Chapter 16: Nightmare, Light (1/2)
Shen Cheng’s face darkened, and he flicked his finger lightly on Sugar’s forehead. “Sit up!”
Sugar struggled to sit up from the bed, only to flop back down again. Shen Cheng propped her against the wall, but she lazed and slid back under the covers.
Shen Cheng couldn’t help but facepalm, wondering if the cat girl was made of liquid.
“Master…” Sugar, who was already dazed from illness, appeared even more absent-minded after just waking up. To Shen Cheng, she looked adorably silly.
Seeing Sugar pat the spot beside the pillow, she said, “Sit here…”
After a brief pause, Shen Cheng moved to the pillow’s side. “What is it?”
Under Shen Cheng’s puzzled gaze, Sugar, wrapped in the blanket, wriggled like a little caterpillar. Slowly, she crawled out and snuggled into Shen Cheng’s embrace, resting the back of her head against his chest and taking a satisfied sniff.
Seeing that Sugar was about to slide down again, Shen Cheng instinctively held her in place.
The soft body pressing against him, the fresh grassy scent, and the tickling sensation of cat ears brushing his chin made Shen Cheng sigh.
Romantic? Watching Sugar in her dazed and silly state, Shen Cheng couldn’t entertain such thoughts. He felt increasingly like an old father.
“Ah—” Sugar opened her mouth again, and Shen Cheng scooped a spoonful of brown sugar water into her mouth.
Noticing Sugar’s satisfied ear twitch, Shen Cheng felt relieved and stirred the bowl before offering another spoonful.
Spoonful after spoonful, the brown sugar water quickly disappeared. As Shen Cheng was about to ask Sugar if she wanted more, he noticed her breathing evenly; she had already fallen asleep.
Smiling quietly, Shen Cheng placed the empty bowl aside and carefully repositioned Sugar onto the pillow without waking her.
He gently covered her with the blanket then sat by the bed, watching Sugar for a moment. Confirming she wouldn’t wake anytime soon, he got up slowly, intending to handle the remaining brown sugar water in the pot.
“Mm…” Just as Shen Cheng’s hand reached the doorknob, he heard a fearful whimper from behind him.
Turning around, he saw tears in Sugar’s tightly shut eyes. One hand clutched the sheet tightly—she must have been having a nightmare, murmuring, “So dark… so scary… help me…”
His hand on the doorknob paused for a moment, Shen Cheng found his thoughts scattered.
Regaining his composure, Shen Cheng hurried back to the bed and grasped Sugar’s soft hand that clung to the sheet.
Her hand was supple and exquisite, covered in a thin layer of sweat, feeling slightly chilly.
At the touch of Shen Cheng’s warm palm, Sugar seemed to find a sliver of light in endless cold and darkness. She quickly grasped both hands around his, pressing her forehead against the back of his hand and curling up entirely around it, as if it was a campfire in the freezing winter.
Sensing Sugar’s fear from her dream, Shen Cheng felt a wave of pity for her. He used his other free hand to gently stroke Sugar’s smooth white hair, trying to comfort her.
With Shen Cheng’s soothing motion, Sugar gradually stopped trembling and returned to a calm state, her breathing becoming even once more. However, she still held tightly onto Shen Cheng’s hand.
Shen Cheng remained by her side, sitting quietly on the bed, allowing Sugar to hold his hand.
Among the two cat girls from Light Spot Cat Café, only Cheese’s background was traceable. She was a small Blue Cat Shen Cheng had encountered by a trash bin, confirmed through various evidence.
But not Sugar. Where did she come from? What happened before she arrived? When did she transform from a cat to a cat girl? In truth, Shen Cheng knew absolutely nothing about Sugar!
Moreover, based on Sugar’s earlier reactions, she seemed to harbor an unknown past.
