Bai Ying continued to pretend to take pictures of the moon. The man beside her hadn’t left yet, still standing silently like a towering mountain next to her.
She chatted with him comfortably: “When did you come here?”
Jiang Mocheng’s gaze swept over her camera without a trace, his voice was low, but in the quiet snowy night, it was exceptionally clear.
“Yesterday.”
Bai Ying became more interested. He really was a newcomer among newcomers, no wonder he looked completely unfamiliar when he saw her.
“Since it’s for work, it’s better to delete the irrelevant photos.”
“It’s okay.”
Bai Ying’s gaze also casually swept over his eyebrows and nose, her smile on her face even sweeter, “Miss Bai won’t mind, and since you’re new here, maybe she hasn’t seen you yet.”
Jiang Mocheng hummed in response. He wished he could’ve deleted those pictures and stopped her from taking more. But he could not stop her at this moment. If the other party was a man, he could think of other ways, but standing in front of him was a frail woman who could be broken with one hand, and he was not sure what to do.
“Is it only you who’s new here?” Bai Ying asked again.
“There are two more.”
Bai Ying actually rarely noticed the bodyguards of the Shen residence and basically didn’t talk to them.
Meeting them late at night today was really a coincidence, which made her think of the words “right time, right place, right people.” If she hadn’t come out for a breath of fresh air, if she had met someone else, then nothing would have happened.
Jiang Mocheng thought of several plans in his head.
First, knock her out, delete the photos, and leave. He immediately rejected it; he had never laid hands on a woman, and it was really hard to control the strength, and she was an innocent passerby. It would be unacceptable for her to suffer irreversible harm because of him. Especially since it was so quiet tonight and the temperature was so low that if she fainted here, she would have frozen into a block of ice by the time she was found.
Second, bribe her with money. He frowned and rejected the idea again. Going about it like this would almost blatantly make himself memorable. He looked at her deeply, intending to remember her appearance, and then think of other ways later.
This look, however, made him pause for a moment.
Bai Ying looked at him with a smile, and in this silent moment, the moonlight as thin as frost shone on her already pale and jade-like face, and he finally took the time to look at her appearance.
Perhaps because she was cold, her chin was buried in her scarf, her black hair fell on her shoulders, and her bright and clear eyes focused on him, with a hint of shyness. Young and green, she looked like a student who had just graduated, with an innocence that had not yet been tainted by the world.
“Are you leaving?” She asked softly.
Jiang Mocheng shifted his gaze and nodded.
“Then, goodbye~” She smiled, tilted her head, and waved at him.
The two left the pavilion one after the other. Jiang Mocheng, with his keen senses, had already heard the light footsteps on the snow behind him. He put aside his thoughts and continued to think about how to resolve this matter.
Distracted, he naturally did not notice that he had reached a fork in the road. Turning left was the annex building and turning right was the main building. Jiang family’s interior was almost the same. He lifted his foot to the right out of habit, and before he had taken a few steps, his back was hit by someone.
His eyes quickly regained their composure and he turned his head back fiercely. This cold and stern look seemed to have frightened the unguarded woman. Bai Ying was embarrassed, her palm still covered with snowflakes from making a snowball. She had ran up quickly and her cheeks slightly red, whether from fright or cold.
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I wanted to remind you that you went the wrong way but you walked too fast. I couldn’t catch up…”
“This place is strictly managed, and loud noises at night will be reprimanded.”
“Did it hurt when it hit you?”
Jiang Mocheng came back to his senses. Her strength was small, and the snowball she made was also small; he hardly felt anything.
He said in a deep voice, “It’s nothing.”
After thinking for a while, he decided to reassure her and added, “Thanks.”
Only then did Bai Ying start to smile, and she reminded him in a low, kind voice, “Don’t go the wrong way next time, the butler might scold you if he finds out.”
“Thank you.”
…
Bai Ying found a new amusement, and she woke up in a good mood the next day.
She used to roam around the house, but now she tried to avoid going out as much as possible, fearing that if she accidentally ran into the new bodyguard, the act could not go on.
She had spent a whole year on Shen Jin, but he still seemed clueless, which was truly disheartening. She concluded that he was clueless, which was much easier for her to accept than admitting that she had never touched Shen Jin’s heart.
The relationship between men and women is just that, and she had spent more thought on it this year. She was already exhausted and needed a good rest, so the only solution was to find a man to relieve her boredom.
For the next three nights, the two of them “coincidentally” met in the garden pavilion, and it seemed to have become a habit unconsciously.
Dinner had just passed, and Bai Ying was already excitedly choosing the clothes she would wear for the meeting tonight. She was glad she hadn’t thrown away her old clothes.
After rummaging through the box, she put on a thin coat, wrapped an old scarf around her, and stood in front of the mirror for a turn, feeling a bit dazed. Now, thinking back on the past, it felt like an experience from a previous life.
Bai Ying was abandoned by her biological parents just a few days after she was born.
At the age of three, her cherubic appearance attracted many childless couples, and one couple adopted her. She indeed lived a few good years as an only child, but at the age of eight, her adoptive mother unexpectedly became pregnant, and after her brother was born, her adoptive parents, who were ordinary workers, faced great pressure with the addition of another family member. When her brother was one year old, her adoptive parents sent her to another family.
Her new adoptive mother was a divorced woman, abandoned by her husband because she couldn’t bear children. The adoptive mother had suffered a lot and was somewhat eccentric, but Bai Ying was still grateful to her for allowing her to attend university steadily. This poor woman passed away from a serious illness before she could see any return, and thus, Bai Ying was left without any relatives in this world.
Shen Jin thought their meeting was accidental, but it was not; it was her carefully crafted plan. When she first tasted the sweetness of being Shen Jin’s girlfriend, she decided to cling to it for life. But she overlooked one thing: she was a person, a person with emotions and desires, a person with greed.
She sat in front of the dressing table, picked up the comb, and combed her hair while falling into deep thought.
Meanwhile, Jiang Mocheng was also looking down at his watch. With Shen Jin away, the few bodyguards left in the mansion had a lot of free time. After nightfall, someone came with a bottle of wine, and they began to drink merrily.
“You’re on night duty again today.”
One bodyguard, relying on his seniority, bumped into Jiang Mocheng with a grin.
Jiang Mocheng nodded indifferently, and the other bodyguards found him even more agreeable. One said, “This winter is really cold, why doesn’t our annex have floor heating like the main building?”
“You just said it’s an annex.”
Bodyguard A threw a peanut into his mouth, “If it’s renovated later, maybe it can be installed.”
“Renovation?”
“Yes.”
Bodyguard A laughed, “If Mr. Shen has a wedding, everything inside and out will definitely be renovated.”
“Really? That’s great, but when will Mr. Shen and Miss Bai have their wedding?”
“Mr. Shen is particular.”
Bodyguard A lowered his voice, “Actually, the old lady urged them before she passed away. Now that the old lady is gone, given Mr. Shen’s character, it will be at least two or three years before it happens.”
“That’s a long wait, but given Mr. Shen’s care for Miss Bai, the wedding will definitely be very grand, and it will surely take a few years to prepare. Just talking about this house, renovation is not a small matter, it will take at least a year, right?”
Jiang Mocheng listened quietly; he usually didn’t participate in any discussions.
Not long ago, Shen Jin sent people to his Jiang family’s home to stay for several months secretly. If it hadn’t been discovered in time, important documents might have been stolen. Now, it was just a matter of tit for tat.
However, there was a tricky issue—the woman’s camera contained his photo.
If it fell into Shen Jin’s hands and then was published in the newspapers…
Thinking of his father, he couldn’t help but clench his jaw.
