“How could you be so cruel!”
Wu Dachang’s face turned red with anger as he clenched his fists and glared at the woman in fury.
The woman immediately looked displeased. “Husband, are you taking someone else’s side now? I’m carrying your child, and instead of standing by me, you’re siding with someone else?”
As she spoke, she deliberately puffed out her stomach for emphasis.
Seeing her gesture, Wu Dachang’s expression shifted, and veins bulged on his neck.
“Serves him right. Wu Dachang never should’ve gotten involved with Candy in the first place. Now look at the mess—his daughter and mistress at odds, and the household in chaos,” someone whispered.
“Exactly. I still can’t figure out what Wu Dachang sees in Candy. If you compare her to Shuya, the only thing she has over her is youth. She doesn’t come close in looks, figure, or education.”
Hearing the murmurs among the other law firm staff, Gu Xicao finally pieced together the situation. So, the pregnant woman was Candy, while the woman in the elevator was Wu Dachang’s ex-wife.
Shuya spoke up firmly, “What do you mean ‘someone else’? Even though we’re divorced, Xiaodie is still his daughter. You hit Xiaodie—don’t you think you should apologize?”
Candy rolled her eyes, casually examining her freshly manicured nails. Glancing at Wu Dachang, she sneered, “Husband, do I really need to apologize? I was startled earlier, and I’m still feeling unwell. You know how I get when I’m upset—I tend to do things that make others unhappy too.”
Wu Dachang’s face turned a mix of green and red at her words.
Shuya’s disappointment deepened as she looked at him, her gaze filled with growing disillusionment.
Standing up with Xiaodie, she said coldly, “Wu Dachang, I always thought that even though we’re divorced, you still cared for Xiaodie. I never expected you to be this kind of person. Fine. From now on, I won’t let Xiaodie bother you anymore. I wish you and your beloved wife eternal happiness!”
After saying this, Shuya pulled Xiaodie along, ready to leave.
Candy smirked triumphantly, her lips curling into a pleased smile.
She had succeeded. She’d long been annoyed by Shuya and her daughter. Even after the divorce, they didn’t know their place—especially Xiaodie, that little pest, constantly clinging to Wu Dachang and calling him “Daddy.”
“Wife!” Wu Dachang panicked as Shuya led their daughter away. He hurried forward, grabbing her hand. “Wife, please listen to me!”
“Let go!” Shuya shook his hand off fiercely, her tear-filled eyes glaring at him with utter disappointment. “I am no longer your wife, and Xiaodie is no longer your daughter. Wu Dachang, have you forgotten that we’re divorced?”
“Wife…”
Wu Dachang’s mouth opened, but his words caught in his throat. His hands trembled slightly, his heart twisting in pain, but he didn’t know what to say.
Gu Xicao, observing the scene and eating the fresh melon, cleared her throat and spoke up with feigned curiosity. “Lawyer Wu, it seems you still care about your ex-wife and daughter. Why did you even get divorced in the first place?”
Hearing Gu Xicao’s voice, Candy turned her gaze toward her.
As she stared at Gu Xicao, Candy squinted slightly. There was something familiar about this young woman, though she couldn’t quite place it.
But familiarity didn’t stop her from firing back. “Who the hell are you, you little tramp? What business is it of yours?”
“Mrs. Wu, I suggest you speak with more respect,” interjected a male lawyer who had finally had enough of Candy’s behavior. He stepped forward to interrupt the conversation, addressing her in a stern tone. “This young lady is an esteemed guest of Lawyer Wu. You have no right to insult her.”
His words were righteous, and his glance toward Candy was filled with disdain.
Candy’s expression flickered nervously when she saw him intervene. “Lawyer Lin, what’s gotten into you today? Playing protector? Is this your girlfriend or something?”
“If you don’t know how to speak properly, keep your mouth shut!” Wu Dachang snapped, his anger finally boiling over. He spat the words through clenched teeth, glaring at Candy.
Candy’s face darkened, and she shot a venomous glare at Wu Dachang. “How dare you speak to me like that? Have you forgotten that I have something on you…”
“Candy!” Lawyer Lin’s sharp voice cut her off before she could finish.
His icy glare silenced Candy instantly, leaving her too intimidated to continue.
Gu Xicao, however, caught every interaction between the two with clarity.
If she hadn’t known better, she might never have guessed the deeper connection between them.
“Lawyer Lin, why did you stop Candy from finishing her sentence?” Gu Xicao asked, crossing her arms and tilting her head curiously. “Now I’m intrigued—what exactly does Candy have? Could it be something compromising about Lawyer Wu?”
Her sudden remark sent shockwaves through the room.
Wu Dachang and Lawyer Lin’s expressions instantly stiffened, their reactions a mix of panic and disbelief.
“Miss Gu, please don’t joke about such things. It’s not amusing,” Wu Dachang said hurriedly, his voice tinged with unease.
“I’m not joking.”
