Shi Sheng looked at himself in the front camera of his phone. He had fair skin, didn’t look anything like Lu Lin, who exuded boyfriend vibes. His sandy-colored hair was curly and messy, his lips were a pale pink, either naturally or due to his condition, they were thin.
The doctor said he didn’t even remember what he looked like, which was quite serious. But Lu Lin said it was fine like this, that he looked much more obedient.
Obedient? Shi Sheng felt annoyed listening to that. Whether he had a boyfriend or not wasn’t certain. Who knows, maybe Lu Lin was just fish number thirteen in his pond.
The snoring from the next bed finally stopped. It seemed like they were taken out for some examination. Shi Sheng grabbed his phone and started listening to cat ear FM, feeling drowsy. He thought about asking for a single room when Lu Lin came back.
“Shi Sheng?”
“Mmm…” He responded softly, falling into a deeper sleep.
Lu Yin had just come in and found Shi Sheng asleep. She thought to herself, what a shame, this kid was supposed to be scared alone in the hospital room. It was rare for her to go out for a stroll with her boyfriend, only to be called back urgently by her older brother, and yet here he was sleeping peacefully.
“I told Shi Sheng that I’m his boyfriend. Keep it on the down-low.”
“What the heck, ge, don’t you have a conscience?” Lu Yin shouted, “He’s always treated you like a brother. Aren’t you afraid he’ll remember and beat you up?”
“Have you ever seen a kitten scratching someone painfully?” Lu Lin chuckled softly on the phone, “Enough talk, hurry back and take care of him.”
“Payment, payment—”
“It’s been transferred.”
She hung up the phone, quite satisfied with the five hundred yuan she received via WeChat, deciding to give up shopping and return to the hospital.
Back in the ward, Lu Yin sat down beside Shi Sheng, casually peeling and eating an apple with her legs crossed.
Shi Sheng slept uneasily in his dreams. Sometimes, he dreamed of hiding in a corner covered with icy tiles, with many people rushing towards him. He kept trying to dodge, struggling, until someone pulled him up and ran with him in the darkness.
But suddenly, a car came crashing towards them, and he trembled, rolling on the ground in his dream. On the bed, he curled up uneasily, feeling pain everywhere.
The bizarre dreams intertwined and shattered, overlapping fragmented images. When Lu Lin came in, he saw Shi Sheng covered in cold sweat, trembling on the bed, and then glanced faintly at Lu Yin, who had been busy playing with her phone earlier.
Lu Yin felt inexplicably guilty.
He bent down and gently wiped the cold sweat from Shi Sheng’s forehead, and Shi Sheng trembled again, curling up tighter. Lu Lin’s hand hovered in the air and could only pat his head slowly, as if petting a little cat at home.
“Shi Sheng? Wake up, it’s time to eat.”
His voice was low and deep.
Shi Sheng fell into a warm embrace, still running endlessly in the darkness in his dream. However, the fear and anxiety were fading rapidly, and a faint light appeared in the distance, growing brighter and brighter until a hand reached through the light, grabbing his hand.
“Shi Sheng.”
“Hmm…”
He squinted and opened his eyes to see Lu Lin magnified before him. His head was throbbing severely, and his eyelids felt heavy, making it difficult to open.
“You’ve slept too long. It’s already half past seven in the evening.”
Lu Lin breathed a sigh of relief when he saw Shi Sheng wake up. He took out his phone from his hand and glanced at it, finding two missed calls from delivery drivers and a text message saying that the delivery was left at the front desk on the first floor.
“I… forgot to switch to ring mode.” Shi Sheng squinted, resting his head on Lu Lin’s palm. “I’ll remember next time.”
“It’s okay.”
Feeling a bit more awake, he was helped to sit up by Lu Lin, only to notice that Lu Lin seemed quite exhausted, with a hint of sweat odor on him.
Lu Lin gently touched the marks left on Shi Sheng’s face from sleeping. “Hungry?”
“A bit.”
Lu Lin turned to call Lu Yin. “Ah Yin, get some porridge from the front desk and see if it’s still warm.”
Lu Yin: “…”
Shi Sheng had initially wanted to say it wasn’t necessary, but considering he had difficulty even getting out of bed, he figured he might as well trouble one of the Lu siblings. Was his social circle so poor that only Lu Lin had visited him in the hospital since he woke up?
Lu Lin glanced at him with lowered eyes, guessing what he was thinking.
“I know you don’t like to trouble others, but it’ll take time for you to recover. Your hands don’t have any major injuries, but your leg is fractured and needs time to heal. You also have a few stitches on your head…”
“I have stitches on my head?” Shi Sheng’s attention was drawn, and he couldn’t see anything with the bandage wrapped around his head. “Where are they? I hope I’m not half bald now.”
“…Not at all.” What was this kid thinking?
Lu Lin picked up an apple and peeled it absentmindedly. “You were asleep in the afternoon. Didn’t your studio colleagues come to see you?”
“I don’t know, I just woke up.” Shi Sheng shook his head, eyeing the apple in Lu Lin’s hand longingly, remembering the work group chat on WeChat. “Radio dramas and script killings, I listened to a lot this afternoon. I’m quite good at it.”
Shi Sheng’s voice was indeed very pleasant, like a gem falling on a jade plate, like sunshine, inherently cheerful. The voice of a newly awakened lazy youth was hoarse and enticing.
Lu Lin raised his head and casually glanced at him. “Hmm, you did a pretty good job with that bed scene.”
“What?!”
“Haven’t heard?” Lu Lin leaned closer, propping his elbow on the pillow with an apple slice on it, extending it towards Shi Sheng. “You even sent me a copy, proudly asking me how the voice acting sounded.”
Shi Sheng’s pupils trembled for a moment, beginning to search for this memory in his empty mind. Sure enough, he had no recollection at all, but… why did he feel like this was something he could do?
“Too bad you don’t remember,” with his elbow sinking into the pillow, Lu Lin teasingly whispered, “I was… hard all night.”
Warm breath escaped his lips, and he watched as Shi Sheng’s face gradually turn red, from his cheeks to his ears. The apple he handed over eventually made its way into his own mouth. He didn’t expect this guy to have such thin skin even after losing his memory.
Shi Sheng hugged the blanket and curled up, blinking nervously.
At that moment, someone knocked on the door of the ward, and Lu Yin walked in with them.
“Hello, I’m Wu Nan er from the Ruti Studio, here to visit Shi Sheng.”
