Chapter 4: The Space Cannot Store Living Things

Back at the Hu family’s courtyard, Grandma Yang was cursing, “Where has that little wretch gone? It’s already this late, and the food isn’t ready! Is she trying to starve our whole family?”

Hu Zhaodi lifted the corners of her mouth in a smirk. “Grandma, I’ve already cooked the rice! Dad told me to cook food for the pigs, so I took the cooked rice to feed them.”

Yang was furious: “What did you say? You little wretch! You took the cooked rice to feed the pigs? What are we going to eat? Hurry up and cook something else!”

“Grandma, there’s no cornmeal or wild vegetables left, and we’re out of brown rice. We have no food to cook!”

“What? We’re out of food? Did you use up all that cornmeal?”

“Grandma, it was the pigs that ate it, not me! I didn’t eat a bite.”

Yang was seething with rage and reached for a bamboo stick to hit Hu Zhaodi.

Hu Dashan remembered the thirty taels of silver and quickly stopped his mother: “Mother, don’t hit her! What’s standing in front of you right now is worth thirty taels of silver.”

Yang shot a glance at Hu Zhaodi and immediately calmed down.

The Hu family was already poor, and their leftover food was limited. Although there was still a bit of corn left, it was getting dark, and it was too late to grind more.

Yang and Zhang gritted their teeth in anger but, thinking of the thirty taels of silver, could only go back inside to drink some water to fill their stomachs.

After drinking a belly full of water and anger, they still felt hungry.

The Hu family’s baby, Hu Yaozu, was crying loudly from hunger.

Meanwhile, Hu Zhaodi returned to the thatched room where the original owner used to live.

Upon entering, she couldn’t help but feel her eyelids twitch.

Is this really a place for a person to live?

There was a “bed” made of several wooden planks laid on the ground, topped with a layer of straw. On the straw were several tattered cotton jackets, with the cotton stuffing exposed and turning black.

The numerous patches couldn’t hide the blackened cotton.

Hu Zhaodi rolled up her sleeves and bundled up the straw and old cotton jackets to throw them in the corner.

These rags couldn’t be discarded just yet; she couldn’t let the Hu family suspect anything.

After sweeping the room and clearing a small space, Hu Zhaodi turned to wash up.

After washing, she returned to the thatched room, took out a folding bed from her space, and then fetched bed linens and a quilt from the space supermarket to spread on the folding bed.

After closing the door tightly to ensure no one could come in, she sat cross-legged on the bed and began practicing her family’s martial arts.

In her previous life, her martial arts were quite good.

Although she had lost her skills after transmigrating, she had the martial arts manuals memorized, so starting from scratch shouldn’t be too difficult.

A night passed, but Hu Zhaodi didn’t cultivate a trace of inner strength.

However, she was not discouraged; in her previous life, she had trained for a whole year before she could cultivate inner strength.

Getting up to wash up again, Hu Zhaodi found that the other members of the Hu family were still fast asleep.

After washing, she stored the folding bed back in her space, grabbed a machete, and slung it over her shoulder, heading into the mountains.

First, she took a look at her family’s fields. Seeing that the crops weren’t growing well, she frowned and shook her head.

The soil in this field wasn’t fertile at all; the seedlings hadn’t even grown as tall as the weeds. It was a miracle if there was anything to eat.

The Hu family members were lazier than the pigs in the pigpen, relying entirely on her for the farm work.

With crops that looked nearly like weeds, Hu Zhaodi didn’t want to waste her time and energy, so she simply carried her hoe and walked deeper into the mountains.

After all, she was a descendant of an ancient martial arts and medicine family in her previous life, and there must be plenty of treasures in the mountains that resembled a primitive forest.

Rather than wasting time tending to crops that wouldn’t grow and wouldn’t yield much, it was better to go into the mountains and try her luck, gathering some treasures to sell in town for silver.

For Hu Zhaodi, making money in this ancient world was as easy as pie.

Not to mention her remarkable medical skills, even taking out a few items from her space supermarket could earn her some money.

However, the original owner’s body was too weak. Going into the mountains would not only help her build strength but also train her body’s reaction speed and agility, all while allowing her to make some small profits—truly a win-win situation.

Once she entered the deep mountains, Hu Zhaodi leisurely carried her machete and wandered around.

The deeper she went, the more dangerous it became. To her surprise, the first thing she encountered was a wild boar.

The wild boar wasn’t very large, weighing only about one hundred and fifty to one hundred sixty pounds.

Although Hu Zhaodi felt nervous, she wasn’t afraid enough to run away.

In terms of strength, she naturally couldn’t compete with the boar, but dealing with a wild boar wasn’t just about brute force.

Given her current physique, if she didn’t think of a way, she really couldn’t handle this wild boar.

She stepped back a little and took out some soft tendon powder she had concocted in her previous life, slowly approaching the boar.

She sprinkled a bit of the soft tendon powder, not wanting to use too much; she wanted the boar to help her practice for a while.

Hu Zhaodi fought with the wild boar for quite some time, and soon her forehead was covered in beads of sweat.

Damn it! Without martial arts or inner strength, even a wild boar affected by the soft tendon powder was so difficult to deal with.

Although she no longer had inner strength, she had the martial arts moves memorized, and while it was tough, she could still manage against a boar that had been affected by some of the powder.

With the machete in her hand swinging through the air, her nimble body dodged the boar’s attacks left and right.

The boar was covered in wounds, blood pouring out, yet it still wouldn’t go down.

The original owner’s weak body was struggling to keep up.

However, the boar was also heavily injured. Even if it dragged on, it would bleed out and die.

If it weren’t for the sake of training, she could easily take the boar down with a bit of knockout powder.

Due to exhaustion, Hu Zhaodi considered putting the boar into her space so it could bleed out there.

If she left the boar here, the smell of blood might attract even fiercer beasts.

She concentrated her thoughts, but the wild boar didn’t get pulled into her space.

After several attempts, the boar continued to bounce around her.

No matter how much Hu Zhaodi wracked her brain, she couldn’t understand what was going on. Could it be that the boar was too big to fit inside?

If that were the case, it would be troublesome. A wild boar this large, if she managed to kill it, would be hard to take back unless she dismembered it.

But how could she dismember it before skinning it? It wouldn’t sell for a good price.

With no other option, and the boar still alive, she had to keep circling around it, bearing with it.

After a while, she finally wore the boar down.

Not daring to delay, fearing that the smell of blood might attract predators, she planned to take a cart from her space to transport the boar.

In her mind, she couldn’t help but think how nice it would be if she could just get the boar into her space without so much hassle.

In the next moment, the wild boar was pulled into her space.

Hu Zhaodi’s eyes widened in shock.

In her heart, she vaguely understood that the space couldn’t store living things.

However, she was already very satisfied to have a magical ability like this and didn’t dare to wish for an all-powerful space.

Hearing some commotion not far away, Hu Zhaodi quickly turned and ran, unwilling to put herself in danger.

She ran all the way to the creek before stopping to catch her breath.

Finding some dry wood, she took out the rabbit that Hu Dashan had processed from her space, washed it, and then took out some seasonings to marinate it for a while before lighting a fire, leisurely roasting the rabbit.
