Wanting to retrieve the little pouch, a shiver ran through him, and he instantly understood.
Jiang Baiyu was still feeling drowsy, having been rudely awakened before he had fully rested. He forced himself to stay awake until the sky began to brighten, but now that he could finally relax, he felt utterly drained and incredibly sleepy. He decided to put away the other parts of the skeleton, leaving just the skull out, and even set it on a pet bed below. To prevent himself from being startled awake by the sight of a skull, he covered it with a piece of satin.
After doing all this, Jiang Baiyu finally couldn’t hold on any longer. He groggily climbed into bed, and as soon as his eyes closed, he fell into a deep sleep.
He slept until the sun was high in the sky, and finally, there were sounds outside.
The disturbances in the middle of the night had disrupted countless people’s dreams, causing the entire Fumo Town to wake up later than usual.
Jiang Baiyu rolled over, clutching his blanket, feeling irritable. He flipped over again, tossing and turning, unable to fall back asleep.
In the end, he could only yawn and get up, running his fingers through his hair. His waist-length hair was as smooth and silky as satin, showing no signs of tangling from his sleeping position.
With a single click, he changed his outfit, making getting dressed and grooming in the morning no longer a hassle.
Calling out, the innkeeper came in with hot water. “Guest, here’s the hot water for your washing.”
Jiang Baiyu propped his chin up and lazily replied, “Just put the water down.”
“Yes, sir!”
Along with the hot water came face wash powder and teeth-cleaning powder.
After getting himself ready, Jiang Baiyu glanced at the skull on the table, resignedly got up, lifted the satin covering, and picked it up. Upon closer inspection, the teeth were quite neat, not a single one missing. He decided to use the satin that had covered the skull as a face towel, giving it a wash and then applying the teeth-cleaning powder to clean it thoroughly.
What a hassle it was to take care of a dead ancestor! After tidying it up, he placed the skull back in the pet bed and found another piece of satin to cover it, calling the innkeeper to clean up.
Both the bathwater from last night and the washing water from today needed to be cleaned up.
Knowing what needed to be cleaned, three people came directly.
Taking the opportunity, Jiang Baiyu asked, “Did anyone in town discuss the strange phenomenon that happened last night?”
“Sir, the strange phenomenon last night was so frightening that everyone in town is talking about it. I came from home to the inn and overheard that everyone is worried that the man-eating ghost from Demon Head Mountain might not have been eliminated and could unleash its wrath on Fumo Town.”
The innkeeper smiled bitterly as he spoke, “Who would dare to question that man-eating ghost now? It’s just too terrifying!”
Whether it was the man-eating ghost’s release or the actions of the exterminators, both sides proved that their strengths were not simple, which led to this level of confrontation.
The residents of Fumo Town were scared out of their wits, realizing how terrifying the man-eating ghost from Demon Head Mountain was.
If the celestial beings who came to exterminate it lost, they could fly away whenever they wanted, leaving Fumo Town to face the wrath of the man-eating ghost, and the whole town would be doomed.
Some people were already preparing to flee to other places for safety.
Jiang Baiyu asked, “Which celestial beings went to exterminate the man-eating ghost on Demon Head Mountain?”
The innkeeper smiled, “Sir, how would I know the origins of the celestial beings? Just by their demeanor and style, I can guess they have a significant background.”
Jiang Baiyu was just casually asking. If he knew, that would be great; he could avoid these people in the future, as they didn’t seem like good folks. If he didn’t know, he would keep an eye out to see who they were.
Hearing the innkeeper say this, he wasn’t surprised. He waved his hand, asking the innkeeper to bring him food.
He also placed a portion in front of the skull to prevent it from causing trouble again.
Suddenly, a loud exclamation came from next door.
“What? Demon Head Mountain has been completely flattened?”
Hearing this unexpected statement, Jiang Baiyu involuntarily paused his eating and perked up his ears to listen.
The neighbor living next door was clearly not an ordinary person. While the residents of Fumo Town were worrying about the strange phenomenon from last night, some had already gone to the site to check it out.
One voice said, “The entire Demon Head Mountain has disappeared, leaving behind a massive pit. That strange phenomenon last night was likely the exterminators and the ghost perishing together, both sides suffering heavy losses.”
The listeners were stirred, unable to speak for a long time.
Jiang Baiyu was equally shocked. Such a large mountain had just vanished!
This world was even more dangerous than he had thought!
He silently mourned for the beautiful young man for three seconds; it was truly a fleeting moment.
Such a good-looking boy, a rare sight, with looks, temperament, and demeanor all at their peak, truly a dragon among men, and just like that, he was blown to smithereens, his spirit extinguished.
The goose he had molded for two hours was a product of his labor, while the beautiful young man was like a little clay figure crafted by Nuwa.
Jiang Baiyu sighed and dug into his food.
The neighbor finally processed the news and said in a low voice, “Do you know why Demon Head Mountain is called that?”
“I don’t know. Do you?”
“I once happened to see records about Demon Head Mountain in ancient texts. It is said that a thousand years ago, the world was not as it is now, where the royal family was above all. The families and sects served the royal family. At that time, the sects were supreme, and the royal family was just ordinary people in front of the major sects.”
