Chapter 3: The Two Maids of House Axi.
After arranging Lamb’s funeral affairs, Horace personally took Ryan to meet his daughter.
Along the way, Horace introduced his daughter to Ryan.
“Nanali…she’s actually quite reliable, but she’s somewhat spoiled in temperament and is hard for ordinary people to handle, so I think, Ryan, you may find this job difficult to accept.”
Ryan shook his head and said, “I have already sworn the knight’s oath, so I naturally cannot go back on my word.”
“In that case, I will find a new butler to care for Nanali as soon as possible, and until then, I will trouble you.”
Ryan did not mind; she was just a count’s daughter after all… surely not as difficult to deal with as a demon general.
“We’ve arrived.”
After walking a bit further, Horace stopped in front of a room.
Horace raised his hand to knock on the door but paused for a moment with his hand frozen in midair before shaking his head.
“You should knock on the door yourself so that you can meet Nanali, I…I’ll be going now.”
Having said that, Horace hurried away, leaving Ryan alone as if he were avoiding something.
Seeing Horace off, Ryan turned his head and looked at the door before him.
Then, the scene from the beginning occurred.
Being silently sized up by Ryan like this, Nanali clearly felt displeased; she furrowed her delicate brows and said:
“Who are you?”
Her youthful voice was pleasant too, like a tinkling silver bell, and it would have been even better without that impatient tone.
Ryan also realized he had been somewhat rude, and he put on what he considered a friendly smile:
“Hello, Miss Nanali, my name is Ryan, and I will serve as your private butler starting today…”
“Bang!”
Before he could finish introducing himself, Nanali turned her head and slammed the door shut.
Ryan stood at the doorway still wearing that smile, though it now looked a bit stiff.
Could it be that I look really off-putting?
Ryan considered his appearance to be fairly delicate, and his most distinctive feature… black hair and black eyes… had not led to any discrimination in this empire but instead tended to attract more favor.
Perhaps it was because old Lamb, who had always taken care of Nanali, had just died, leaving Miss Nanali still somewhat saddened.
It must have been, Ryan guessed, that mentioning his new role as Miss Nanali’s private butler had possibly touched a sore spot for her.
He decided to let Nanali be quiet for a while and avoid bringing up his butler duties for now, focusing only on fulfilling the basic duties of a butler.
Next came old Lamb’s funeral.
Of course there was no funeral banquet, as such customs did not exist here.
However, as the longtime butler who had served the Axi Count family his whole life, the scale of his funeral was quite grand, held entirely according to the rites for a direct member of the Axi household.
Ryan, as Lamb’s adopted son and a knight, was placed at the front to help place the body in the coffin, present flowers, and pray alongside the priest.
Nanali never appeared throughout the entire ceremony.
After old Lamb’s funeral, the Count and his wife left.
Watching the Count and his wife depart, Ryan realized that from the moment he had arrived until then, they had never once met their daughter Nanali.
How strange the family relationships were.
But since the Count and his wife had already left, it also meant they trusted Ryan to take care of Nanali.
Arriving at the butler’s room, Ryan opened the wardrobe and changed into a well-fitting butler uniform.
Raising his index finger, Ryan silently recited a spell in his mind, and then a circular mirror-like water surface appeared before him.
Looking at his reflection in the mirror wearing the butler uniform, Ryan nodded with satisfaction, thinking it was much more comfortable than wearing armor.
“It’s magic!”
“It really is magic.”
Just as Ryan was striking a flashy pose, two light, feminine voices suddenly came from the doorway.
Ryan’s pose stiffened slightly and he turned his head to see two adorable girls in maid outfits leaning on the side of the doorframe, staring at him without blinking.
They truly looked like young girls, younger than Ryan, both with flaxen long hair and holding handkerchiefs and brooms, apparently the mansion’s maids who had come to clean the room.
After the scene remained silent for a moment, Ryan calmly returned to a natural posture, adjusted his butler uniform’s cravat, and introduced himself to the two girls:
“Hello, I’m Ryan, and starting today I will be Miss Nanali’s private butler.”
“Hello, Mr. Butler!”
Among the two, one energetic twin-tailed girl smiled and waved at Ryan, saying:
“I’m Daisy, and this is my sister, Darly!”
Compared with Daisy, the older sister Darly was more composed and wore her flaxen hair loose like a waterfall instead of tying it up.
Darly smiled faintly and performed a standard maid curtsy to Ryan:
“Mr. Butler, please excuse our manners.”
“No need for formalities, you can just call me Ryan.”
Ryan examined the two women carefully and then asked, “How many maids are there in the mansion in total?”
“Reporting to Mr. Ryan, there are only my sister and I as maids in the mansion.”
Ryan was speechless.
Given Count Horace’s means, it seemed unlikely that he couldn’t afford to hire more maids.
Noticing Ryan’s perplexity, Darly smiled and explained:
“It’s not that Count Horace is stingy, but rather that this mansion is fully manageable with just my sister and me.”
Ryan enjoyed teasing such confident young knights during his time in the Knight Order.
Of course, this was not the Knight Order, and Ryan was only a temporary butler.
“Mr. Ryan!”
Daisy scampered up with her little face nearly touching Ryan’s, her eyes fluttering:
“Could you teach me that magic from just now? With that magic, I’m sure cleaning chores would be much more convenient!”
“Daisy!”
Seeing Daisy’s expression, Darly sounded slightly annoyed.
Ryan waved his hand and said, “Of course, I can teach you when I have time.”
“Yay!”
Darly rubbed her brow, seemingly at a loss with her spirited little sister.
Ryan glanced at the sky outside and said to Darly, “Isn’t it about time to prepare dinner?”
Darly nodded and said, “Yes, I was planning to finish cleaning this room with my sister and then start cooking.”
After thinking for a moment, Ryan said, “How about I make dinner tonight?”
“Ah?”
Darly was stunned for a moment and then hurriedly waved her hand, saying, “How could that be…”
“Sure, sure!”
Daisy cut in with a smile, “From the moment I first saw Mr. Ryan, I got the feeling that he could do anything, so I’m really looking forward to the dinner Mr. Ryan will make!”
“I definitely won’t let you down.”
Ryan was very confident.
In the memories of that unlucky transmigrator, there were many culinary recipes, and Ryan had long wanted to try them.
However, during the days of the Knight Order’s expeditions, Ryan had absolutely no opportunity to try them.