Gu Xicao held up her hand solemnly. “Allow me to formally introduce myself—I am a fortune teller, and everything I say is the absolute truth.”
“A fortune teller?”
“Like those street-side ones?”
The colleagues began murmuring among themselves.
Suddenly, someone clapped their hands, drawing everyone’s attention. That person quickly dug out a newspaper from a drawer. “Wait, no wonder I thought Miss Gu looked familiar! She was in the news for her accurate fortune-telling. She solved that Baiyun Temple case! And also helped the Toy King Cai Yongcheng find his son through divination!”
Everyone immediately crowded around to check the newspaper. Then, looking back at Gu Xicao, they confirmed she was indeed the same person.
“You… you’re a fortune teller?” Wu Dachang asked, startled.
Gu Xicao glanced at Gu Yueluo. The latter smiled and said, “I only introduced her as my friend and didn’t mention her profession. I assumed you already knew, Lawyer Wu.”
“Fortune-telling? Isn’t that just a scam?”
Candy sneered, her eyes filled with disdain. She scanned Gu Xicao’s modest outfit and mocked, “Just look at you. With clothes like that, it’s clear you’ve got no skills. This is none of your business, so why don’t you leave?”
Had Candy spoken more politely, Gu Xicao might have let it slide. But given her tone, Gu Xicao had no intention of showing mercy.
“Miss Deng, if you think I’m a fraud, then consider my words a joke. But I must say, I’m quite impressed with your and Lawyer Lin’s handiwork.”
Candy and Lawyer Lin both froze in place.
Lawyer Lin’s heart raced as he forced a smile. “Miss Gu, I don’t understand what you’re saying.”
“Don’t understand?”
Gu Xicao’s gaze shifted between them. “That shouldn’t be the case. You two should understand perfectly. Lawyer Lin, you’re quite skilled—managing to get a fraud like Miss Deng into the firm and tricking Lawyer Wu into believing he assaulted her while drunk. But in reality, no such thing ever happened.”
Her words caused an uproar.
Gu Yueluo, accustomed to shocking revelations, remained calm despite her surprise. But Wu Dachang, Candy, Lawyer Lin, and the others were utterly dumbfounded.
“Assault?” Shuya stared at Wu Dachang in shock. “Is that why you suddenly insisted on divorcing me?”
Wu Dachang tugged at his hair in frustration and admitted, “Yes. It was my fault. I shouldn’t have drunk so much, and then… and then…”
“Lawyer Wu, did you not hear me clearly?” Gu Xicao interrupted. “I’m saying that you and your current wife never had any intimate contact. Do you understand?”
Wu Dachang froze, his face pale. His initial reaction was one of disbelief, but then a glimmer of hope emerged. “But… but there’s a recording. I saw the video. It showed…”
He trailed off, visibly pained at the memory.
Back then, seeing that footage made him feel as though his world had collapsed. Without that recording, he would never have believed Candy’s story about what supposedly happened while he was drunk.
“That’s right! I have the recording. It’s irrefutable proof that he assaulted me!”
Candy, momentarily panicked, regained her composure. A smug expression returned to her face.
“Oh, you mean that video you photoshopped using editing software?” Gu Xicao asked nonchalantly.
“Editing? What does that mean?” Shuya’s eyes sparkled with hope as she looked at Gu Xicao.
Their marriage had been fine, and then suddenly, her husband insisted on divorce. His determination led her to believe he had fallen out of love. Though heartbroken, she had agreed. But now that she learned there was more to the story, she felt a surge of determination to uncover the truth.
Lawyer Lin’s face turned ashen.
Gu Xicao turned her attention to him. “Lawyer Lin, care to explain? You should be quite familiar with editing software.”
“I… I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he stammered, feigning nonchalance. “This has nothing to do with me. But you, accusing me of conspiring with Candy to frame Lawyer Wu? Ridiculous. You must be unwell.”
“Lawyer Lin, you’re truly stubborn,” Gu Xicao sighed, shaking her head. “Do you think that just because editing software is primarily available in the U.S. and not widely known here in Hong Kong, the police wouldn’t detect the inconsistencies? Every action leaves traces. For example, the night you all got drunk together—how could a woman like Candy have carried Lawyer Wu to a hotel on her own? I’m sure the hotel’s doorman or reception staff would remember something.”
As Lawyer Lin’s face grew paler, Gu Xicao’s lips curled into a smirk. “Also, there’s the matter of the massive gambling debt you incurred in the U.S. earlier this year. You lost one million in Las Vegas, didn’t you? That’s the very reason you and Miss Deng orchestrated this elaborate scheme.”
Thud.
Lawyer Lin collapsed onto the floor, his face devoid of color. “How… how do you know all this? Did you investigate me?”
“I don’t have that kind of time.” Gu Xicao’s tone was indifferent. “Everything I’ve said? I divined it. Lawyer Lin, Miss Deng—if you didn’t want anyone to know, you shouldn’t have done it in the first place.”
