Chapter 14: Don’t Run, I Promise I Won’t Kill You
Hu Zhaodi looked up and coldly smiled, “I don’t even know who my parents are, so where would I get a brother?
If Hu Yaozu wants to eat roasted meat, can’t you just send Hu Dashan to hunt? If he doesn’t want to hunt, he can pay for it—twenty wen per skewer.”
Yang’s eyes widened in disbelief. “What did you say? Twenty wen per skewer? Why don’t you go rob someone? Twenty wen could buy over a pound of domesticated pork!”
Hu Zhaodi shrugged. “Then go buy some! What are you trying to prove by being here? Besides, my roasted meat is marinated and cooked—aren’t the seasonings worth anything? I worked hard to marinate and roast it; don’t I deserve some compensation?”
Yang’s face turned red with anger. “I—I don’t want the marinated or your roasted meat. Just give me a piece, and I’ll roast it myself, okay?”
“Sure! Thirty wen per pound.”
“What? Why don’t you go rob someone? Domesticated pork isn’t that expensive!”
Hu Zhaodi sneered, “Oh really? Then go buy domesticated meat! If you want to buy from me, sorry, but that’s the price.
I just caught that wild boar with great difficulty; we can’t even eat it all ourselves, so why would I sell it cheaply?”
Yang glared at her, “I’ve raised you for eleven years. Is this how you repay me? Asking for a piece of meat is being gracious; don’t be ungrateful!”
Hu Zhaodi was unable to contain her rage at those words.
She stuffed the roasted meat into Aunt Ji’s hands, stood up without another word, and rushed to get a cleaver from under the eaves.
“Eleven years of raising me, and you dare to say that?
Asking for my meat is being gracious?
Great!
After working like a horse for so many years in your Hu family, I’d be doing you a favor by killing you!”
With that, Hu Zhaodi ran at Yang holding the cleaver.
Yang’s face went pale with fear, and she turned to flee.
Hu Zhaodi stopped in her tracks and yelled, “Don’t run! I promise I won’t kill you!”
Watching Yang flee in panic, Hu Zhaodi couldn’t help but smirk and turned back to the fire to continue roasting the meat.
The aroma of roasted meat continued to waft through the air as a large group of people gathered around the fire, laughing and eating.
Not far away, Yang, no longer being chased by Hu Zhaodi, looked longingly at the lively scene in the Ji family’s courtyard, her nostrils filled with the enticing scent of roasted meat, and she couldn’t help but swallow hard.
At the same time, Hu Yaozu, waiting for Yang to bring him back some roasted meat, waddled over to the Ji family’s courtyard, his body jiggling with fat.
Seeing Yang, Hu Yaozu frowned and asked, “Grandma, what are you doing here?”
Yang was startled and quickly covered Hu Yaozu’s mouth. “Little boy, keep your voice down! If that little wretch hears us, she’ll come after us again.”
“Does she dare? Hmph! I’ll go find her.”
After saying this, Hu Yaozu shook off Yang’s hand and walked toward the Ji family’s courtyard.
Yang’s expression changed dramatically. “Yaozu, don’t go!”
Unfortunately, Hu Yaozu was already tempted by the enticing aroma of roasted meat and ignored Yang’s warning, wobbling quickly into the Ji family’s courtyard.
Everyone heard the footsteps and turned to look at Hu Yaozu.
Hu Zhaodi coldly eyed Hu Yaozu and asked, “What do you want?”
Hu Yaozu adopted a bratty attitude. “Hmph! You little ingrate! You caught a wild boar and didn’t even bring it to the Hu family. What good is it that Mom and Dad raised you?”
Hu Zhaodi stood up and slapped Hu Yaozu across the face.
“Little beast, who gave you the guts to come here and shout at me?”
“Calling me a worthless piece of trash, who do you think you are? It’s true what they say: like parents, like child.
With that pig-like figure of yours, even if you brought money, I wouldn’t sell you any roasted meat. Get lost!”
Hu Yaozu burst into tears, throwing himself on the ground and rolling around, looking just like Yang when she threw a tantrum.
“Grandma, the worthless piece of trash hit me! Wuwu… I want to eat roasted meat! I want roasted meat today!”
Yang stood at the doorway, glancing at Hu Zhaodi, wanting to go in but too afraid to, worried that Hu Zhaodi would go mad and chop her up.
Hu Zhaodi shot a cold glance at Yang, making her feel a chill run down her spine.
However, Hu Zhaodi only spared her a glance before her icy gaze returned to Hu Yaozu.
The next second, Hu Zhaodi bent down to pick up the cleaver from the ground.
Yang’s heart nearly stopped from fear, and she dashed into the Ji family’s courtyard, using every ounce of strength to drag Hu Yaozu out.
Hu Yaozu yelled at the top of his lungs, “Let go of me! I’m not leaving! I want to eat roasted meat! Grandma, kill that little wretch and get all the roasted meat for me!”
Hu Zhaodi was furious and charged out, raising the cleaver in her hand.
“You little beast! I’ll make you regret it! Let’s see if I don’t kill you today, you dog’s daughter!”
Hearing Hu Zhaodi’s furious voice, Hu Yaozu opened his eyes, saw the cleaver aimed at him, and immediately scrambled to his feet, running in front of Yang.
“Grandma, block her! That little wretch has gone mad!”
Hu Zhaodi was now truly furious, and as she ran, she scanned her surroundings. Spotting a bamboo stick, she bent down and picked it up.
She quickened her pace and quickly caught up to Hu Yaozu, kicking him to the ground and raising the bamboo stick to hit him hard on the backside.
“Ah!”
Hu Yaozu let out a scream that sounded like a slaughtered pig.
As Hu Zhaodi struck him, she scolded, “You ungrateful little beast! Since your parents and your grandma didn’t teach you properly, today I’ll teach you a lesson on how to be a person and how to speak! Don’t learn from your parents and grandma, who only spew filth!”
The sounds of the bamboo stick hitting Hu Yaozu echoed continuously.
Yang screamed at the top of her lungs, “Stop it, you little wretch! Stop!”
“Smack!” Hu Zhaodi swung the bamboo stick and struck Yang on the leg.
Yang winced in pain, tears brimming in her eyes, but Hu Zhaodi showed no sign of stopping.
The bamboo stick struck both of them repeatedly. “So you’ve gotten used to cursing me, huh? Even after I severed ties with you, you still come to the Ji family to curse at me! I’ll make you regret spewing filth; today, I’ll teach you how to speak and behave!”
Hu Yaozu cried out in anguish, his wails attracting Hu Dashan.
Seeing his wife and son being beaten by Hu Zhaodi, Hu Dashan’s eyes bulged with rage as he grabbed a wooden stick and prepared to swing it at Hu Zhaodi.
Hu Zhaodi dodged swiftly, her movements quick as lightning, and instantly appeared behind Hu Dashan, kicking him in the backside.
The kick caused Hu Dashan to stumble forward, and the bamboo stick hit him squarely on the back.
Yang seized the opportunity to pull Hu Yaozu up and escape, but Hu Zhaodi wouldn’t let her have that chance.
She turned and kicked, sending Yang sprawling to the ground, the bamboo stick mercilessly striking the three of them.
