Chapter 8: The Official Will Come to Arrest You Tomorrow

At this moment, Jiang Jiuyue was lying comfortably on her bed, preparing for a midday nap. It had been a long time since she had enjoyed such a peaceful life, where she could eat her fill and then sleep soundly.

Jiang Jiuyue turned over and couldn’t help but sigh. Although life in ancient times had many inconveniences, it was still far better than life in the apocalypse.

Here, she didn’t have to worry about not getting clean food, or being ambushed by zombies in her sleep. She didn’t have to fear being backstabbed by teammates, which could lead to death by zombies.

Jiang Jiuyue was very satisfied with this life, but the Liang family was too poor. Even something as simple as noodles was considered a treasure. She would have to find a way to earn money.

However, aside from her special abilities and combat skills, she didn’t have anything else to offer.

Jiang Jiuyue turned over again, deciding that this matter had to be thought through carefully. There was no need to rush.

Before she figured out a way to make a living, she needed to collect the debt the Liang family owed her first.

As she pondered, she gradually drifted into sleep.

While she was enjoying her afternoon nap with her three daughters, the village head, whom she had beaten earlier, had already arrived at his daughter’s home in the county town. He was crying to his son-in-law.

“Good son-in-law, you have to help me out! That evil woman, Jiang Jiuyue, beat me up like this! She doesn’t even care about you, a government official!”

The village head’s son-in-law, Zhao Kun, worked as an official in the yamen. When he heard that his father-in-law had been so badly beaten by a woman, he was quite displeased.

Coincidentally, tomorrow was his day off. He immediately promised his father-in-law that he would take his wife and children to his father-in-law’s house for a small visit the next morning and, by the way, teach that evil woman a lesson!

The village head was overjoyed to hear his promise and returned home happily.

Back in the village, news quickly spread that the official son-in-law was coming to arrest Jiang Jiuyue.

Jiang Jiuyue, who was at home with nothing to do, was pondering how to find a way to make money, when she heard someone quietly calling her name from outside the yard.

Luckily, she had keen hearing, or else she wouldn’t have heard anyone calling her.

The voice sounded familiar. Jiang Jiuyue thought for a moment and remembered it was Chun Tao, a woman who often washed clothes with the original owner and had a decent relationship with her.

The others in the house might not have heard, or perhaps they did hear but were too afraid to respond. No one dared to speak up.

Jiang Jiuyue went over and opened the yard door. As soon as Chun Tao saw her, she quickly said, “Jiuyue, you should run! The village head’s son-in-law, the official, is coming tomorrow to arrest you!”

Jiang Jiuyue had already known about the village head going to get his son-in-law. She shook her head at Chun Tao, saying, “I’m not running. If the official comes, then let him come. Whether he can leave with me is another matter.”

Chun Tao was really anxious. The son-in-law of the village head was an official, and he carried a knife!

No matter how skilled Jiang Jiuyue was, could she really fight against an official?

“Jiuyue! He’s an official! A member of the government! I know you hate your in-laws, but we common folk can’t afford to go against the government. If you don’t run, you might lose your life!”

Chun Tao had a good relationship with Jiang Jiuyue and knew how much she had suffered in her in-laws’ house. She understood why Jiang Jiuyue would want revenge on her in-laws, and even felt a sense of relief. But now that it involved an official, she couldn’t just watch Jiang Jiuyue be arrested.

Jiang Jiuyue understood that Chun Tao was easily frightened. If she told her she wouldn’t leave and was just going to wait for the official to come, it would probably scare Chun Tao to death. After thinking for a moment, she decided to just placate her.

“Chun Tao, don’t worry. I won’t suffer any losses. I’ll pack my things and leave when it gets dark,” Jiang Jiuyue reassured her.

Hearing this, Chun Tao finally breathed a sigh of relief. Then, she reached into her chest and took out a handful of copper coins, handing them to Jiang Jiuyue.

“I don’t have much to help you with, but I’ve saved up this little money. Take it as travel expenses. Even if it’s not much, it might be enough for a few buns.”

Chun Tao was a young wife who couldn’t make any major decisions at home. These few copper coins were all the savings she had managed to gather over a long time.

Jiang Jiuyue looked at the handful of copper coins in her hand and was genuinely moved.

She knew Chun Tao’s life wasn’t easy, and these few copper coins were probably hard-earned over many days or even months.

Having experienced the betrayal of teammates during the apocalypse, Jiang Jiuyue had almost lost all trust in human nature. But Chun Tao had shown her the most compassionate side of people.

Jiang Jiuyue pushed the coins back toward Chun Tao. “You keep this money. I took some of my mother-in-law’s hidden savings, so I have money now. Don’t worry about me.”

She even took out some coins to show Chun Tao, which finally made her feel at ease.

“Alright, be careful, and take care. I’ll leave now.”

Chun Tao dared not stay any longer. If anyone saw her, they might report her to the village head, and that would spell trouble for her.

Jiang Jiuyue nodded and watched as Chun Tao walked away.

Back in her room, Jiang Jiuyue wasn’t particularly disturbed by the news that the village head’s official son-in-law was coming to cause trouble.

She had plenty of ways to make sure that the official would come and never leave, or rather, that if he came looking for trouble, he wouldn’t be going back the same way.

Since he wasn’t arriving until tomorrow, Jiang Jiuyue brushed it aside and continued considering her plans to make money.

She only had combat skills, so she couldn’t run a business. One good option was to join the grain transport company as a bodyguard to protect shipments on boats.

Changhe County, where Jiang Jiuyue was located, was an important hub on the canal. Though it was just a county town, the presence of docks made it extremely prosperous, and there were several grain transport companies that worked with high-ranking officials and wealthy merchants to transport goods.

The bodyguards working for these companies were well paid, and Jiang Jiuyue thought that by making a few trips, she could save up a decent amount of money.

Once she had enough money to buy a boat, she could start her own business. With her skills, she was confident she could make a good living.

The more she thought about it, the more feasible it seemed. Once she dealt with the official’s trouble, she would head to the county’s grain transport office to inquire.

With her money-making plan in place, Jiang Jiuyue glanced at the sky, realizing it was almost time for dinner.

She grabbed some rice and had her eyes on the hens in the backyard.

She kicked the door of the second room. “Come out and cook!”

Ma Guichun quickly opened the door, took the rice from Jiang Jiuyue, and was about to head to the kitchen when Jiang Jiuyue stopped her.

“Go to the backyard and kill a chicken. Half of it should be braised tonight, and the other half should be made into chicken soup for me in the morning.”

Ma Guichun dared not disobey her. She nodded obediently and went to catch a chicken in the backyard.

It wasn’t yet the time for the chickens to return to the coop, and the sound of Ma Guichun scrambling around caused a ruckus in the backyard. Du Jinhua, who was lying in the dilapidated house, heard the noise and gritted her teeth in anger.

But she didn’t dare say anything. She knew that if she spoke up, Jiang Jiuyue would crush her other arm too.

She could only lie in bed, cursing Jiang Jiuyue with the most venomous words, while silently praying that the village head would hurry up and bring his official son-in-law to teach that evil woman a lesson!
