Chapter 1
It was the fifth day of the fifth lunar month in 1983, the Dragon Boat Festival.
Every household was celebrating this annual festival with joy and laughter.
However, in Yang Tianzhu’s house in Yangshutu, there was a scene of a daughter crying and a mother wiping away tears. Just an hour ago, Yang Tianzhu’s younger sister, Yang Niannian, had attempted to commit suicide by jumping into the river.
Fortunately, she was rescued by the eldest son of the village head and narrowly escaped death. Huang Guifang held her second daughter’s hand, completely ignoring the fact that her daughter had just woken up from her suicide attempt.
She pleaded with tears in her eyes, “Niannian, I’ll kneel down and beg you, okay? Just agree to marry Lu Shishen! Although he’s not a college student, he’s a soldier, he has a secure job, if you marry him, your life will be good, you won’t have to suffer.”
Yang Niannian looked at Huang Guifang, who was still trying to persuade her to marry Lu Shishen, and her tears suddenly burst forth.
“Mother, Sister is your daughter, I’m your daughter too, are you being too biased?” Before Huang Guifang could speak, Yang Tianzhu chimed in, “Niannian, do you really want to make our mother kneel down and beg you? Our father passed away early, our mother raised us alone, it’s not easy.
Lu Shishen has a secure job, you marry him, at least you won’t starve. Your mother and I wouldn’t harm you.
” Yang Niannian wiped away her tears and sneered, “Lu Shishen is so good, why don’t you let Sister marry him? He was supposed to marry Sister, wasn’t he?”
Yang Niannian suddenly realized that her tears were pointless.
In reality, she wasn’t Yang Tianzhu’s sister. The real Yang Niannian had drowned when she jumped into the river. She was a 21st-century college student, also named Yang Niannian. It was Friday, she was playing games all night, and after losing ten games in a row, she felt a pain in her chest, her eyes went black, and she was transported to this place.
She had the memories of this body in her mind and knew the reason for the original owner’s suicide. She could only say that she felt sorry for the original owner.
Huang Guifang had married two husbands.
She had Yang Tianzhu and Yang Huiying with her first husband, who died shortly after their daughter was born. She then remarried and had Yang Niannian with her second husband. Due to their poor financial situation, they didn’t let Yang Tianzhu go to school and made him stay home to work on the farm. He had always resented his stepfather for this.
When Yang Niannian was thirteen, Huang Guifang’s second husband also died. She didn’t remarry and raised her three children alone. Huang Guifang favored her eldest daughter and son, and she was the least affectionate towards Yang Niannian. Ironically, the daughter she loved the least was the most sensible and filial. Huang Guifang said she couldn’t afford to send both children to school, so Yang Niannian volunteered to drop out and work to support her sister’s education.
After the college entrance exam, her sister didn’t receive her admission letter and thought she had failed. Coincidentally, a matchmaker introduced Yang Huiying to Lu Shishen. Because the man was a soldier and couldn’t return for the time being, they both looked at each other’s photos and were very satisfied. The marriage was thus settled. Because the man was busy and couldn’t return for the time being, his family gave them 20 yuan as an engagement gift.
20 yuan was just the price of a cup of milk tea in the 21st century, but in this era, it was enough for a normal family’s expenses for half a year.
It was said that the man was a company commander in the army, young and promising with great potential for advancement.
After the engagement, everyone who saw Yang Huiying praised her for her good fortune. Who would have thought that less than a month after the engagement, Yang Huiying suddenly received her college admission letter. The man’s family was very happy and even sent 50 yuan, saying they were willing to support Yang Huiying’s education.
It should have been a happy occasion, but Yang Huiying changed her mind after only a year of college. She started dating in school, and her boyfriend was Yang Niannian’s boyfriend. This was already enough to make Yang Niannian despair.
Huang Guifang couldn’t afford to break off the engagement, and in a moment of madness, she asked Yang Niannian to marry Lu Shishen in her sister’s place.
Yang Niannian couldn’t accept this, her faith was shattered, and in a fit of anger, she attempted suicide by jumping into the river, leading to the current situation.
Now, their family was the laughingstock of the entire village. Seeing that she was unyielding, Yang Tianzhu said with a dark face, “Even if Huiying marries Lu Shishen, Fang Hengfei won’t marry you. He’s a college student now, with a promising future, how could he marry you? He and Huiying are a perfect match.” “I’ve already given up on Fang Hengfei.
A man who changes his mind so easily isn’t a good person, I don’t like him anymore. I don’t want to marry in Yang Huiying’s place either.”
Why should Yang Huiying have a good life, while she has to clean up the mess? In her previous life, her parents treated her like a precious jewel, she had never suffered such injustice.
Thinking of her parents, Yang Niannian’s eyes turned red, she wondered if her parents could bear the blow of her death. Yang Tianzhu snorted, “I’ll tell you the truth! It’s no use if you don’t agree. Our mother has already sent your household registration book to get a marriage license with Lu Shishen.
You are now husband and wife. Military marriages cannot be dissolved, you have to accept it!” He and Yang Huiying were siblings born to the same parents, and their relationship was deeper. Because his stepfather had been better to Yang Niannian than to him and Yang Huiying, he had always been hostile towards Yang Niannian, feeling that they were not siblings born to the same father and that she was not close to him.
It was precisely because of this that Lu’s family was worried that Yang Huiying would become wild later on, and when they proposed to get a marriage license first, he and Yang Huiying came up with this plan. If they broke off the engagement, they had to return the money, and their family was penniless.
They couldn’t afford to pay it back. Yang Niannian was stunned and looked at Huang Guifang, “Is he telling the truth?”
Actually, she could tell from Yang Tianzhu’s expression that he wasn’t lying, but she still held out a glimmer of hope for the original owner.
Huang Guifang wiped away her tears and sobbed, “Niannian, it’s your mother who is sorry for you. Your mother knows you are a good daughter who is sensible and obedient. Be obedient one more time, okay? As long as you live a good life with Lu Shishen, he will definitely treat you well.” Yang Niannian pursed her lips and didn’t say anything.
She felt her heart grow cold.
Military marriages cannot be dissolved, those weren’t just words to scare her, it was the truth. In other words, she was now married to this unknown Lu Shishen? For the 21st-century Yang Niannian, this news was simply too explosive. “Niannian, Niannian, don’t scare your mother, say something.” Seeing that she wasn’t saying anything, Huang Guifang anxiously shook Yang Niannian’s arm. Lu’s family had given them more than 100 yuan in total.
If her second daughter lost her mind and committed suicide again, she wouldn’t be able to pay back the money, and she would lose a daughter.
Although she favored her son and eldest daughter, she also had feelings for her youngest daughter. Yang Niannian let out a cold, sarcastic laugh, “Mother, I’m willing to marry. But you listen carefully, once I step out of this door, I won’t come back.
Even if I die outside, it has nothing to do with you.
Similarly, I don’t care what happens to you in the future.” Military marriages cannot be dissolved, so she’ll just grit her teeth and get through it. In her previous life, Yang Niannian admired soldiers.
She didn’t want to marry before because she didn’t want to clean up Yang Huiying’s mess. Besides, she hadn’t met Lu Shishen, they had no feelings for each other, and she didn’t even know what he looked like. However, he was a soldier after all, his character should be good.
Yang Huiying had a discerning eye, a man who could get engaged just by looking at a photo, shouldn’t be too bad.
