Chapter 20: Market Execution

The next morning, Ryan still woke up early, even earlier than he had the day before.

After all, to be honest, Ryan didn’t want to ride the horse so fast anymore; not only could Nanali not stand it, but the poor, skinny horse couldn’t either.

Stepping out of his room, Ryan saw that the two maid sisters were already up before him and were cleaning.

“Good morning, Mr. Ryan!”

The energetic, vibrant voice naturally belonged to Daisy.

“Good morning, Mr. Ryan.”

The respectful tone with a hint of maturity belonged to Darly.

Ryan nodded, smiled back his greeting, and prepared to wash up.

He hadn’t taken two steps when he saw Nanali emerge from her room, still rubbing her sleepy eyes.

“Good morning, Nanali; you’re up so early?”

Ryan asked with a smile.

Nanali let out a little yawn; of course she wouldn’t admit that she was afraid of almost being late and having to ride on Ryan’s horse.

“I just woke up later than usual yesterday.”

“I see…”

Ryan understood what Nanali was thinking but didn’t point it out, so the two of different sizes washed up together.

As he had done yesterday, Ryan used wind magic to dry Nanali’s hair before having her sit at the table to wait while he went into the kitchen to prepare breakfast.

“Mr. Ryan, isn’t it somewhat impolite to address Milady directly by her name?”

While cooking, Darly first struggled to chase Daisy out of the kitchen before asking Ryan.

Ryan continued cooking as he smiled and said, “It was Nanali’s request.”

“Huh?”

At this, Darly blinked her beautiful eyes in surprise.

Mr. Ryan has only been here a few days, and he’s already captured Milady’s favor?

Old Lamb had cared for Milady for so many years without Milady ever asking him to call her by her given name.

“By the way, Mr. Ryan, how are things with Marquis Baikasi?”

“The Marquis Baikasi, you say…”

Ryan paused to ponder, then, as if answering a different question, said with a smile, “By the way, we’re running low on provisions at the estate; could you go to the market later to buy some? Would you like me to give you a ride?”

Hearing Ryan’s reply, Darly froze for a moment before suddenly realizing something.

“I understand; I’ll go myself later. You don’t need to trouble yourself, Mr. Ryan.”

While chatting with Darly, Ryan had already finished breakfast and was plating the dishes.

Carrying breakfast for himself and Nanali, Ryan looked at Darly and asked, “Have you learned how to make it?”

Darly was stunned again; she had been secretly learning to cook Ryan’s dishes but hadn’t expected him to notice.

Then, she broke into a bright smile and said, “I have. Let me make breakfast tomorrow, okay?”

“Of course you can, and thank you for sharing the work.”

After finishing breakfast with Nanali, there was still some time before the church bells would ring.

Originally, Ryan had intended to take the carriage, but Nanali, blushing, said it was too troublesome, so Ryan had no choice but to keep riding the horse with her.

Because they weren’t in a hurry, Ryan rode leisurely all the way, and Nanali clung to his arm with both small hands as she observed the surroundings.

Riding seriously under Ryan’s guidance felt even steadier than a carriage, and Nanali had never seen Art City from such an open vantage point.

But after a while, Nanali lost interest and withdrew her gaze.

For some reason, Nanali felt that Art City seemed… somewhat lifeless.

When they had covered half the distance and passed by the Art City market, the church bells finally sounded.

Nanali suddenly noticed that the bells had just rung; it should have been the time when commoners were just heading out, yet the entrance to the market was packed with people.

The crowd blocking any passage prevented Nanali from seeing inside, so she had to strain to listen.

Vaguely, Nanali heard words like “Marquis Baikasi” and “knight captain.”

Could it be related to the knights who had broken into her home yesterday and falsely accused her of hiding forbidden tomes?

Unable to contain her curiosity, Nanali looked up at Ryan and asked, “Ryan, what’s happening over there?”

“They’re probably holding some kind of performance; there’s nothing worth seeing.”

Ryan answered with a smile.

But the next moment, a piercing scream came from the market entrance.

A burst of cheers immediately followed, drowning out the scream.

It was clear how long the Marquis Baikasi’s knight captain had allowed the commoners’ resentment to build.

Ryan did not stop and soon rode away from the scene.

Suddenly, Ryan felt a gaze and lowered his head.

He saw Nanali in his arms looking up at him without blinking, her thoughts unreadable.

“Nanali, what’s wrong?”

“…Nothing.”

Nanali shook her head and looked away.

From Ryan’s unseen angle, a faint smile appeared on Nanali’s face.

She seemed to have guessed what Ryan had gone out to do last night.

Or rather, she had actually figured it out last night but had never expected Ryan to solve it in such a way.

Arriving at Alcot Academy, Ryan rode to the stables, secured his horse, and then helped Nanali down.

As he turned, he happened to see a knight in silver-white armor leading a horse, apparently intending to park it in Ryan’s spot.

That knight happened to be the same one whom Ryan had thrown over his shoulder yesterday morning.

“Oh, fancy meeting you again!”

Ryan waved in a familiar manner and said, “Would you like me to give you this spot?”

The knight’s eyes narrowed at Ryan from beneath his helm as he silently led his horse to another spot.

It seemed the Odysseus family’s knights had some decorum after all.

Though a bit overbearing, they still knew their limits.

It was just that no one knew what the Odysseus family’s heiress was like…

Leading Nanali to the academy building, Ryan saw from afar a white-haired figure waiting there.

“Teacher Rowan.”

Nanali greeted him first.

“It looks like you’ve recovered well; that’s wonderful.”

Rowan nodded at Nanali, then said to Ryan, “I’ve already spoken with the dean about you substituting for class; she said she’d like to meet you.”

“Did she agree?”

Ryan asked.

“She did; she said I’ll teach the first half of the class and you’ll take the second half.”

“Alright.”

After escorting Nanali into the classroom and asking Rowan for the principal’s location, Ryan set off to find Dean Alcot.
