answer, the more she suspected it was hiding something.
“Alright, alright, you caught me. I’ll come clean,” Song Song finally admitted. “I didn’t realize it at first, but I discovered something—besides the items you trade, I can also collect energy from the things you bring over and exchange with others.”
“And what about that energy?” Yun Tutu asked, opening her phone to check her energy balance. The measly 1,200 energy points made her suspicious. “Where did all the energy go?”
Song Song was silent for a long moment before reluctantly replying, “I was afraid you wouldn’t handle it well…”
“Oh, thank you so much for looking out for me!” Yun Tutu responded sarcastically. “Now, where’s the rest of the energy?”
“Actually, the energy gained from each trade varies…”
“Swear by your Creator God that you’re telling the whole truth.”
“Why do you have to be so ruthless…” Song Song sighed. “Fine, fine! I’ll transfer it to you.”
Yun Tutu watched as her energy count on the phone began to rise steadily, finally stopping at 13,999 points.
“Is this all of it?” she asked.
“Believe it or don’t!” Song Song retorted before disappearing abruptly.
Yun Tutu wasn’t going to let it off that easily. “Now, let’s talk about upgrades.”
“If you want an upgrade to a van, that’ll cost 10,000 energy points,” Song Song said, clearly trying to steer the conversation away from its previous missteps.
This time, Yun Tutu had ten storage rings, each holding ten cubic meters of space. Her next delivery would be far easier. But had she not caught on, who knew how much more energy Song Song would have siphoned off?
“My current vehicle isn’t useful anymore—upgrade it,” Yun Tutu demanded.
“There’s nothing left to upgrade to,” Song Song mumbled, clearly trying to brush off the request.
Seeing right through Song Song’s evasiveness, Yun Tutu strolled into the next room and yanked the power cord out of the computer.
“Okay, okay! We can negotiate,” Song Song conceded quickly. “What’s your idea?”
“I want to be able to bring passengers.”
“You’ve got to be joking! How are you going to bring people on a motorcycle?”
“Upgrade it to a van, then I can take people with me,” Yun Tutu proposed.
“That’ll still cost 10,000 energy. Do you think energy grows on trees? It’s impossible.”
“Fine, upgrade the vehicle first, and when I level up, I’ll ask for the passenger upgrade.”
Yun Tutu opened her phone:
Song Song was still grumbling, “Don’t push your luck. I’ll stop rushing you to come back from missions next time if that’s what you want.”
Yun Tutu wasn’t moved. “I feel scared and unsafe when I’m alone in unfamiliar places.”
This wasn’t working either. Song Song had never been in such a difficult position before. But now, its weak point was in Yun Tutu’s hands. Reluctantly, Song Song caved, “Fine, I’ll upgrade the vehicle for now. Once you level up, you can bring people with you, but you’ll have to cover the energy costs yourself.”
Yun Tutu’s lips curved into a smile. It’s just energy, after all. With her delivery capacity increased tenfold, gathering energy would be a breeze.
“Alright, no problem. Upgrade my vehicle now. Oh, and how much space will the new one have?”
“Twenty cubic meters,” Song Song replied weakly, sounding utterly defeated. “This is a huge loss for me today.”
“That’ll do. Go ahead with the upgrade.” Yun Tutu felt that doing a few more jobs with her new setup wouldn’t be so bad. It wouldn’t be long before she’d no longer have to face things alone.
Hearing excited shouts from downstairs, Yun Tutu stepped onto the balcony but couldn’t see anything because of the tent that had been set up below. Still, she could imagine how shocked everyone must have been when the motorcycle suddenly transformed into a van.
As she headed downstairs, she met Zhang Yang halfway up the stairs, clearly excited.
“Tutu! The motorcycle turned into a van!” Zhang Yang exclaimed with enthusiasm. She had driven all sorts of vehicles before, and a van would be easy for her to handle.
Yun Tutu nodded. “Yep, it’s upgraded. Now it has 20 cubic meters of space. We can bring more stuff next time.”
Song Song grumbled in the background, “You’ll regret this later…”
Unaware of Song Song’s complaints, Yun Tutu cheerfully admired her new ride. Even though it was just an ordinary van, it was still her first vehicle. She couldn’t wait to take it for a spin.
Sitting in the driver’s seat, she was about to start the engine but suddenly stopped. “Wait, I don’t even have a driver’s license.”
“I’ll take you for a spin!” Zhang Yang offered, rubbing her hands together. She had driven far more complex vehicles before, so this would be a piece of cake.
Yun Tutu immediately stepped aside. “Alright, let’s head to the practice lot. I need to get used to driving it.”
Just as Zhang Yang was about to climb into the driver’s seat, she was stopped by an invisible force and couldn’t get in.
“Tutu, I can’t even touch the car!” Zhang Yang said, frustrated. This was the only vehicle she couldn’t get her hands on.
Yun Tutu sighed. “…”
“Hey, Sis,” Yun Chuan’s voice came over the phone, though it sounded like he was trying to keep quiet.
“Yun Chuan, are you sneaking around with Dad’s phone to play games again?” Yun Tutu immediately saw through him.
Caught red-handed, Yun Chuan sounded nervous. “N-no! I’m just borrowing Dad’s phone to look up some pinyin.”
“Why not use a dictionary?” Yun Tutu didn’t believe him for a second. If that were true, why did he sound so guilty?
“It’s slower with a dictionary. Anyway, are you calling to talk to Dad?” Yun Chuan quickly changed the subject, secretly relieved that his sister wasn’t at home, or his ears would’ve been in trouble.
“Why can’t I talk to you? It’s been ages since we last chatted,” Yun Tutu replied, her tone full of mock annoyance. She had tried calling several times before, but she hadn’t been able to catch the little rascal.
“Well, that’s because I don’t have a phone,” Yun Chuan replied, then suddenly sounded excited. “By the way, Sis, I heard you found a job, and you’re earning a lot, right?”
“Who told you that?”
“Come on, Sis, Mom and Dad already said so. Plus, I saw your work contract.”
“Oh? So you can read contracts now? Are you sure you know that many words?”
“Don’t underestimate me! I’m going into second grade next term,” he said proudly. “I got perfect scores on my finals! Sis, don’t you think I deserve a reward?”
“Not bad at all. So, what do you want? Another model car or some building blocks?” Yun Tutu teased, remembering the piles of toys her little brother already had.
“Could I ask for something different this time?”
Yun Tutu raised an eyebrow. “Oh? Got tired of those already? What do you have your eyes on now?”
