Chapter 7 Water Conducts Electricity, A Match Made in Heaven

Pei Linlang suddenly came to her senses and fumbled around in her pants pocket, then her expression fell. “I think I left my phone at the gas station.”

Pei Yan narrowed his eyes. His instincts told him things weren’t as simple as Lin Yu had explained, but he didn’t say anything.

Everyone has secrets. But if one insists on digging too deeply, that would be crossing a line.

Pei Linlang turned her hopeful gaze toward Pei Yan.

Pei Yan shook his head. “I probably left my phone at the gas station too.”

Lin Yu steered the wheel with one hand, unzipped her tracksuit jacket, and pulled out the phone from her pocket with the other before handing it back.

“The unlock code is six sixes. You can check online.”

She had already deleted all bank deduction texts and set startup passwords for her photo album and other important apps, so she handed it over without hesitation.

Once the network collapsed, phones were useless in the apocalypse—at best, just a source of distraction. Still, Lin Yu had downloaded a lot of novels and TV shows onto her phone and tablet in advance, intending to watch them when boredom struck later.

Since Pei Linlang lost her phone, she and Pei Yan were in complete darkness, with all their information coming only from Lin Yu. Now that they had a way to access the outside world, they couldn’t refuse.

Just as Pei Linlang unlocked the phone, a call came in from a contact named “Bai Yanyan.”

The phone was on silent mode. Pei Linlang raised her eyes to Lin Yu and waved the phone. “Sister Lin Yu, a call from Bai Yanyan—should I answer it?”

Bai Yanyan?

Still alive?

Lin Yu had no desire to know why Bai Yanyan was calling, nor did she want to hear her voice. She said coldly, “Don’t answer.”

Pei Linlang nodded and didn’t think much of it, assuming this Bai Yanyan was just someone Lin Yu disliked. After she hung up, the browser push notifications flooded the screen.

Checking the internet, they found Longguo in complete chaos. Zombies eating people were appearing everywhere. Many ordinary people were calling the police for rescue, but even police stations had zombies now and couldn’t handle it all.

That “Apocalypse Survival Guide” had already been suppressed by the authorities, but someone had taken screenshots. The internet was now full of these images, along with desperate cries for help—exactly as Lin Yu had described.

The siblings stayed silent for a long moment before Pei Linlang handed the phone back.

Pei Yan said calmly, “So what we should do now is… gather supplies, right?”

She nodded. “Yes. That’s where we’re heading—downtown.”

Lin Yu didn’t mention separating from them. Now that Pei Yan was awake, their abilities could help a lot. And besides, Pei Yan was destined to be the future leader of a base—she’d be a fool not to hold onto such a strong ally.

Pei Yan studied her quietly for a while, then, almost against his own will, said, “To thank you for saving our lives, Lin Yu, let’s work together.”

“Sure,” Lin Yu agreed readily.

“Since we’re cooperating, I’ll be upfront. I awakened both a water ability and a spatial ability. I’ll only take ten percent of the supplies we gather.”

Her spatial ability had probably been exposed back at the gas station. Lin Yu had never intended to hide it anyway. Better to admit it now than arouse suspicion later.

Water ability?

Pei Linlang’s eyes widened. She glanced at her brother, then at Lin Yu.

Water conducts electricity… Did that mean the two of them were literally a perfect match?

Pei Yan frowned. “Ten percent is too little.”

Pei Linlang shook off her wandering thoughts and quickly chimed in. “Yes, too little! Sister Lin Yu, please reconsider.”

Lin Yu shook her head. “Listen to me first. I’ll take twenty percent of supplies like food, clothes, weapons, and so on. The condition is that the final blow to zombies must be mine, and I’ll take fifty percent of the zombie crystal cores.”

If Sister Lin Yu hadn’t dealt with the gas station zombies, Pei Linlang doubted her own ability would have lasted until her brother woke up. Without Lin Yu, she’d probably already be dead.

For a life-saving benefactor, she was naturally all too willing to accept anything Lin Yu said.

“No problem!”

But Pei Yan’s eyes still showed disagreement. “It’s hard to split the other half between me and Linlang. Why don’t you take sixty percent of the crystal cores instead?”

Lin Yu hadn’t expected this pleasant surprise but didn’t refuse.

After all, the system had told her crystal cores were a hard requirement for expanding farmland. On top of that, she needed them for upgrades. Her demand for cores was naturally huge.

Once the terms were settled, Lin Yu rolled up the windows and pressed harder on the accelerator.

Knowing there was a tough fight ahead, Pei Yan ate some food, drank water, then leaned back and closed his eyes to rest.

Pei Linlang also shut her eyes to sleep.

The closer they got to the city, the more cars blocked the road. The highway was crammed with vehicles, some colliding and smoking, a few on the verge of exploding. Pei Linlang watched with her heart in her throat.

Zombies were also feasting on the road, further blocking their way into the city.

Lin Yu glanced at the back seat. “Are you rested?”

Pei Yan gave a soft “mm.”

Lin Yu stopped the car decisively, swung her long legs over to the passenger seat, and said:

“You drive. Don’t stop for zombies or cars. Just ram through. I’ll take care of moving the cars out of the way into my space before you hit them.”

Pei Yan nodded, leaned forward, slid into the driver’s seat, and smoothly started the engine.

What followed shocked Pei Linlang to her core.

The roar of the Hummer’s engine drew the attention of the zombies gnawing at the roadside. One by one, they stopped eating and turned to stare at the vehicle in unison.

The sight made her skin crawl. She almost screamed but barely held it in.

Without the slightest hesitation, Pei Yan drove straight into the snarling zombies.

Ahead, more than a dozen burning cars blocked the road. Without slowing, they’d surely crash and trigger an explosion.

Pei Linlang’s heart nearly burst out of her chest. She swore she’d never felt it beat so fast in her life.

Just as the vehicle was about to smash into the cars, the obstacles vanished in an instant, leaving only stunned zombies. By the time they realized what had happened, they were already flying several meters from the impact.

Even movies wouldn’t dare stage something this outrageous!

Pei Linlang broke out in a cold sweat, panting heavily, drenched as if she’d been pulled from water.

But she had to admit—the way Pei Yan and Lin Yu coordinated was flawless. If even one link in the chain had failed, the result would have been a fatal crash.

In truth, Lin Yu could have chosen a safer, steadier way into the city. But stopping to clear zombies and cars would have cost precious time.

It had only been a short while since the apocalypse began, yet Lin Yu could already see the change. The zombies, stiff and sluggish at first, were starting to move more fluidly. They could now perform simple actions, and their speed had increased.

Fall behind once, and you’ll fall behind step after step.

If they wasted time just entering the city, by the time they gathered supplies and tried to leave, the zombies would already have evolved into something far more terrifying.

She had no choice but to gamble. Thankfully, Pei Yan trusted her completely, and their teamwork was seamless.
