Chapter 21
Da Bao and Xiao Bao tilted their little heads, sharing their thoughts.
Lu Zhiyao smiled when she heard this, noticing it was getting late, so she took the two children to rest.
Several days passed peacefully. Some neighbors came by to visit, and Lu Zhiyao also arranged to go grocery shopping with Huang Meimei.
After a few relaxing days, Lu Zhiyao began to reflect.
Things couldn’t go on like this forever. She needed to find a job in this area.
The original host had studied some basic medicine under a barefoot doctor in the countryside.
If she could find a job related to that, it wouldn’t raise suspicion.
If someone who never knew how to do something suddenly became skilled, they could easily be seen as an enemy spy.
And once arrested, there would be no way to explain.
One day, the orderly who had delivered her previously came by again. He said that Mu Qingyuan’s salary used to be sent back to his hometown, but now that she was here, it could be given directly to her.
Even though she was now receiving a salary, Lu Zhiyao couldn’t just live off savings.
So she wanted to ask around among the other military wives about job opportunities on the base.
To gather this kind of information, she needed to put in some effort.
Lu Zhiyao figured that unless there was something in it for them, people wouldn’t be eager to talk. During her grocery trips, she noticed that many military wives played with their children in the compound.
She thought she could take that opportunity to join them.
With that in mind, Lu Zhiyao went to the kitchen and, using knowledge from her past life, took ingredients from her spatial storage to make some snacks.
Once the snacks were ready, she stored them away again, and the next afternoon she took the kids out to play.
She brought the snacks along.
As soon as they arrived at the compound, some children shouted for Da Bao and Xiao Bao to come play.
The two children were excited and ran over.
While the children played together, Lu Zhiyao carried the snacks over.
The military wives were chatting while watching the children, and when the kids were done playing, they’d head home.
Most military wives stayed home to raise kids and do housework, but some had jobs on the base, usually lighter tasks.
“Xiao Lu, you should have brought the kids out to play earlier!”
“Exactly, it’s not good for them to be cooped up all day!”
“It’s so nice for them to get out and play.”
…
The women greeted her warmly, one after another. Lu Zhiyao smiled and said, “I wasn’t very familiar with everyone before. Lately, I’ve been thinking I should come say hello, so I brought the kids out.”
The others smiled politely in response.
“Sisters, I wanted to ask if any of you work in the military district?”
As she spoke, Lu Zhiyao took out the snacks. “I’m new here and don’t know much. I’d really appreciate it if you could help me understand more.”
“Even though I’m getting my husband’s salary, I don’t want to live off it forever. I’d like to find something to do.”
“I made some small snacks for you all to try.”
She brought out the snacks, which were bite-sized. There were plenty to go around, enough for the children too.
The women tried them.
“Oh wow, these are delicious! You must have used a lot of sugar—they’re so sweet!”
“Sugar’s still expensive, though—try to save when you can.”
“As for jobs, most of us do have work. It’s the weekend, so the kids aren’t at school. When they’re at school, we’ve got time.”
“I work in the canteen, serving food to the soldiers. She works in logistics.”
“That one works at the base’s kindergarten, caring for the children.”
“There are also jobs like cleaning up around the base.”
“There are lots of positions, and the base provides certain benefits to military wives. The pay is decent, and there’s flexibility.”
“In general, it’s possible to work and take care of your kids at the same time. The base really looks out for us military wives.”
As everyone talked over each other, Lu Zhiyao learned that there were many job options available on base and that military wives received special treatment.
If she just wanted any old job, that wouldn’t be a problem.
But she didn’t want just any job—she hoped for something related to medicine, like becoming a military doctor, similar to Bai Shuishui.
But becoming a military doctor wouldn’t be easy.
Military doctors had to go through vetting, and she wasn’t sure what the process was.
“Xiao Lu, are you thinking about finding a job?” one wife asked, having guessed Lu Zhiyao’s thoughts.
“Yes,” Lu Zhiyao didn’t hide it, “I wanted to ask what kinds of jobs are available.”
Since she had given them snacks, the women were quite friendly.
“Actually, I think you could work in cleaning or child care on the base. You look capable, and you’re good with kids. Plus, it’s an easy job.”
“If you work in the kindergarten, you can bring your children with you.”
“That would make things easier for you.”
They offered their suggestions seriously. But Lu Zhiyao thought for a moment and then asked earnestly, “Do you know what it takes to become a military doctor?”
Everyone fell silent for a moment. They hadn’t expected her to ask that.
“Xiao Lu, you’re not joking with us, right?”
“Becoming a military doctor is really tough, and it’s also dangerous. They have to go with the soldiers on missions and provide support from behind.”
“Yeah, it’s no small thing. You need to have training—this isn’t something just anyone can do.”
Though their words were blunt, Lu Zhiyao knew they were right.
She smiled slightly and explained, “I studied medicine back in the village. I even have a license and often treated villagers. Now that I’m here, I’d like to find a job in that field and continue learning and improving.”
Once they heard this, the women weren’t surprised anymore. If she had studied medicine before, it made sense she wanted to be a military doctor.
“Still, it’s not easy. You’ll need to go on missions, so physical fitness and skills are important.”
“Higher-level military doctors also need to train. They’re responsible for soldiers’ lives, so they must have the strength and capability.”
“Most of the military doctors here graduated from military medical universities. They have strong foundations.”
The women chatted among themselves, sharing what they knew, and Lu Zhiyao pieced the information together.
It was clear that becoming a military doctor in this era wasn’t easy, but she believed she could do it. In her past life, she had become an excellent doctor through hard work.
“How do you get into a military medical university? Through the college entrance exam?”
After learning this, Lu Zhiyao shifted to another question.
She wasn’t worried about physical ability. In her past life, she had learned taekwondo for self-defense and had books and tutorials in her spatial storage.
So the real challenge was how to reasonably enter a military medical university.
“The military medical university is in the capital. You don’t necessarily need to take the entrance exam to get in—some junior-level doctors got in without it.”
“Yes, I’ve heard that too. Some entered through a specialized medical exam.”
“Some are admitted through the college entrance exam, and others take the route we just mentioned.”
“The first method is good for those with lower academic scores but some medical background. The second is better for complete beginners.”
The first method was to pass a specialized medical test to get in.
The second was to get in through the regular college entrance exam.
From the original host’s memory, Bai Shuishui had gotten in through the first method.
She had learned some basic knowledge from a barefoot doctor in her village and studied for a while. Then she passed the medical test and became a junior military doctor.
But after years in the military, she was still a junior doctor—which showed she wasn’t focused on improving herself, probably only interested in scheming.
Lu Zhiyao snorted lightly, a bit disdainful.
“Actually, I think you should give it a try. How are your academic skills?”
Lu Zhiyao nodded, “Not bad.”
