Chapter 127 My brother-in-law is Lu Shishen

Yang Huiying was determined.

She struggled with her luggage, pushing her way through the crowded aisle, finally reaching the entrance of the sleeper carriage.

Just as she was about to enter, the carriage door was locked and wouldn’t budge.

She found the conductor’s rest room and explained her intention to pay for an upgrade. The conductor inquired and learned that there were empty berths, so he prepared to charge her for the upgrade.

“It will cost an additional 8 yuan and 20 cents to reach Ancheng.”

Yang Huiying clutched her luggage tightly and said with embarrassment, lowering her head, “It’s like this, I didn’t bring enough money.

My sister and brother-in-law are in the carriage ahead. Would it be possible for you to inform them and ask them to pay for my upgrade?

My sister’s name is Yang Niannian, and my brother-in-law’s name is Lu Shi Shen.” The conductor was a young man in his twenties.

Seeing Yang Huiying’s flushed face and disheveled hair from being squeezed in the carriage, he felt a pang of sympathy. It was indeed inconvenient for such a delicate girl to be crammed in with all those burly men. “Alright, wait a moment.”

The conductor quickly found Yang Niannian. He was stunned by her beauty. Having been a conductor for two years, he had never seen such a beautiful and well-dressed girl. He had felt somewhat sorry for Yang Huiying, but now, seeing Yang Niannian who looked like a fairy, he was too embarrassed to make eye contact. “You’re Yang Niannian, right? Your sister is standing at the carriage door and wants you to pay for her upgrade to a sleeper berth.”

Yang Niannian was resting on the lower berth when she heard the conductor’s words. She replied resolutely, “I don’t know her.”

The conductor was a little confused.

“You… you both have the same surname, and she was able to accurately state your name. Are you sure you don’t know her?”

Lu Shi Shen, who had heard the commotion, walked over from the next compartment. He said emotionlessly, “Whether or not they are related doesn’t have much to do with paying for the upgrade. It’s a matter of personal choice.”

The conductor was speechless. Lu Shi Shen was a head taller than him, with a straight posture that clearly indicated he was a soldier.

His cold gaze made him seem intimidating. He was smart enough not to say anything more. He secretly glanced at Yang Niannian and turned to leave.

After the conductor left, Lu Shi Shen didn’t return to his bed. Instead, he bent down and sat beside Yang Niannian’s bed.

“You woke up early today. If you’re tired, sleep for a while. I’ll watch over you. Don’t worry and sleep.” Yang Niannian winked playfully.

“I’ll watch a good show first and then sleep.” With that, she chased after the conductor.  Learning that Yang Niannian and Lu Shi Shen wouldn’t help her pay for the upgrade, Yang Huiying wasn’t surprised. She patiently said, “Can you take me to them?”

The toilet was right next to the door, and the stench of excrement mixed with the strange smells of people filled the air. It was unbearable. She didn’t want to stay there for a second longer. “No.” This time, the conductor refused decisively.

“There are rules on the train. You can’t go there unless you pay for the upgrade.” Yang Huiying was unwilling to give up. She looked at the conductor with watery eyes, hoping to persuade him with sweet words. However, suddenly, some passengers in the carriage started arguing, and the conductor rushed over to check the situation.

Yang Huiying stomped her feet in anger, but then she caught sight of Yang Niannian on the other side of the door, laughing at her.

The two sisters were separated by a door. Yang Niannian made a face at Yang Huiying through the small glass window in the middle of the door, leaving Yang Huiying fuming with anger. Yang Niannian happily went back to lie down.

The train rumbled on for several hours, stopping at seven or eight stations along the way. Every time people got on or off, Yang Huiying was squeezed and jostled. Once, a man with a child on his shoulders got on the train, and the child’s shoes kicked Yang Huiying in the face. She was already feeling humiliated enough, but then, someone stole the dried cuttlefish and dried fish she had brought with her. Yang Huiying’s face contorted in anger.

She didn’t bother to find the conductor.

She thought it was a very undignified thing to bring these things on the train. Such a rustic act didn’t suit her status. At around 5 pm, the train finally arrived at Ancheng Railway Station. Yang Niannian stretched and got off the train, feeling refreshed and invigorated.

“Sleeper berths are definitely more comfortable than seated carriages. Let’s buy sleeper berths on the way back to Haicheng.” Lu Shi Shen simply hummed in response. Seeing that she was so engrossed in talking, she almost bumped into someone.

He reached out his hand and pulled her along. After leaving the station, Lu Shi Shen didn’t seem to be in a hurry to go home. He first took Yang Niannian to a nearby restaurant for dinner and then went to the platform to wait for the bus. Dayu Village was located in the suburbs of Ancheng.

They took the bus to the edge of the city, but they couldn’t find a bullock cart going in their direction, so they had to walk the rest of the way.

As dusk settled, the countryside lacked streetlights. It was also a cloudy day, and the road surface was barely visible.

They walked along the bumpy dirt road, taking deep steps and shallow steps. Yang Niannian almost tripped several times, but Lu Shi Shen managed to catch her in time. When Yang Niannian almost stumbled again, Lu Shi Shen bent down and stood in front of her. “I’ll carry you.” Yang Niannian shook her head and refused. “No, I’m not tired.”

They didn’t know how much longer they had to walk. Lu Shi Shen was still carrying things. How could she let him carry her? What if he hurt his back?  After they met her relatives and elders, their life together would truly begin. Thinking about this, she tilted her head curiously and asked, “Did you tell your family that we’re coming back?” Lu Shi Shen nodded.

“I called the village head’s house yesterday.

” It was a little boring walking at night. Yang Niannian chatted with him casually. “How long did it take you to walk from the city to your home before?” Lu Shi Shen replied, “Twenty-five minutes.” Yang Niannian said, “That means we’re almost there.” Lu Shi Shen pursed his lips, wanting to say something but then holding back. There were many families in the countryside who kept dogs.

Every time they passed a village, the dogs there would bark and cause a commotion, adding to the rural atmosphere.
