Chapter 20: The Shameless Hu Family

Seeing her eldest grandson crying, Yang felt a headache coming on. “Alright, stop crying. After all, we’ve raised that ungrateful child for eleven years. I’m going to the Ji family to see if she really bought so many things.

We don’t even have a bit of food left. If she did buy something, I’m going to get everything she bought back for Yaozu to eat.”

With that, Yang angrily headed toward the Ji family.

When she arrived outside the Ji family’s small courtyard, she saw through the fence that the old couple and Hu Zhaodi were moving things into their home.

Yang’s eyes were about to pop out with anger. “Hu Zhaodi, you ungrateful child! The Hu family has raised you for eleven years, and you didn’t even think to send anything back to the Hu family?”

Hu Zhaodi rolled her eyes. “Who do you think you are? Why should I send the things I bought to your house?”

“You little ingrate, I’m your grandmother!”

“Pah!” Aunt Ji spat in disgust. “I’ll ask you, Yang, where do you get the nerve to claim you’re Zhaodi’s grandmother? You two cut ties in front of the whole village and the village head. Now that you see the girl earning money and buying things, you suddenly want her to be your granddaughter again? How shameless can you be?”

Yang’s face turned from green to white as Aunt Ji scolded her, but she stubbornly refused to admit it. “What do you mean cutting ties? When did I agree to that?”

Uncle Ji looked at her with disdain. “Oh! Now you’re not admitting it, are we? Should I call the whole village over? They are all witnesses to when you cut ties!”

Yang was at a loss for words. “Even if we cut ties, so what? We raised her for eleven years; we can’t let it go to waste! The things she bought must be sent to the Hu family to repay our kindness in raising her.”

Aunt Ji laughed. “Well, I really have opened my eyes! Back then, Zhaodi even returned three taels of silver to your family, and for the past few years, it has been her hard work supporting your whole family. Where do you get the face to talk about raising her?”

Yang coldly snorted dismissively. “Hmph! Three taels of silver is enough to raise her for eleven years? Moreover, that three taels was returned to her; I’ve never taken a cent of her money.”

Hu Zhaodi was furious. Grabbing a chopping knife from beside the door, she pointed it at Yang and said, “Old hag, come! If you want something, come and take it yourself. I’ll let you take everything I bought today if you can grab it.”

Yang shrank her neck, fear flashing in her eyes, but greed was still evident.

“Is that what you said? As long as I can take it, it’s all mine?”

“I said so. Come and take it, come on, right now!”

Yang didn’t dare to step forward and turned to leave.

After a cup of tea’s time, Yang returned to the Ji family courtyard with Hu Dashan, Zhang and Hu Yaozu.

“Dashan, that dead girl said that whatever we can take from her today will belong to us. I saw she bought three bags of grain, along with quite a bit of fabric and meat,” Yang whispered.

Hu Dashan’s eyes lit up instantly. Three bags of grain would be enough for their family to eat for a long time.

As for the fabric, they must make two sets of clothes for their son, Hu Yaozu.

He wondered how much fabric there was. Would it be enough for the whole family to make new clothes?

Thinking of the meat made Hu Dashan’s mouth water; he hadn’t eaten meat in a long time.

Ever since Hu Zhaodi left the Hu family, all the dirty and hard work fell on him and his wife. They had to have a big meal of meat; otherwise, they wouldn’t have the strength to work.

Just as Hu Dashan was dreaming about eating meat and wearing new clothes, Hu Zhaodi came out of the Ji family.

She had replaced the chopping knife in her hand with a bamboo stick as thick as a finger, looking coldly at the Hu family.

“Wow! You’re quite fast! You’re here to take things already? Come, come, come! I keep my word—if you can move the things out of the Ji family, everything I bought today will be yours,” Hu Zhaodi said with a cold smile.

Having felt her internal energy last night, Hu Zhaodi was itching for a fight today and wanted to collect some interest for the original owner.

Revenge should be taken slowly; a dull knife cutting flesh hurts more.

Hu Dashan, seeing the bamboo stick in Hu Zhaodi’s hand, felt a sense of glee in his heart.

A single bamboo stick wouldn’t stop their family of four; everything that dead girl bought today had to be moved to the Hu family.

Hu Zhaodi, holding the bamboo stick with a faint smile, stepped forward to the entrance of the courtyard.

“Alright, you can start now. If you want to go in, you’ll have to get past me first.”

Hu Dashan glanced at the bamboo stick in Hu Zhaodi’s hand and instinctively swallowed hard.

He turned around, looking around, and wanted to grab a wooden stick from the Ji family’s fence.

Hu Zhaodi raised the bamboo stick in her hand and swung it down hard on Hu Dashan’s hand.

“This is the Ji family’s fence! How dare you try to take a stick from it!”

Hu Dashan pulled back his hand, glaring at Hu Zhaodi with eyes filled with venom.

If he didn’t try, it was only a few hits with the bamboo stick. For the sake of the grain and fabric inside, he had to go all out!

Gritting his teeth, Hu Dashan used his body to shield Hu Zhaodi, trying to let Zhang Shi and Yang into the house to grab the grain.

But how could Hu Zhaodi let them succeed?

Even without feeling her internal energy, she was confident she wouldn’t let them in, especially now that she had cultivated a bit of internal energy.

With this little internal energy, she could easily take on a dozen average strong men without breaking a sweat.

The bamboo stick in her hand moved like a snake, swaying left and right. Yang, Zhang Shi, and Hu Dashan took several hits and couldn’t get past Hu Zhaodi to enter the Ji family’s courtyard.

“Smack! Smack! Smack…”

The bamboo stick kept landing on the three of them, with only Hu Yaozu staying far away, watching Hu Zhaodi’s impressive display with fear in his eyes.

In the past, this sister had always been submissive in front of him; seeing her like this was truly intimidating, and he felt scared.

Meanwhile, Hu Zhaodi struck harder with each hit, and Hu Dashan and the others were jumping around from the pain, the marks on their bodies likely thicker than a thumb.

Finding it impossible to get into the Ji family, and unable to bear the pain from the strikes anymore, Hu Dashan and the others had to retreat.

Hu Zhaodi didn’t pursue them, just standing at the entrance of the small courtyard, looking at them with disdain.

“Wow! Giving up so quickly? Come on! Don’t you want the grain and fabric in the house anymore?”

Hu Dashan glared at Hu Zhaodi resentfully and turned to whisper to Zhang Shi, “Child’s mother, go find a few sticks. I don’t believe we can’t get in today.”

Zhang Shi nodded and turned to find some sticks.

Hu Zhaodi crossed her arms, coldly watching them, as if looking at a few simpletons, filled with disdain.

Hu Yaozu peeked out from behind Yang, speaking timidly, “Sister, did you buy meat today? I want to eat the grilled meat you make.”

Hu Zhaodi smiled. “Yes, I bought it! But why should I give it to you? And don’t call me sister in the future. I’m not your sister. If you want grilled meat, ask your parents and your grandma to buy it for you, don’t look for me.”

“No, you’re still my sister. You used to care for me the most. Whenever there was something good to eat at home, you always saved it for me. I want to eat the grilled meat you make.”