“Later, a shocking news spread among the sects: a catastrophic disaster was about to occur, leading to the suffering of all living beings, which caused disputes among the sects.”
“Some believed that since the disaster had not yet occurred, there was still a chance to save it. They suggested taking in the strongest cultivator who would cause the disaster and teaching him carefully to bring him back to the right path. With such talent that could overturn the world, perhaps they could create miracles that had never been discovered before and open new paths.”
“Others believed that the crisis should be nipped in the bud and that one should not have such an optimistic view of the culprit who would lead to the suffering of all living beings. The world-destroying demon should be executed, roots and all, to prevent future troubles.”
“Killing is always easier than protecting. The opponent was ultimately killed on Demon Head Mountain, and the attackers set up formations to eliminate all possibilities.”
“Coincidentally, the family that went deep into Demon Head Mountain to exterminate the man-eating ghost yesterday was one of the families that strongly supported the execution of the world-destroying demon back then, the Chen family from Linchuan.”
The neighbor paused, “Do you suspect that the man-eating ghost from Demon Head Mountain is related to the demon that was executed back then?”
“No, I just happened to think of this record when I saw Demon Head Mountain. It’s just a sigh. They say it’s a world-destroying demon, but in reality, it didn’t do anything at all. The fierce battle that followed had nothing to do with the so-called demon. After that, the power of the sects and families greatly declined, while the royal family in the mortal realm rose up, seizing the opportunity to gather power and soar. They firmly pressed down the sects and families that once stood above them, becoming pawns in the balance of power.”
“A thousand years have passed, and now even Demon Head Mountain is gone. Who will remember that there was once a person who was suddenly pointed at by thousands and met a tragic end overnight?”
“The residents of Fumo Town keep saying that the other side is a man-eating ghost, but who has actually been eaten in this town? It’s just that when the other side appeared, there was a strange phenomenon in the world, and out of fear, they made up a story to vent their fears, which eventually turned into the terrifying man-eating ghost that attracted cultivators to exterminate it, solidifying its guilt.”
The neighbor fell silent again and changed the topic.
“The Linchuan Chen family is arrogant and overbearing. The young master of the main family fell into the hands of the nameless man-eating ghost on Demon Head Mountain, which enraged the Chen family, leading to this incident. This place is not suitable for staying long, lest the Chen family vent their anger on Fumo Town and drag us into it.”
Suddenly, the voices next door grew louder, and one person called out, “Little friend next door, finish your meal and leave quickly!”
Having been caught eavesdropping, Jiang Baiyu maintained his composure. “Thanks for the reminder.”
After that, he quickly finished his meal.
Looking at the food placed in front of the skull, Jiang Baiyu curiously picked up a piece with his chopsticks.
It was said that the offerings would lose their flavor once eaten, becoming very unappetizing.
He tasted it, and it felt no different.
Stuffing the skull into the little pouch, this time it didn’t cause a fuss and remained quiet. Jiang Baiyu secretly breathed a sigh of relief; he didn’t want to walk around with a dead person’s skull.
After heading downstairs, he checked out with the innkeeper.
He was surprised to find the innkeeper and the staff packing up, as if the inn would be closing for several days.
“Boss, is your inn closing?”
The innkeeper replied, “Just now, two celestial beings said that a disaster is about to befall Fumo Town, and we should leave quickly to seek refuge elsewhere. I thought the strange phenomenon last night was so terrifying that it would be best to hide somewhere else. Better safe than sorry; a few days of halted business is better than losing a life. The staff will all go home after finishing up, and I was just about to have them go upstairs to notify all the guests.”
As the innkeeper spoke, he was calculating on an abacus and urged, “Everyone, move quickly. I’ll settle this month’s rent for you in advance; you’ll need some money on you when seeking refuge elsewhere.”
“Thank you, boss!”
The staff suddenly sped up their actions, working diligently.
As Jiang Baiyu stepped out of the inn, he noticed that many people on the street looked like they were preparing to leave for a long journey.
A crowd had gathered around two young men.
“Daoist, will there really be a disaster in the town? Where should we go to seek refuge? At my age, where can I go?”
“Yeah, my old arms and legs can’t walk far at all.”
“What kind of disaster is it that we must leave the town?”
“Could it be that the man-eating ghost is still alive?”
“Daoist, is that ghost really that terrifying?”
……
The voices mixed together, sounding like a thousand ducks quacking.
“Everyone, this is for your own safety. If anyone doesn’t believe it, you can stay here; the consequences are your own responsibility.”
“The man-eating ghost you speak of has never eaten anyone from this town; it has been wrongfully accused, leading to the exterminators coming after it, which is why Fumo Town is in this situation.”
“We’ve said all we can; whether it’s good or bad, it’s all brought upon yourselves. Others have no obligation to take responsibility for this matter.”
“Those who want to leave can go; those who don’t want to leave can stay. We’ve said what we needed to say; you can choose for yourselves.”
There was a pause, “By the way, your town chief has already run away.”
With that one sentence, the crowd erupted, and everyone stopped surrounding the two men, scattering as they prepared to evacuate Fumo Town.
What could be more convincing than the town chief fleeing without a word?
A disaster was about to befall Fumo Town.
