Chapter 9 Linlang, You Do It
Lin Yu gave a quiet “mm.” “Now’s not the time to talk about this. We need to hurry and gather supplies.”
She paused, then added, “But I hope what happened just now will be the first and last time.”
After saying this, Lin Yu stepped out of the alley.
Pei Linlang easily understood—if there was a next time, Sister Lin Yu might very well part ways with them. That was something she could never accept. And besides, the incident earlier had already rung alarm bells for her.
If not for Sister Lin Yu and her brother Pei Yan, she would surely have died.
Just like Sister Lin Yu had said, sometimes kindness wasn’t appreciated by others.
Swallowing back her tears, Pei Linlang quickly pulled her brother along and chased after Lin Yu. “I promise there won’t be a next time. From now on, I’ll listen to Brother and Sister Lin Yu in everything.”
Pei Yan grew thoughtful. Lin Yu looked to be only around twenty years old. Yet the very moment the apocalypse began, she had dared to leave home, walking calmly through a city swarming with zombies. Whether it was her decisiveness when saving Linlang or her ruthless efficiency in killing zombies, none of it matched what you would expect of a girl her age.
She was too calm.
That was Pei Yan’s second impression of Lin Yu.
He gave a soft chuckle, lowered his lashes, and caught up.
“Sorry. I’ll keep a close watch on Linlang.”
Lin Yu gave a slight nod, leading the siblings through several turns in the alley until they were far from the jammed main road of Linchuan City.
Though they had entered the city, the place Lin Yu wanted to go was still far. Walking there would take at least two hours. Once they left the alley, she decisively took the Hummer back out from her space.
From here, it was clear that the number of blocked cars was much lower, enough for the Hummer to drive through.
Since both Pei Linlang and Pei Yan had consumed much of their energy, Lin Yu naturally sat in the driver’s seat.
“You two focus on recovering your powers. There’s still a tough battle ahead.”
Their first destination was an antique shop in the city center. It contained not only antiques but also a collection of cold weapons. A spiked club might handle early-stage zombies, but once they evolved to first-tier, its usefulness would drop sharply.
She hadn’t purchased weapons through “official channels” before the apocalypse because they were outrageously expensive—millions per item, often fake. Even with seven million in funds, she had needed to spend carefully. After much thought, Lin Yu had decided to wait until the apocalypse to collect them.
Along the way, they passed accident scenes, heard screams from alleys and shopping centers, and occasionally had zombies chase after the roar of the engine. But their stiff bodies made them easy to leave behind.
Lin Yu ignored the chaos.
Without pause, they soon arrived at their destination.
The antique shop door was wide open, a smear of blood staining the glass. Inside, where lights should have glowed, darkness reigned. Clearly, zombies had been here, and for some reason, the power was out.
Lin Yu stopped the car about a hundred meters away. That way, even if zombies burst out, they would have time to react and not be caught off guard.
She pulled the key, glanced at the siblings, and whispered, “Stay close. Be careful.”
Then she strode forward, spiked club in hand.
Pei Yan leaned toward Linlang. “Stay with us,” he murmured, then quickened his steps, moving in front to shield them both.
At the gas station, he had been bitten and feverish, forced into weakness. Now, awake and empowered, he would not cower behind Lin Yu for protection.
When he suddenly moved ahead, Lin Yu paused briefly, then followed after him.
Inside, darkness smothered the shop. At a thought, lightning crackled in Pei Yan’s palm, casting a pale glow around them for two meters.
It had to be said—Pei Yan’s ability was incredibly useful. Not only powerful in combat but also able to light their way, even eventually to power devices.
The way ahead lit up, but Lin Yu didn’t lower her guard, ready for zombies to appear at any moment.
In silence, the three advanced through the aisles under flickering arcs of light.
The shop was large, cluttered with antiques and odd trinkets, some real, some fake. Lin Yu ignored the strange items, heading deeper toward where the cold weapons were kept.
No zombies appeared, not even a shadow of a human. Only their tense breathing echoed until—at the weapon racks at the back—a hideous chewing sound reached them.
Carefully, they edged around the racks.
There, a spear had pierced a zombie’s body. Beneath it was a man in a Zhongshan suit, skewered along with the creature.
But zombies’ weakness was the head. The spear through its belly hadn’t killed it, only pinned its movements.
The man had been dead for some time. His face was shredded by bites, gruesome and unrecognizable, sure to become a zombie soon. From the remnants, it was clear—this must have been the shop owner.
Pei Linlang had already endured an afternoon of terror. Just earlier, her compassion had nearly caused disaster. Her mental strength was stretched thin; the composure she showed was forced.
Now, faced with this bloody horror, she couldn’t hold it in. Her throat heaved, and she vomited.
Afterward, she felt slightly better.
Lin Yu paused with her club, glancing sideways at Pei Yan as though in silent question.
Pei Yan looked at Linlang, then gave a faint nod.
Lin Yu extended her spiked club toward Linlang, her voice cool and steady. “Linlang, you do it.”
Linlang, still wiping her mouth, hadn’t caught the words. When she felt better, she looked up, confused. “Sister Lin Yu, what did you say?”
Lin Yu didn’t get angry. She repeated calmly, “The zombie’s weakness is its head. Use the club to strike its head. That’s the only way to kill it completely.”
